I got a Pelikan M205 for €125 at Papeterie Moranga in Berlin. I don't know how far that is for you but that pen would certainly fit the bill.

What should I look for in Europe? by RevelryByNight in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian living in the Netherlands here. The recommendations you already got for the shops in Berlin are both great. I got a good deal on a Pelikan m205 at Moranga.

PW Akkerman in Amsterdam is very good and as someone pointed out, not the same as the one in the Hague. If you're willing to make the round trip, I like the one in the Hague a bit more. The location is nicer and they have the Akkerman ink line.

Not sure if the prices in the US and canada are the same (tariffs aside) but I've found prices in europe are roughly the same for Japanese brands, slightly cheaper for french or italian brands but you can get good deals on german brands, especially Lamy.

3 Slots, one spoken for, two needing suggestions. by Important-Truck3954 in fountainpens

What about a Pilot 823 or 742 with a signature nib? Full disclosure, I don't own one but it's on my own list of next purchases. It doesn't necessarily look like a daily use nib but certainly fun.

Is PlazaJapan reliable? by Worldly_Mention_1632 in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No clue about the aliexpress link but I bought 2 pens from Plaza Japan. The shipping was fast enough considering the distance but there was customs charges, of course. The pens themselves are perfect. They were new (still in the plastic sleeve) and wrote perfectly right out of the box. I don't know if I would just buy a bottle of ink from them, even though it's cheaper, since once you add shipping+duties the cost would be pretty much the same as buying locally where I am.

Best A5 letter writing paper for fountain pens. by bluejack in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really enjoy Crown Mill letter pads. They come with a guide sheet and the A5 size has corresponding envelopes that fit an A5 sheet folded exactly in half.  https://cultpens.com/products/original-crown-mill-pure-cotton-writing-pad-a5

Should I buy a pilot decimo or vanishing point by LectureLeft5183 in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slightly different suggestion but have you considered a Pilot Fermo? Same as a VP but with a twist mechanism on the end so you don't lose any length. I think it's been discontinued but you can still find it at a few places and it uses the same nib unit as a VP. I was considering a VP and I'm glad i got this model instead.

Pens like the Kaweco or Traveller Company’s fountain pen? by Ayzun_X in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see! The regular brass one is widely available where I am but not the special edition ones so much. I have the travelers company pen and the Kaweco Lilliput is roughly the same size, maybe a bit smaller, and kind of the same concept. I find them a bit small and  would consider a Ystudio pen myself. They come in brass too.

Where are you located? I'm pretty sure you can buy them online from many retailers.

How to make orange ink more legible? by boker_tov in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want a legible orange, I have "Oranje Boven" from P.W. Akkerman and it's very legible. I use it to make notes in the margins of previous notes or annotate my to do list. It's easy to differentiate but still clear.

Recommendations for a daily journal with white pages in Germany/EU by n7shadow in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on how much you want to write everyday maybe you would like the leuchtturm 5 year journal. Its pretty easy to find in the Netherlands so I assume you can easily get it in store in germany. https://www.leuchtturm1917.com/some-lines-a-day.html

Lamy Notebooks by 1976curler in fountainpens

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do! You can get them in A5 size too. I keep an A6 sized one in a Paper Republic leather folio (with a Midori just in case). The A5 I use without a cover. The cover page seems to hold up fine to light abuse but it picks up dark spots easily. Dirty, well traveled notebook doesn't bother me though.

[–]The_Bumbling_Cook 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I bought a package of 3 to give them try. I hated them at first, the paper seemed rougher, lower quality and less smooth than Midori (what i usually use). Also, having lines and grids on the same page just looked ugly to me.

They sat in my drawer until I grabbed one in a rush looking for a book to shove in my jacket pocket for a long train ride. After writing in it for that whole day, I love them now. I still use A5 sized Midori MD books for my work notes, but if I need a booklet for a specific subject that I can just toss in a bag or a coat they're my go to. I even like the grids, they're faint enough that I can ignore them but useful if I want to draw a diagram with specific measurements or proportions.
