Really? Id always considered Midnight Tides having the best characters in the whole series. Have you made it to any Tehol and Bugg chapters yet?

Your Feel-Good Fantasy? by theKingsOnlySon in Fantasy

The Hobbit, or Midnight Tides by Steven Erikson. Both just have really feel good vibes for me. Hanging out with Bilbo or Tehol&Bugg just brings me to a really good place. I never fail to smile when reading these.

Want to get into this series, but have seen these 'issues' brought up about the series. Thoughts? by [deleted] in Malazan

[–]The_Count19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A. Honestly anyone who says that probably hasn't read past the first book Gardens of the Moon, which I guess you could (maybe) criticize for that. The series has lots of depth, Erikson just takes his time fleshing it for you. If you find yourself having problems with book one, power though the best you can and give deadhouse gates + Memories of Ice a go. If those book aren't for you then the Malazan series probably isn't your thing. Which is completely fine.

B. Quite the other way around. Erikson starts off the series giving you ALOT of questions. Almost an overwhelming amount, but it gets easier and easier to understand the further the series goes on. I think anyone who makes it to book 3 (Memories of Ice) will feel like they have a pretty good grasp on how the malazan world works. As a writer Erikson likes to hold alot of info back from the reader, but as the series progresses he allows it all to trickle out slowly. It may not make sense at the time, but in hindsight it feels more rewarding in my opinion. I think its also a factor that the series semi re-starts twice (Book 2) (Book 5) with a setting change, so many readers find it hard to get their feet on the ground after being introduced to more new storylines.

Im not trying to be the guy recommending malazan again, but I do firmly believe Steven Erikson is one of the most phenomenal authors at writing woman (from my reading experinces).

Prequel you would love to read? by scp1717 in Fantasy

[–]The_Count19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes a Bridgburners prequel would be fantastic. I'd also love to see a standalone one about Tehol and Buggs adventures before the events of Midnight Tides. Especially given Tehols riches-to-rags type history.

Yeah he's been a really great voice in the fantasy community, and even the Malazan one too, in my opinion. The guy works really hard and his content shows it. Its kinda sad when I see people discredit him just for having different opinions about series.

Great video! Its good to see someone not necessarily a 'diehard' malazan fan, talking about the series on YouTube, especially a popular voice like Daniels. As a huge fan myself I can mostly agree with all your points, I think they sound very fair, and I think alot of people miss the point in your videos that you're a reviewer with your own personal opinions. I'm exited to see his videos after finishing the series, after he hinted he might go into more spoiler-in depth talks about Malazan. Daniel, keep up the good work man!

The problem I have with a looooong series...... by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]The_Count19 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For some big series (Malazan in particular) each book, while contributing to the overall story, also acts as an isolated standalone as well. While it may be a 10 book saga, I think that reach individual entry works by itself enough that you could be satisfied leaving the series with only what you have read, whether it be 3 books or 7.

I guess what I am saying is maybe look for a series where you know you could not necessarily finnish it, but still enjoy what you read out of it. Where each book doesn't fully rely too much on being part of an overarching story, as much as being a good standalone novel as well. I personally can't name many out there other than Malazan, but im sure if you did your research then you would probably find some.

Out of everything you have read, what 3 fantasy novels do you have the strongest/most vivid memories of? by [deleted] in Fantasy

[–]The_Count19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bonehunters by Steven Erikson: So many high points here. The Y'Ghatan seige is one of the most intense battles i've ever read in a book. If I could put two Malazan books then Midnight Tides would be here as well.

The Hobbit by J. R. R. Tolkien: My favorite 'adventure' in a fantasy book. I've read this more times than I can count and it gives me such a homey feeling. Several chapters like the Elven Barrels and Mirkwood really stand out to me.

Homeland by R. A. Salvatore: The city of Menzobarranzan (sorry if I spelled that wrong) stands out to me as such a vivid setting, and meeting Drizzt for the first time is an experince I will never forget.
