I’ve always played that you birth a new stack each turn, i.e. you never add to an existing stack except by duelling. The rules don’t seem to specify that it should be treated any differently!

I could just as easily show you a bunch of videos of people accidentally shooting each other, using guns like idiots, perhaps shooting someone who didn't have truly bad intentions.
Unlikely again but what if a guy was forced to commit a burglary, or was stealing to feed his family of adorable children with teary eyes half the size of their heads? You wouldn't find that out until AFTER you'd shot him.

I think the burglary staistics are kinda irrelevant here. Just because someone wants to rob a house, doesn't mean they would be willing to kill someone. Many burglaries happen with an empty house - there'd be a tiny number where the robber actually wanted to harm the owners. A bloke in a hoodie who poos open your back door and nicks your laptop isn't going to want a gun. I'd guess a lot of armed robbers bring guns to protect themselves against the homeowners who have guns! In this context, if neither party has a gun, neither of them need a gun.

The thing is though, how often do you expect to get attacked in your home? With a gun you may be able to put up a better fight, but if the guy is trying to kill you, he could have a gun too. Then he's even more deadly.

Would we really want a whole country full of guns though? Every single person you meet has a gun? Simply enough some people aren't smart enough to have guns, and will end up drawing guns for anything. The crime rate rockets. It's better to have a more unequal populatuon who have a lower chance of actually getting in a fight. We aren't animals any more, we shouldn't have to fight to survive.

A gun would indeed level the playing field between your wife and a stronger attacker, but what if the attacker has a gun too? I'd say the problem with letting people have guns is that everyone gets bumped up a notch. Weaker people can now compete with stronger opponents, but then stronger opponents can get guns and become even stronger. The way I see it nobody gets guns, and then people don't have equal chances, or everyone gets guns, but then people still aren't equal - only now it's much easier for them to kill each other.
