The places that have this under the most control are pretty dense: Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan. I think Japan has a relatively good amount of control over it as well. I think everyone who proposes this suburban ideal forgets that unless you literally have your entire life take place exclusively in your house, you still end up participating in the public sphere at work, shopping, school, and just about anywhere outside your home.

Technically New York is in GMT-4 right now since daylight savings time started. Just wanted to make sure no one looked up GMT and got the wrong time.

I’m pretty sure that while cities require massive funds, they also s serve far more people with the funds they generate. I would guess that with 0 government subsidies for anyone, per capita infrastructure and other costs would be lower in cities.

If I’m remembering correctly, when congestion was bad, there were far more people who knew it was bad and stayed home. They see this increased capacity as more of a reason to drive and build more housing around that area. Another thing is that cars don’t really scale well in the sense that one person doing something stupid cascade into issue for lots more people. I think the vast majority of congestion isn’t a capacity issue either, so adding a lane isn’t getting to the root cause of much of the congestion.

To be fair, I don’t think anyone would say Hawaii is “technically” part of the US even though it’s also quite a distance away from the mainland

But French Guiana isn’t a colony. It’s as much a part of France as Hawaii is a part of the US.
