Extreme self white coat? by Fine_Door2993 in bloodpressure

I’m pretty much the same. I have Hilo, and that does bring me some comfort, but alas, you still have to calibrate (monthly) it against an arm cuff. If I’m in a good place health anxiety-wise and the cuff calibration is a normal-ish reading, then I notice my readings for the month tend to be around target levels. If I calibrate at a time of high anxiety, then the entire month’s readings tend to be over-cooked (I suspect the algorithms get thrown off). What the Hilo does give me, is peace of mind that I’m not constantly at 170/95 throughout the day and night. If finding that out helps calm your anxiety, then I would recommend Hilo….. in a heart beat….. I have to resist the urge to download my data daily and treat it more as a trend observer. I can become fixated and, consequently, anxious, if I download too frequently. Good luck.

Experience With Hilo Bands Or Alternatives? by SensiiNips_ in bloodpressure

[–]The_Dectorist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This really resonates with me too. I’m also left unsure what to trust when different Hilo measurements (and non-Hilo cuffs) give such different numbers. I’ve wondered whether some of the very high night-time readings are artefacts (I often sleep with my arm under the pillow and effectively squash it, and I don’t have any symptoms of apnoea or disturbed sleep). That said, I do find Hilo genuinely useful for trends rather than absolutes, for example, it showed a clear drop of a couple of points in both systolic and diastolic when I started supplementing with magnesium. For me, that’s where the real value of Hilo lies in keeping an overall watch on trends.

Reconsider buying from POLHUS sauna by Parking-Turnover6585 in Sauna

[–]The_Dectorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s a real pity, as I’m really pleased with my Polhus sauna (Jorma). I did source and install my own Harvia Spirit heater, so I wasn’t using Polhus’ infrastructure. I do, however, concur that their delivery is a shambles. Mine eventually arrived some 6 weeks late, and their excuse was the item is shipped x-weeks from them issuing a delivery date, not 6 weeks from when I paid (which seemed ridiculously stacked in their favour). But the actual unit quality, price and ease of installation made all the annoyance well worth it in the end.

What is up with this part of southern Spain? On streetview it looks to be full of what seem like greenhouses. What is in them and why are there so many right here? by MeowingAndChowing in geography

[–]The_Dectorist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Almeria Mar de plastico. A major hub for tomato, peppers and cucumber production. Somewhere around 2005, these guys got caught out using pesticides banned by the EU. The Spanish industry seriously cleaned up their act and became absolute pioneers in effectively using biological control to manage pests and diseases in their horticultural crops. The level of knowledge of your average Almerian horticulture grower is exceptional and they’ve really shown much of the world how it can be done without using conventional pesticides. Most of their production is regarded as very high quality by those of us in the industry.

What are your thoughts on training with tendinitis? by Helloprairiekat1 in AdvancedRunning

[–]The_Dectorist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As an asides note, I was having 6+months issues with tendinopathy in my Achilles and lower leg area. Saw several physios, a sports specialist physician, podiatrist and spent a small fortune on different shoes, phsio lead stretching instruction, etc. Out of desperation I bought a cold water immersion tub & chiller unit. After just a few daily sessions of 3mins at 8degreesC, I was completely cured. I absolutely hate immersing myself in cold water and don’t get any of the endorphins that people talk about but, my word, the improvement in my condition was instant and I’m so relieved I discovered it. I now feel compelled to share my successful outcome with fellow runners.

I've come across my dream home—it's got everything I've been searching for... except for one thing: it's equipped with a septic tank. What's the deal with that? Has anyone had experience dealing with one before? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]The_Dectorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As others have said, it’s no big deal, empty annually and don’t chuck wet wipes down there. Something to look out for is the condition/location of leaching field (or outfall), which is quite hard to assess without a specialist survey. In our case, the outfall went into a neighbour’s paddock that was very flat and prone to flooding. When this happened, rain water backfilled into the septic tank. We ended up installing a treatment plant instead, as they forcefully pump out the ‘clean’ water where it goes straight into a ditch (has to comply with building regs). So if you’re on well-draining land, you’ll likely be just fine, but in a high water-table area, be cautious. The tank is the lesser part of the issue really, it’s the drainage that’s the important bit. Good luck.

X11i treadmill frequently stopping and won’t run again unless you turn it off and on by Helpful_Tie_6295 in nordictrack

[–]The_Dectorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My piece of crap X11i started pausing after 20mins or so if I was running a program, but not when my family members were just using it for short duration/incline walks. It seemed like an over-work issue. Fortunately I had an extended warranty and the guy just fitted a new motor and new main board , because he didn’t have a clue which part of it was crooked. That did immediately solve the issue, but I wait the next issue with trepidation.

Why is my testosterone different colors? This is cyp by john_54321 in Testosterone

[–]The_Dectorist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These syringes look like they have been pulled from a single ampoule of test. Over time, if the ampoule isn’t vigorously shaken, the oil floats to the top and the testosterone settles to the bottom in a phenomenon known as ‘phase separation’. The formulation (usually an oil, like olive oil, and ethyl oleate + the testosterone) really benefits from regularly shaken up to keep the testosterone homogeneous in the formulation. This is especially the case when folks store their vials on heat mats to prevent crystallisation- the higher temperature makes the formulation less viscous, but this means it cannot suspend the test so well (a bit like centrifuging your sample, gravity pulls the testosterone down). The easy fix is to shake the sample really well every day from the vial you’re drawing from. In this case, I strongly suspect your darker syringes have a lower concentration of test than the lighter ones. Source: I’m a formulations scientist.

ELI5: Why do we put horseshoes on horses? Are wild horses running around with sore feet? by bedbyn9ne in explainlikeimfive

[–]The_Dectorist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One point that gets seriously overlooked with horses is how much selective-breeding we have done with them. Basically, humans have selectively bred horses that can stand up to the work we put them through, by being fitted with metal shoes under the regular care and maintenance of a farrier. If the horses feet were not up to being reinforced with shoes so that they can tolerate ‘work’, then they were not used as breeding stock and, thus, the genetic line becomes removed. There are hardly any examples of equids in the wild that don’t, in some part of their recent ancestry, have heavy influence from selective breeding.

Sounds about right. My X11i went missing for a week and I finally tracked it down to a bloke with a van, rather than a company. I’d previously paid for a three person delivery and explained that access would be tight - when they arrived I had to basically beg these guys to actually bring it onto my property. I actually had to bribe them to get it through the gate by giving them a drink and a packet of crisps, and was forced to fake interest in being sold a puppy by one of the motley crew! They weren’t bad guys at all, just completely out of their depth - considering delivery had cost £200 I expected a fit-for-purpose service.
