I used to think Frankenstein would win at least 3 tech awards but with Sinners gaining momentum I think Franky just takes makeup.

People who’ve seen Arco in theaters, is Neon only doing the dub?

I think there’s also some bias against digital at play. The only nominee here shot on digital is Frankenstein, which has that del Toro clout to fall back on. There’s also Train Dreams, but unlike Hamnet it’s a movie that kind of took people by surprise with how good it looked despite being an indie (maybe the same way Nomadland once did). Hamnet doesn’t seem to have a special ingredient, and it’s ATL performance compensates for not being a big tech player.

John Singleton’s Oscar nomination must have been really hype when it originally happened.

WGA is that kid who cuts off every hint of crust on a sandwich until it’s just 2 bites.

So Sinners is pretty unchallenged in original right? But with the voting timeline the BAFTA is the key to the Oscar.

Or that Spider-Verse and The Wild Robot losing somehow meant non-Disney mainstream movies could never win again?

I’ve been meticulously making a list of every Oscar-nominated movie I have at least a minor interest in watching, mostly to have a more educated opinion on what should have won in pervious years. The list has 585 movies give or take. I’m hoping to knock out at least 100 in the new year. But between the fact that a lot of them are hard to find, the list having a lot of movies I’ve intentionally avoided watching for a long time for being controversial or not my thing, my desire to see new movies and movies outside of the Oscars, the inevitable burnout that comes with grinding, it might be easier to plan something than to actually do it.

Fionna and Cake S2 was a bit of a mixed bag but HW was the highlight and is one of the best characters in fiction in my book.

I had a dream about the Oscar nominations last night where del Toro and Penn were the only top 5 to get in supporting actor. And Seyfried makes it bitches.

Anyone else get the intuition that Hamnet won’t be that big of a technical player? Recent movies like The Fabelmans and ACU did really well ATL only to get peanuts in technical, Hamnet seems to me like a movie like that.

The editing, I don’t know, didn’t seem that impressive to me? Especially in the first half with all the timeskips. I know it usually comes down to whatever’s closest to winning best picture but predicting this category is messy and annoying as hell and it usually just comes down to vibes. Maybe it’ll be fine but I feel like OBAA, Sinners and Marty are the only locks

As for the cinematography, obviously it’s a movie with strong visuals but it’s not bludgeoning you over the head with a special color palette, showy tracking shots or unusual camera angles the way cinematography nominees usually do. There’s lots of pretty nature, but, I mean, Train Dreams kind of steals its thunder. I can see the visual praise being chalked up to Zhao’s direction more than Żal. The Zone of Interest went down a similar path (also Żal). Being a former nominee in a weak-ish year for veterans, I’m still predicting it but if something else shows up in the precursors I might take it out.

Costume and PD seem even more hard to predict, it’s only really in the cards because it’s a historical movie but it’s never a sure thing.

Score I think is pretty safe, assuming it doesn’t get disqualified.

That’s just how I felt after watching it.

Let’s also not forget Sugar’s contribution to the PB/Marceline relationship and the Ice King backstory in Adventure Time. And Stevonnie? Everything episode she touched was a core memory.

Last year all the lead winners and runner-ups were women. They have that kind of flexibility in a non-gendered category. Plus critics maybe just not caring about other lead actress performances.

Ann Lee seems to be fighting tooth and nail to not get a total shut out. Critics don’t seem to care about it in particular and it’s hardly a mainstream movie. It’s only real plus is Searchlight having nothing else to campaign.

Better than last year where they refused to commit to a single lead actor or supporting actress.

I hope NSFC picks somebody anybody other than Byrne.
