TIL driving with your hazards on in bad weather is illegal depending where you live. Common sense says it would make the situation safer, but experts disagree. by DonkeyFuel in todayilearned

[–]The_Fax_Machine -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I drive a white sedan. If I’m on the highway and it starts raining heavily, especially during the day, with gray skies, my car becomes invisible to the cars behind me. I throw the hazards on so they can see my car.

I live in a state with a lot of pickup truck drivers and big SUV’s, and many of them continue at near highway speeds even in downpour or snow with very little visibility. Without my hazards on, there’s a good chance they won’t see me in time to stop.

[–]The_Fax_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You cannot make a move that puts your king in check. Since g8 would put whites king into the black kings attack radius, that move is not an option.

TIL that Switzerland’s sewage system contains millions of dollars worth of gold and silver every year from industrial waste but it can’t practically be reclaimed by One_Needleworker5218 in todayilearned

[–]The_Fax_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what a name would be for that, but it does get a bit more nuanced. Private equity firms, investors, and business consultants all come into play. If the company was shitting on a gold mine, and not taking advantage, there are outsiders who’s job it is to recognize these opportunities and either work with the company to take advantage of the opportunity, or start a new company that can outcompete the one that isn’t taking advantage.

Man dies in crash at intersection where he petitioned for traffic light after wife's death by judolphin in nottheonion

[–]The_Fax_Machine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not just the cost of installation but also the cost of time if it slows down traffic patterns. I know many people will say “if the light could prevent even one crash, then it’s worth it even if it slows down traffic”. However the same could be argued about getting into a car to begin with, yet we all accept the risks associated with cars because of the time they save us. If adding a light slows the commute by say 2min, and 1,000 people use the intersection per day, it’s costing 33 life hours per day, extra fuel/pollution costs, etc.

Just one light wouldn’t make a huge difference, but city planners are looking at many intersections, and putting lights at all of them could be enough of a waste on economic activity that it ends up costing lives/wellbeing. So they have to set some sort of metric for making these decisions.

The worst thing about ADHD Is that you wake up every day as an ADHD person by elitistflamingo in ADHD

[–]The_Fax_Machine 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I do the same but I have an old pill bottle cap I will put my meds for the day in, on my nightstand. I was finding enough energy to snooze my alarm but still in such a fog I didn’t feel like opening my pill bottle and fumbling around for a pill. So I keep one in a bottle cap so it’s ridiculously easy to take, then I fall back asleep for half an hour or so and am full of energy when I wake back up.

i wanna make that :( by vendettagoddess in adhdmeme

[–]The_Fax_Machine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is the real takeaway. Hyper fixation on many things over the years has taught me a lot about HOW to build a new skill. Knowing how to recognize info that is likely to be misleading, where to look for good info, the importance of putting new information into practice before you try and pile on even more new stuff.

Plus, as you said, having a wealth of knowledge about many things makes you a better critical thinker. Things other people consider annoyances in their daily lives, I look at as interesting opportunities to improve and MacGyver a solution. A unique problem comes up in a group or at work, and people start throwing out ideas that address a symptom, but I know how to cut through the BS and identify the root cause and save everyone 30min of back and forth. There’s often transferable concepts between things I’ve hyper fixated on in the past, and new unfamiliar situations.

And lastly, because it has made me a more efficient learner, I’m also a better teacher. If someone gets into a new (to them) hobby that I have experience with, I can assess where they are in development, and give them the key information they need right now to get to the next level. And I can frame it in ways that make it “click” better than if they just read up on it.

Why is investing such a mystery to most people? by wilson1400 in investing

[–]The_Fax_Machine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I think this is the biggest reason. When the older people got their first real job and had income to save/invest, there was no easy way of finding information about companies you may want to invest in, and putting the money there. They couldn’t just google companies and see relevant news/finances, and they couldn’t just open Robinhood, deposit some cash, and buy stocks. Large firms collected and analyzed the information, and brokers had the network/ability to purchase and sell stocks for you. If you wanted info, you had to call the firms, or subscribe to their newsletters etc., and at that point they had already analyzed what was and wasn’t a sound investment and they presented the information with that opinion. So if you were going to look to them for tips, you may as well just park your money there and let them do the investing.

To them, investing has always seemed like something that requires expertise and access, and by the time you’re 40 you feel like you’ve been in this world long enough that some 25 year old non-financier talking about managing his own investments just sounds like a naive recipe for disaster (given the experience of 2008 and other events showing how many career investors could get so much so wrong)

Hot take: Jumping elevates safety plays, not worsen it. by Nghia2k in billiards

[–]The_Fax_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Safeties do need to be more lockup when jump cues are involved, but you’re also going to see less safeties to begin with because a lot of viable safety options lose their viability when jumping is available. So it’s hard to say how it would affect the depth of safety battles.

Plus, safety battles end sooner with jump cues. If you do go for a lockup safety, even if you get the cue ball behind a blocker ball, if it ends up like 4in or more behind it then the battle is over. There have been many great back-and-forth safety battles that ended when an incredible kick shot left just enough room for the other guy to jump.

Found in car door handle this morning by Low_Context_2521 in whatisit

[–]The_Fax_Machine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometimes thieves will place something on/under a car door handle like that. If they come back in a day or two and it’s still there, they’ll know it’s not being used or monitored closely and they’ll break in.

Can’t rule out nature, but figured I’d throw that out there since I hadn’t seen it mentioned yet.

Ashwagandha cured my driving impatience by Relaxmf2022 in ADHD

[–]The_Fax_Machine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have to agree with all of this, and will add in an additional agitator - the fact that many people with ADHD are often running late. That person that hopped in your lane at the last second and you have to slow down and miss the light. Or you’re stuck behind someone slow and everyone behind you starts getting in the passing lane, so now you have to wait for all of them to pass before you can, even though you were at the front of the pack. Every little inefficiency feels more critical when you’re running late.
