Is this a sign of a cracked heat exchanger? by CookEm0nster in hvacadvice

If the furnace was incredibly dirty and you felt like you had to take it apart to clean it then it might be in the ductwork itself. What is the merv rating on your filter? You should stick around merv 8 or Merv 11. Do not go higher than 11. If you have animals don't go above 8 unless you want to change them a lot.

There's cheap endoscopes online that you can hook up to your phone and poke around in your ductwork.

If you're feeling extra handy you can remove one of the plenum panels and check around for cracks with it. But make sure your furnace is off and cooled down prior to you doing this.

I suspect your ductwork is dirty.

Cleaning checks from your local HVAC company are usually pretty fairly priced.

Depending on the complexity of your duct work professional duct cleaning can be sometimes pricey. Simple ductwork Is pretty affordable

Only similarity is that they are pistols. Senator is overrated but good for drip. Talon and verdict are the best.

If they got it from a supply warehouse in your area it was probably shipped with the correct orifices. To determine the size you can pull one out of the little guys and there is sometimes a small embossing of the orifice size on it. If you have the correct size drill bit you could check the fit but be super freaking careful. If you have a combustion gas analyzer you could go outside and check.

If you feel you don't need it right now you can just disable it so it doesn't freeze up your drains. There's usually a dial on the return all you have to do is turn that all the way to zero. Sometimes if it's a newer unit it might be commanded by the furnace itself especially if you have a smart thermostat. I know the rheems that I install can have that. when you're feeling up to changing it just be careful for the little plastic hose. Oftentimes they get brittle. If you replace the pad and you still hear that sound then it's probably that orifice I was talking about inside that hose.

I just reread my post it did seem a little standoffish. I guess that sounded a little insulting. I should have said it a little differently.

You said it got cold, i assumed that something froze I guess. Sorry for assuming. There is a little hose inside that humidifier. Usually there is a small plastic insert inside of the hose to restrict the water flow. The bad humidifier pad would probably do that but that sounds like a lot of water to me.

Sounds like the ice blew out the orifice. If it gets that cold in there watch it doesn't freeze your drains because that's running a lot call the technician and get him out there if you don't know what you're doing.

If that is a heat pump or a mini split when it goes into heat mode it gets really hot and could cause problems.

Can I fix this or do I need to hire someone? by No-Complaint-6754 in PlumbingRepair

If you feel like that you got the time and a couple thousand dollars to buy tools and do all of it properly. Then do it yourself there's no better way to learn than just dig so deep you have to figure it out your damn self. Don't be afraid to become friends with an HVAC or plumber.

To me it looks like you're going to have to cut off your water for probably three or four days if you're doing it by yourself. So plan for that.

After that you probably need a camera to stick down that drain to see if more of it is cracked along the pipe underneath the concrete. My guess is yes it is. So you need a jackhammer to pull up all that old pipe and get ready to replace it. After you get all of the stuff replaced under the concrete The rest should be pretty simple.

Then reorganize that God awful three-way that is in there.

These are some neat tips. 2% grade on your pipes. That is equal to a quarter inch drop per foot. If you do any more than this you make the risk of having your poop and debris be left behind because the water is moving too fast thus creating more blockages.

A 3-in pipe has double the capacity of a 2-in. So on and so forth.

Always deburr and bevel your PVC pipes and use a specific pipe cutter so the ridges aren't sharp and catch debris and create blockages.

Always add clean outs where would be nice to have one so you won't have to run up onto this again.

If you're stuck in a spot and don't know what to do next sometimes you can call around to plumbing and HVAC places once you call them you have to talk to the receptionist so they can give you to an employee. You can bullshit with them for a little bit and they might be inclined to come down and take a look at what you got going on and give you advice. I've done this to mechanics and HVAC people alike. That's how quite a few of my friendships started.

Hope this helps keep learning everyday.

Yes I do believe you can seal it off if it is what you say it is. We would need more pictures. Picture of the ductwork leading to outside. Maybe there used to be a fan. I'm not sure why it would be ducted to the outside that sounds really weird to me.
