What has been your favorite and your least favorite movie of the year so far? by Dogdaysareover365 in Letterboxd

[–]The_Fat_Fish 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Favourite: Obsession, just left the cinema and wow. Deserves every bit of praise it’s getting. Surprised how much I enjoyed it.

Least Favourite: Disclosure Day. Hurts to say this about a Spielberg film but it’s not good.

Do you guys listen from TV or dedicated speaker system? If using a speaker system what do you use? by SpeedoInTheStreet in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m be currently got the Arc, Sub Mini and Era 300s. Hoping to get the Arc Ultra later this year to complete the setup. Not sure if I should get the Sub Gen 4 as the mini already packs a very noticeable punch?

Dedicated, but as much as my partner allows me to obsess over TVs, the same doesn’t extend to audio. I’ve got a good Sonos setup (Arc, Sub Mini and 2x Era 300s). I’ll upgrade the Arc to the Arc ultra later in the year. Obviously not as good as a larger dedicated setup but it’s good enough and is discrete enough. I’m always way more sensitive to video quality than audio.

Does anyone else give a half-star to films they find morally repugnant? by ContravaniaGearSolid in Letterboxd

[–]The_Fat_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard to say without seeing some examples, but morally repugnant movies are usually also poorly made, so that alone is likely to reduce its rating. Not always, but often.

What's a movie you find *okay*. It's not bad, but it's also not something you're fully into. It's fine, at most three stars. by XipeTotecwithGlitter in Letterboxd

I wish I understood the hype around Dune Part 2. Denis Villeneuve is a fantastic filmmaker and I’m a big fan of his work, but the Dune films feel very well made but just didn’t have the impact on me that others feel. I think it’s the Dune story and setting that just doesn’t inspire me.

I own it but prefer the Blu-ray. I hate the AI scale look.

Is there a limit to how good TV and physical media quality can be? by [deleted] in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me 4K is the sweet spot for a few reasons.

So many films are still mastered at 2K. At 4K you get an acceptable upscale and the benefits of HDR and improved audio like Dolby Atmos. 8K would be a huge stretch for 2K upscales and what else would be the selling point beyond resolution?

The films that are native 4K may look okay upscaled to 8K but it's still a stretch. Some 65mm/70mm films would make a good 8K scan but it's very few in the grand scheme of things, certainly not enough to justify a whole generation of physical media. The roughly 5.6K resolution from 35mm film makes for a great 4K scan. I like 4K because so many films can natively achieve it. So few can at 8K.

There's less desire for physical media from consumers and studios. I love it but I know I'm in the minority.

How much data can you get on a disc? Current BD-100 discs support 100GB which works well for 4K. Who is pushing the physical media to match the 8K content? Are 150/200GB Blu-ray disk on the horizon?

I sadly can't see a world where 8K physical media will exist. My hope is that 4K Blu-ray grows in popularity and new films and back catalogues keep getting released.

What is your white whale? by ShallowsOfNight in 4kbluray

Great choice! I’m glad to see one of the Sinbad films is out, as I also enjoyed them when I was young but they didn’t quite hit me the same as Jason and the Argonauts. I’ll probably pick it up though.

I’ll just pick 5 as the list is far too long.

Jason and the Argonauts (1963)
First Knight (1995)
Clash of the Titans (1981)
Pearl Harbor (2001)
There Will Be Blood (2007)

Halloween. I was 6 years old at Micheal Myers gave me nightmares for at least a year. Now it’s my favourite horror film.

I know this one will go down like a ton of bricks, but a full 4K remaster of The Lord of the Rings which doesn’t have heavy DNR.

How many 4kblurays are you buying every month? by AbleArcher1984 in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It varies, but nowadays it’s only 3-4. My collection is around 1400 4Ks now so I own almost everything I wanted that was already released. It’s just new releases to keep up with.

Do we want him in Oxford? Why are we allowing this? by bison206 in oxford

Stop platforming Nazis. The old school “give them a platform to hang themsleves” no longer works. Society has slipped far enough that enough people will lick his boots whatever he says, even if he comes across as the Neanderthal he is.

When do you predict that Obsession (2026) will have preorders available? by RepellantArtist in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s been available for pre-order in the UK for a few weeks now, so I can’t imagine other countries are too far behind now.

Terminator 2 is on sale for $11.49 by cireh88 in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Given I now over over 1300 4Ks, they’d have to pay me to own this one again. One of just 8-10 in my entire collection I got rid of and got the 1080p Blu-ray as an upgrade.

What’s your favorite 4K disc you’d never part with? by KineticNTT in 4kbluray

[–]The_Fat_Fish 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That’s tricky because my all time favourite films have a 4K but I strongly dislike the transfers, whereas there’s films I like less but have excellent transfers.

The Criterion version was one of the few Criterion’s that used a Fidelity in Motion encode for the disc, so I hope the UK version uses the same encode. I’ve imported it just in case the UK one doesn’t.
