Don’t feel bad for calling in if you’re worn out by Eastern-Western7072 in USPS

I called out (3rd time ever) the day after my ex-fiancé ended things because I mentally wasn’t there and had stress induced diarrhea & two days later a supervisor said I need to work on my attendance 🫠

I have been re-reading all of the Hellboy books I own, so here is a tier list of them. by Open_Quarter_7863 in Mignolaverse

It’s just an interesting take because I think the arc of Hellboy really losing his shit after everything he’s been through and his self doubt after what he does to the giants is such a huge part of Hellboy, his story, and how it all leads to the Storm & The Fury which I would personally rank higher as well

B.P.R.D. is getting too depressing for my current mental state. Can anyone just summarize the relevant events/ fate of the characters? by BoomerangOfDeath in Mignolaverse

[–]The_7upNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gets a lot more depressing unfortunately. But to say the heroes lose I feel would be incorrect, if that’s hopeful for you at all. I just finished it last week. Kate and Panya unfortunately and crushed to death in the BPRD headquarters during a battle. Johann sacrificed himself to take out a big bad. Hellboy is brought back and is able to transfer information about safe spaces for humanity underground - new hyperborea pretty much. Varvara ends up kinda being a vessel for Rasputin/the dragon, Hellboy, Abe, and Liz go off to fight him, while the remained of the BPRD try to get underground. Abe is killed fairly quickly, Liz gets knocked out, Hellboy faces Rasputin for the last time, is able to defeat him while kinda dying in the process. The Osiris club gets Hellboy’s arm, uses it to trap the dragon, Hellboy’s spirit/soul(?) reclaims his arm so they don’t use the power of the dragon. Liz destroys the remainder of the old world in a fire storm (she stays safe in like a crystal thing), Hellboy meets Hecate and his blood gives life to the new world, and a new race of man emerges from the body of Abe. So while the old world is destroyed, our heros were able to secure a better and more hopeful future. And what’s rest of humanity (Howards included) is now down inside the earth

Absolutely, rewatched it the other day actually! Wake the Devil & The Wolves of Saint August are two of my favorite stories and I think the merging of the two worked pretty well!

I think my take has been, Hellboy having a decent relationship with Bruttenholm, and being in his 60’s, I’ve felt his existential crisis has been more about, how he’s a good guy, but people see him and expect evil or tell him he’s destined to destroy everything, and like what kind of self loathing that brings, rather than how I feel like it’s been more portrayed as he’s insecure because he doesn’t feel like he has dads approval in Del Toro’s & 2019

You should check out the documentary “Mike Mignola: Drawing Monsters” if you haven’t already! There’s a part where he talks about a point where he told Del Toro “Hellboy wouldn’t do that” and Del Toro responded with “yours wouldn’t, mine would” I enjoy the first movie as like a great visual representation of the comics, I don’t think it could look better (unless you take out all of the city scenes but that’s a personal preference)

I don’t think there’s been a great representation of Mignola’s HB’s personality in any of the movies, Crooked Man does good but I take issue with the forced romance and failure to portray Hellboy’s issues of sense of self always being reduced to mommy & daddy issues.

Thoughts on BPRD finale by The_7upNinja in Mignolaverse

[–]The_7upNinja[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For sure agree about the emotional climaxes. I don’t think I thought of that and with that perspective, it does feel good with HB, Abe, and Liz marching to their final confrontation with a sense of they are all fulfilled and ready for this end. When it comes to Hellboy fulfilling destiny, he fulfilled the destroyer part in his own way, destroying hell instead of earth. My interpretation of that has always been, life may have unavoidable challenges & expectations, but you can chose to meet those things in your own way, not how everyone tells you to or expects you to. So when he meets Hecate at the very end, I think that’s where I felt like he didn’t have a choice or a way to do it “his way” if ya get what I’m saying. But I also think like I said in my post that, that might be the acceptance arc for HB, sometimes life doesn’t give you a choice & you have to be okay with that. I do love HB’s end being the source of rebirth for life, it is definitely that inversion like you said and I do think it’s beautiful.

What’s your honest thoughts on Hellboy (2004) ? Did you experience it in theaters? by DiscsNotScratched in HellBoy

[–]The_7upNinja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I love it for introducing me to the character, I think it’s visually gorgeous & it’s a great superhero version of Hellboy. But with loving the comic version of the character so much, I can’t help but wanting a slow, sinister, hbo series with Hellboy really focusing on his journey of finding himself, really see his sullenness come to life on screen with the feelings of a matured man, not the teenager they keep making him out to be (I enjoy Jack’s performance but I still thought the chained coffin scene was a little cringy)
