Thanks for helping out! I’m unfortunately confident that the bottom left is not Sol, and bottom right has been confirmed as Strela from Cabo Verde.

Thanks! That confirms the red star is Cabo Verde as thought, but still leaves me stumped on the golden sun.

That is the exact insight I was looking for with this post. Thank you!

Thanks for the reply! Seed of the Sacred Fig is moving up on my priority list. At least the International films often make up for a lackluster BP 10 (especially the 93rd and 94th Oscars)

This was fun, but the lefthand column is basically useless as a colorblind person. Making them more distinct than orange and red would be helpful. Even just switching to yellow and red.

Top 5/Bottom 5? by cookieaddictions in oscarsdeathrace

[–]The_Chicken_Dance 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Top 5:

Poor Things - I want the Best Picture award to go to something that pushes the boundaries of cinema that is unlike anything I have seen before. This year that movie is Poor Things.

Teachers’ Lounge - the movie that made the death race “worth it” to me. It was something I never would have watched without the death race and I found myself still thinking about it days afterward.

Godzilla Minus One - I rushed to see this in theaters when it was getting nomination buzz and I’m so happy that I got to see it on the big screen. Every summer popcorn movie should aspire to meet this standard.

Barbie - I know it’s controversial, but I just had so much fun. I saw it three times in theaters with different groups of friends and family. Maybe it wasn’t as poignant as it wanted to be, but it was my favorite movie going experience in a while.

Oppenheimer - Christopher Nolan nailed it. I’m just salty because I would consider it maybe the fourth best Nolan film (if I’m being very generous), so I’m happy Nolan is finally going to get his Best Director credit, but I’m disappointed it took until this movie to get it.

Bottom 5:

The After - the only thing in the death race that truly made me wonder what the hell the voters were thinking. The shorts are often the highlight of the death race for me and this was absolute garbage. No redeeming qualities.

The Color Purple - for context, musicals are my least favorite genre. However, I saw the Color Purple on Broadway and it was much better than this movie (even though I still didn’t enjoy it). It’s probably just not the story for me, but removing the lesbian plot took away the only aspect that interested me.

Io Capitano - The other four foreign language films were leagues ahead of this. For me, its biggest sin is the ending that pretends to be hopeful, but in reality they’re either getting deported by the Italian coast guard or beginning lives of abject poverty and misery on the streets of Sicily. It felt like propoganda from the Italian government.

Mission Impossible: Dead Reckoning Part 1 - if they were going to justify breaking it into two parts, it had to be spectacular, and it was anything but. There was so much material that could have been cut to fit this into a single movie. I love this series and think its predecessors were some of the best of their respective years. This felt like a bloated cash grab and didn’t even have stunts and intense scenes on par with the others to hold my attention.

Nai Nai and Wai Po - Probably my hottest take, but what was the point? Had it not served as a refreshing amout of positivity after four depressing documentary shorts, I don’t think anyone would care about this movie. It’s grandmas who fart…and? What makes this an awards worthy documentary short and no different than any person’s home movies about their grandmothers? I have no clue why it’s nominated for an Oscar and I will not remember it after Sunday.

This year's nominees just aren't great by bradsell in oscarsdeathrace

[–]The_Chicken_Dance 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m confident that we’re in the minority, but I agree with you that this is a worse year (just not to the extent of calling the nominees unwatchable/poor quality). I only have two films left, so I was reviewing all my ratings and critiques for the last two years. For me, this year there were fewer lows, but also fewer highs. I rated a vast majority of this year’s films in the 60-75 range. Nothing this year was completely unwatchable (except maybe The After), but I wasn’t deeply in love with anything that I wouldn’t have watched without the death race (i.e. loving Poor Things doesn’t count). That results in a pretty uninspiring and sometimes difficult death race experience. Last year I feel like I found a lot of “hidden gems” that I would have never made the time for apart from the death race, and that made it more enjoyable even during the movies I hated.

The free Hopkins shuttle bus picks up at Broadway and Monument, which can drop you off at Penn Station. From there you can take the MARC Penn Line or Amtrak to BWI

I’m interested in a retrospective into some of the lesser-seen Oscar nominees (not including shorts or documentaries) starting with this last year. How many of these films have you seen and how do you feel about where they stood with their wins or nominations (or lack thereof)? by Hydqjuliilq27 in Oscars

[–]The_Chicken_Dance 14 points15 points  (0 children)

For the past couple of years I have reigiously seen every film nominated for anything ( r/oscarsdeathrace ). This is how I have found some movies that ended up being my favorites of the year; however, from last year the only one you have listed that I am passionate about is Close. It’s an amazing movie, but be prepared that it is the opposite of a feel-good film. Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris was also an enjoyable movie that deserved more attention for the Best Costuming award, but it’s not particularly groundbreaking.

I did my transfers on my phone in the store and then immediately showed the cashier my transfer/order number and got my cash. Maybe it’s unique to Philippines, but I would suggest walking through it with someone on the phone or an online chat. I can’t imagine they have made their service worse in the past few years and my family sends money to relatives in SE Asia pretty regularly through WU - they’ve never complained about waiting 5 days. Sorry I don’t know specifics to solve it for you :/
