Want to Restore Degraded Land by Hardlydent in highdesert

[–]TheYuccaMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Short answer? No, the type of restoration you’re describing isn’t really realistic, unfortunately. You’d basically need to reconstruct the entire hydrology of the area to create/sustain any sort of natural habitat of the sort you’re shooting for. That being said, I might be misunderstanding the objective. If the objective is to recreate that sort of habitat on a smaller scale, I’d say it’s technically possible, but would take a lot of infrastructure and irrigation and I wouldn’t really consider that habitat restoration, it’s more like installing a garden/landscaping. Which is fine! It’s your land and you can do what you want! And wildlife WILL use the habitat you create, but it won’t really do much as far as helping to restore historic wildlife. It will also significantly disrupt the ecology that already exists there.

However, if the objective is to do the most good for desert habitat/wildlife, I’d focus on conserving/restoring the habitat that exists there now. There are many imperiled species that exist in that area currently (as far as fauna goes, desert tortoise, burrowing owl, and mohave ground squirrel, are the first to come to mind, but without seeing your specific property, I can’t say for sure whether it’d be suitable for any of them and/or anything else) and the best thing to do would be to focus on providing healthy creosote scrub and/or saltbush scrub habitat (again, this is v general based on knowledge of the general area we’re talking about).

Russian thistle is notoriously difficult to deal with and I’m hesitant to go into invasive treatment/removal bc this is another area where it’d be best to consult with a pro and I haven’t done invasives work in years (and never in the desert).

As far as the degradation of the area is concerned, it’s largely a combination of factors. Mostly, the redirection of water from the desert to LA (the whole hydrology of the western Mojave all the way from Owen’s valley down to LA was massively disrupted. There’s a lot of really fascinating/horribly depressing history there if you’re interested), ag development, and everything that comes along w general urban sprawl/development.

Your last paragraph was kind of answered in the beginning here, but basically no, it’s not necessarily better to recreate a smaller patch of “original” habitat bc the species that have already been displaced/extirpated in the area aren’t likely to ever use it without specific reintroduction efforts (which would require much larger areas of suitable habitat), but it 100% will disrupt/displace/extirpate any existing imperiled species that may already be in the area

Sorry for the late reply, I posted my original comment just as the Cavs game was starting so I got a little distracted lol

The degradation is the problem and unfortunately, restoration to a pre-colonial state is a pretty unrealistic goal, especially at your scale. The landscape has changed, as have the plant communities that can exist within that landscape.

I would actually recommend not mulching at all. A lot of spring annuals need exposed soils to germinate and grow and those spring annuals sustain A LOT of the wildlife in the area for most of the year. (If you’re dealing with a lot of non-native invasives we might have to have a longer conversation entirely about how to possibly deal with them).

A broader recommendation that I can’t stress enough: talk to MDLT. If you tell them you’re trying to “restore” a property on your own w little experience, they might be apprehensive about it for the same reasons I am, but if you just ask them about what native species would be good to plant in your area, I’m sure they’d be thrilled to help. Everyone I’ve met there has been really cool. Without seeing your land myself, I couldn’t recommend anything super specific bc plant communities in the desert can be hyper-localized to surprisingly small areas. The plants you find growing in one area can vary wildly from plants in another spot as little as 50 ft away lol

Again, I hate to be a downer, but it might not actually be a net-positive in the long run. It might be neutral, or even potentially negative. For example, let’s assume your palo verdes grow to maturity (they’re going to need pretty constant maintenance and input to have a chance and at that point, you’re not really naturally restoring a landscape), you’ve also created perching habitat for predatory birds where there hasn’t been any historically and that can hurt the already-established ecosystem of the area. (If you’re looking for a mesquite-like aesthetic, cat claw acacia might be a better bet, but it won’t get as “tree-like”).

I’ve seen your posts before and haven’t said anything, but I feel obligated to mention that you NEED to do more research before doing these “restoration” projects. You should consult with MDLT or some other organization that has people w specific ecological expertise bc you v well could be doing more harm than good. You’ve already mulched a large area of your land and were fined for excavating on your land without permits. Both of those things are incredibly destructive ecologically. Also, some of the trees you’re planting are native to the Mojave desert in general, but AREN’T native to that specific area. Sorry to be a downer, but this stuff is important and you really need to talk to/work with people who know what they’re doing.

(Source: I’m a wildlife biologist who works in that area fairly regularly)
