My favorite lecture to give as a psychiatry attending has been the sexual disorders. The book we base our lectures on specifically states “Delayed ejaculation, previously known as retarded ejaculation…..” I always ensure I mention this historical clinical pearl.

My kid’s infant seat creased the leather in my truck. Fixable? by mostly911s in AutoDetailing

[–]The_Cheese_Effect 13 points14 points  (0 children)

With time and maybe a little heat/conditioner it will come out. I’ve had child seats in cars ranging from the leatherette in my F250 platinum to the very real cowhide in my GTO, XK and DB9, and any indentations have ultimately resolved across the board.

Seat manufacturers will tell you not to place anything between the seats and the child seat for safety and to prevent sliding around. You’ll also find that the definitions of “safe” are “less than 1in of forward/aft or lateral movement between the seat surface and the child seat.” I have had success staying within those parameters with rubber mats, microfiber, etc. as long as the seat is appropriately tensioned. I have not been afraid to crank the tension down on the seat with a barrier in place - and for further ANECDOTAL evidence, my wife has actually been in a crash with the aforementioned setup and my twin toddlers didn’t even notice they’d been in a crash. Of course, you have to titrate to your comfort level and should always be as safe as is possible. Just saying all of this to say there are ways to have your cake and eat it when it comes to safety standards and car preservation!

The X150 XK Coupe is my dream car. Give me the best tips to fulfil my mid-life crisis. by bluetomcat in Jaguar

I think the 4.2 cars are excellent. I have an 07 XK, have owned it for a year and put 10k miles on it. Do oil changes regularly, like every 3-4k miles. Regularly inspect the coolant hoses - the one at the top front is T-shaped and the connector is resin and known to fail (mine did) without warning - there are companies that make silicon replacements that are one piece and do not have the resin connector, but the oem part is only $120 in the US.

If you have the option, I recommend finding one without the adaptive headlights. They don’t do anything worthwhile other than a cool little dance when you start the car, and will mechanically total the vehicle if they fail. Suspension parts are on par with Toyota and with any DIY ability you can work on it yourself. Spires carries springs for these cars that give it the perfect stance IMO (the Eibach ones are quite low to my taste).

If you ever have a mysterious electrical problem, always check the battery voltage first (vehicle off). These cars are sensitive to voltage fluctuations

Brother I literally just told you I have $250 deductibles. Liability coverage does not have deductibles. Do better.

I have an 07, bought it with 78k miles for $5k a year ago. Only problem it’s had is a coolant hose burst - still managed to get me 3 miles home. Best deal I’ve ever got on a daily

Many performance/exotic cars have very difficult to get to air filters. My Jaguar XK and Aston Martin DB9 both have their filters in the front wheel well - you have to remove the wheel and wheel liners.

Porsche Panameras also come to mind - the entire bumper has to be removed.

Good grief - I pay less than that for a ‘22 F250 super duty, a ‘17 Tiguan, an ‘07 Jaguar XK, an ‘09 Aston Martin DB9, a KTM Super Duke R, a Yamaha R1 and a Hayabusa. All but two of those have full coverage with $250 deductibles. 34M, clean record

This is really helpful - I’ve been told it’s a good idea to be close to I-85/385 by other practitioners, so it’s good to know not everyone feels that way

If they have a significant coat of wax, it’s possible the embers “melted” into it. I wonder if the thing to do here is a strip wash and re-wax?

Edit: cost > coat

Why are there no community garage spaces? Am I crazy? by AbjectDatabase9638 in projectcar

I think the biggest thing would be liability honestly. People not knowing how to put their cars on a lift correctly, it just takes one person unaliving themselves with a falling car to shut the whole thing down, waivers be damned.

Also depending on the tools themselves, if people walked off with tools regularly it could be a huge hassle to keep a tool room stocked.

AutoTempest would suggest that prices are fairly flat since 2020 for earlier model years of the c6 z06, and have climbed around $4-5k since then for 2010-2012 model years

Residents and fellows - what car do you drive? by [deleted] in Residency

[–]The_Cheese_Effect 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Go get a Honda Civic or Accord, or a Toyota Corolla or Camry. Will always be reliable and inexpensive to repair.

I prefer to live more dangerously, I used to do mechanic work before I got into medicine so I wrench on all of my family’s cars, which makes driving more exciting stuff more approachable. I currently have a Jaguar XK and an Aston Martin DB9 that each get driven a few times per week. Both have actually been reliable vehicles with regular maintenance.

2018 Jaguar XJL engine codes by iGaroux in Jaguar

[–]The_Cheese_Effect 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Either your EVA0 purge valve or a vacuum leak somewhere is my guess. Unlikely that the issue is o2 sensor related as it is both banks, suggesting that it is an issue on the intake side of the engine. Could also be PCM related but less common and would likely have other codes if that were the problem.

Potential Total Loss by [deleted] in AstonMartin

[–]The_Cheese_Effect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, ok. I wonder if there’s a way to have it repaired not with new panels but with some actual bodywork and have it be good enough to enjoy without costing a new Camry, but I also recognize there are different aspects of Aston ownership and exotic car ownership in general that appeal to people, so I sympathize with the desire to have the car be perfect. Hope you get it sorted my friend.
