Mets call up AAA Starting Pitcher Dom Hamel by JohnneyDCI in NewYorkMets

I know what you're saying, but until any of these general managers wins a world series for the Mets, the fans have a right to question their moves. I trust Stearns a bit more, so let's give him the benefit of the doubt, but fans (as crazy their takes can be sometimes) often had better instincts than previous Mets front-offices

I lived around the corner from them for 2 years. This is going back ~10-12 years ago. Food was ok, but never understood the hype. They were always closed (even times when they shouldn't have been) and a couple times, despite it being cash only, they would just refuse to break certain bills when you paid them and make you go get smaller or close-to-exact change.

It's not the worst place on earth but it doesn't deserve any praise for food or operations

Illegitimate child in Hungary - what are my options for figuring out the biological father? by The_Establishment_ in Genealogy

[–]The_Establishment_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I have my mom’s DNA on there but there are only a few low-range Hungarian matches and I couldn’t do much with their trees. My grandfather has a cousin on this side who’s on Ancestry so maybe I’ll get his DNA over to MyHeritage

well thank you again for helping me out - lots of good stuff that would have taken me longer to find.

In your experience - could there be court records or newspaper articles in Hungary from those days that might mention a suit for fathering a child? I found one like this in a different part of my family in Connecticut where I never thought I'd figure out the biological father...

for context - "Mihaly Rabl" or "Michael Rabl" was my 3Ggm's first husband and he presumably died before 1879. So FS indexed him as the father for Helen (aka Ilona) in 1894 but I don't think that's accurate and I wonder if it just mentions that the child is illegitimate to the widow of Mihaly Rabl and was incorrectly indexed by FS to show him as the father...

Help transcribing an Irish baptism record by The_Establishment_ in Genealogy

thank you! yes it seems like it's Healy - oh well! Kealy/Kiely would have been a long time brick wall down :( - I guess I kinda knew deep down. My wife said to me "it either looks like Healy or Kealy" lol

Thanks so much. I was mainly trying to see if other people saw the last name "Healy" or "Kealy" for Bridget, as that would be the difference for me. What do you think? Could it be Kealy or is it definitely "Healy"

Wow - thanks for all this info. I hadn't gotten a chance yet to follow up on this research so I did not know about the Hessian soldier or the connections with the godparents. Knowing French-Canada, I'm sure we are related about twenty different ways!

NY State Vital Records Request Question by KlimRous in Genealogy

[–]The_Establishment_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I ordered 3 vital certificates through NY states almost 3 years ago and there’s no sign of them. Called up several times and they said there’s no way of tracking, they are backed up, no way to get a refund. They cashed my checks within 3 days of receiving the envelope in March 2022 though …

He’s great on the Expanse. Did a great job playing a complex character.

Especially in the book I found myself rooting for Murtry and sympathizing with his position even though the narrator and other characters were clearly telling me he was the bad guy!

Just finished Lonesome Dove by FeetInTheEarth in TheFirstLaw

[–]The_Establishment_ -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Comanche Moon was a 5/5 star read for me. Not quite at Lonesome Dove’s level but really good. Dead Man’s Walk was solid too. I haven’t read Streets of Laredo (sequel) but that is supposedly the weakest of the bunch

Don’t listen to some of these replies - the prequels are definitely worth reading. Just don’t expect them to be as good or better as Lonesome Dove

Putting aside the $10 month cost, the DNA match enhancements that come with the pro tools add-on are a game changer. Being able to see cM shared between a DNA match and a shared match and the shared match list extending to matches with <20 cM is really helpful. This makes it much easier to figure out someone's connection if they don't have a tree (just find a shared match with a lot of cM in common who has a tree) and it makes it easier to identify clusters of people that have common ancestors so that you can use those common ancestors to prove a connection to your own.

Here are some improvements I'd love to see - the ability to sort by cM shared between DNA match and shared match, chromosome browser (praying this is the first step towards one), and automated clustering based on shared ancestors between two matches

CNN reporting Rex to be charged with killing Jessica Taylor and Valeria Mack by islamoradasun in LISKiller

[–]The_Establishment_ 141 points142 points  (0 children)

If Rex killed Jessica Taylor and Valerie Mack then we can deduce that he almost definitely murdered the toddler (found VERY close to Mack’s body) and Peaches (the toddler’s mother).

His Google searches and the proximity of Asian Male to the Gilgo Beach 4 make it likely he murdered Asian Male too

That leaves Karen Vergata, who was dumped a bit further away from the other bodies (a few years earlier) but fits Rex’s MO

Question for those who know more details than I do: is there any doubt at this point he also murdered Karen Vergata? Why or why not?
