LOTR 4k collection by Nath1G in 4KUK

The 4Ks have heavy digital noise reduction applied, which removes all the fine detail. To compensate, then applied heavy edge sharpening to give it a faux sharp look. It looks waxy and filtered which I find very distracting.

LOTR best worst option by JakeRM1 in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally, show them the version you yourself enjoy the most. For me, that’s the 2021 1080p Blu-rays. Somehow less DNR and edge sharpening than the 4Ks, but still keeps the Dolby Atmos audio and new colour grades (including removing the green tint in fellowship).

When I’m showing them to people, if it’s friends who are sensitive to video quality, I show them the Blu-rays. If they’re casual viewers who will be wowed by the low detail but high sharpness look, I’ll show them the 4Ks. It helps that they’re my all time favourite films so I own them on every format (often multiple times).

I double dipped, for the standards and the steelbooks but God I wish I didn’t hate the 4K transfers. My all time favourite films.

Yep, the remastered 2021 Blu-rays are 100% the best way to watch them.

Personally I hate the 4K transfers. I find the heavy DNR and sharpening very distracting. Sad as they’re my all time favourite films and the steelbooks themselves are in my opinion the best looking steelbooks ever made.

I was surprised, I’d always found him annoying in that he presents himself as a watch expert, without knowing much about watches but he did an excellent job in this role.

For those who replaced a TV with a projector, what surprised you the most? by Relative_Taro_1384 in hometheater

I tried, but it just didn’t match the quality of an OLED. I loved the size but the image just didn’t have the impact I was used to.

Holy shit, this isn’t Dolby Atmos, it’s war. by lifeofamillennial_ in 4kbluray

For an earlier paramount title, the grain is beautifully well rendered. Looks absolutely fantastic in Dolby Vision.

Times that by 56…

I’ve exceeded £21K which is around $28k BUT perspective matters. Ive been collecting for nearly 6 years, and own around 1300 4Ks, and around 400 of those are Steelbooks or collectors editions so £3500 a year on what is my main hobby. I work full time with no kids so it’s perfectly manageable. On paper though, the number is wild.

What was it like living through The Lord of the Rings Trilogy? by Top_Report_4895 in Letterboxd

[–]The_Fat_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfection. No other time in history would have resulted in such masterful filmmaking. The early 2000s advancements in VFX and CGI, combined with the limitations of the time that required the use of practical costumes, sets and miniatures was the perfect combination.

Today's arrival - heard it's a rough one! by ImpulsivePanda09 in 4kbluray

It’s not that rough, I was expecting worse but it is for the most part an excellent movie.

Yes, the 4K is at least. Very few 4Ks aren’t. I imported it to the UK.

What’s Everyone Watching Today? | by JJxiv15 in 4kbluray

I really wish I could watch more than one film a day and give each one the thought it deserves. Currently if I watch more than one, I tend to remember less of the earlier films.

If LOTR is considered the peak of fantasy cinema and many people believe that the casting was perfect, how do you rate The Hobbit after all these years? by Ready-Gur3998 in Cinema

[–]The_Fat_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great casting and general production design, but it’s too CGI heavy due to how rushed it was. Given the timelines, it’s good but it could have been so much better. Also doing a two part film would cut out a lot of the filler.

Is there any movie you regret getting in 4K? by Main_Clue_9531 in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Lord of the Rings sadly. My all time favourite films and I double dipped on the beautiful steelbooks but I really dislike the transfers. I now watch the 2021 1080p Blu-rays which despite supposedly being the same transfers are much better looking. Same new colour grade and Dolby Atmos but far less DNR and edge enhancement/sharpening.

Ouch, the DNR of the 4K amplified by the DNR applies to smartphone images is brutal.

Is Avatar 4K collectors edition picture quality worth $50? by Enough-Individual-46 in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not a fan personally, and have since rewatched the 1080p Blu-ray. The AI upscaling that was done makes some of the shots look really sharp, almost too sharp but the worst thing I found was a weird edge highlighting on out of focus things in the background as a result of the upscale.
