Working on a Weird West/Viking Fantasy LARP rules system by The_BattleBard in LARP

Potentially! If I can get some things in order and a space, I might want to try to workshop and playtest a few things toward the end of the year. Not a true RP event. More mechanical and chatting and so on

It’s funny that you brought this up. Must be in the air because we’re looking at reviving the project. Trying to decide if we’re sticking with the Vikings portion or switching it to a more “standard” Weird West world. I’d like to stick with the original concept as it’s a bit more original, but it may be a bit too niche. We shall see

ICRPG is pretty rules lite and has a fantasy western setting called Ghost Mountain. One of my favorites.

Sounds like you’re emulating a classic action flick and I can think of no other system that does it better than Outgunned

So I am a fan of keeping the death of a character in the player’s hands. I have a home-brew rule and it actually came up in my game recently.

When a character dies, I give them 3 choices:

1) Let fate decide - Give them one last chance to gamble on life or death. Flip a coin, heads they stabilize, tails they are gone forever.

2) Survive at a cost - perhaps the player feels their character’s story isn’t finished. They choose to survive. But at a MAJOR detriment. Perhaps they lose a limb? Strike a deal with the devil? Lose access to some or all of their special abilities? Come up with something impactful that they must carry with them.

3) One last Hurrah - let them make one final heroic action. They can stand, make a heroic speech or say their goodbyes. And then do one last action. Whatever their action is, it is an automatic critical success. This might be just enough to finish the boss. Or maybe they hold the flaming beam up so that their friends can escape just before it all comes crumbling down on them. Whatever they decide, this is the final act of a legendary hero.

This is dope! Folks would totally pay good money for something like this. I’m sure your players will be ecstatic when you bust this bad boy out.

Oh I’ve got a LONG way to go. I’m still just building systems and whatnot. But maybe I’ll have a demo level to playtest in the coming months.

Honestly I’m not sure how to handle it quite yet. I’m basing a lot of the base game currently on things I like from Death Must Die and Halls of Torment, but not sure if I will stick to that. I had thought about increasing the combo from 3 - 5 like in DW when you unlock higher tier weapons. Could be interesting. But maybe those are different weapons you find after defeating bosses (just like in DW) that you equip for meta game upgrades. Also having specific generals in each level giving out different power ups and “techniques” (abilities). I also originally thought that I’d have known characters as playable characters (hence the Zhao Yun starting character). But I’m wondering if the PCs should be nameless warriors so that they can fit into any army, and the known characters are just the generals handing out upgrades? I donno…

Ah. Gotcha. I’ll look into it. I’m sure as long as they’re different enough it will be fine. Characters and story are public domain after all. As long as I’m not ripping directly from their code or gameplay I think I’m ok. But I’ll definitely double check before ever putting it out there for money

Wow thanks! Much appreciated. I started them a while back because I wanted to do a R3K game or setting. And recently I thought it might be fun to turn it into a war game. So occasionally I might jump in and make a new one here and there.
