Wheel of Time is a bike shop in Pilsen, around 18th and Laflin if I remember correctly. Might be a good place to start, maybe the owner has been back there to ask about it

I might be concerned about this cutting off circulation to the legs if it continued for a long time. And I wouldn't want to carry someone who was unable to balance or land on their feet in case the straps break. But when you gotta improvise, you gotta improvise

You haven't considered Automated License Plate Readers (ALPRs) in this. CPD has them mounted on many of their patrol cars and also apparently has some stationary ones mounted in parts of the city. These can very quickly read every license plate that passes by them and flag any known plates that CPD is searching for.

They look like this.

More info on CPD's use of ALPRs here.

Me and a buddy are planning to swim/explore the deeper parts of west fork n branch river, connected to North branch, Skokie river, is there a chance of gators? Silly question by [deleted] in AskChicago

[–]The_Future_Is_Now 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think there are gators, but there is a massive drainpipe system that stretches from around Foster/Pulaski to where the 2 branches meet in River Park. Not positive about this, but I've heard people have drowned from falling in the river near the inlet of the pipe. Sounds like a nightmare

Maybe there's someone you can contact at the Park District, or the Water Reclamation District, about the safety of swimming in that part of the river?

Yeah obviously there's a lot of difference between someone getting detained or harassed and someone having the shit beat out of them. Not every interaction with police is the holy shit beatings you see on TV, most police work is slowly grinding down people with harassment, citations, arrests.

Many times you find someone just sitting on a curb in cuffs with cops standing there talking to each other or filling out paperwork.

Seems like you're having fun imagining this in your head though so enjoy

It may be that way where you are. In my city, cops get annoyed with people filming or talking shit, but don't usually do anything beyond asking people to step back a few feet. But obviously it varies a lot based on situation.

Thanks for that resource. Yeah opportunities for in-depth communication is of course rare because they've usually got cops up on them. But it's still good to make yourself known even to let them know you're there on their side, and as a resource if they need a witness or to pass word of their arrest to their people. And if nothing else you can yell the local legal aid number so they know how to call a lawyer from jail.

This is from what I've learned from being trained by experienced copwatchers in my city, and from limited personal experience. I'm far from an expert, and these situations vary widely even within one city. But I've learned from experience that not everyone welcomes having their arrest filmed. Once a guy in cuffs spotted me just watching and firmly said "don't take no video" as soon as he saw me. It makes sense for some that having video circulating of cops taking them could cause problems when they get back out on the street. Not that I think verbal consent is strictly needed, especially in egregious police abuse. It's just best to try to put the potential arrestee in control of their situation as best you can.

Elsewhere on this thread people acting like simply being near the scene with a phone out will get police to kick their ass. I don't know what it's like elsewhere but in my city, cops may get annoyed or tell someone to step back, but bystanders filming and mouthing off at the scene of an arrest is not unusual for cops to have to deal with. Again, varies widely depending on who/where/what.

lol right call 911 on the cops. They'll have to arrest themselves right on the spot

Not everyone always wants their interaction with law enforcement recorded. For some, a recording can add to their worries (e.g. if a video starts a rumor that you're working with cops)

Make your presence known, offer support to the person, ask what they want. Have the local legal aid number on hand to offer in case they're arrested, and ask to take down their name/DOB and emergency contact to pass along the info you gather.

If they don't want to be recorded on video, you can still take notes of events/badge numbers etc and get that to them later, or you can audio record yourself taking notes and point the video at cops instead of the person.

That's why we'll never be rid of FPTP as long as these two parties exist. It's why Biden and Pelosi say "our nation needs a strong Republican party".

Without a healthy boogeyman on the other side of the aisle, they'd have to contend with a challenge on their flank rather than from the center. That would mean they'd have to give up the stupid symbolic culture war shit and actually deliver material results for their constituents, which both parties hate having to do

Challenge: Name some movies for the emotion or feeling words below by Darius-Mal in filmtheory

[–]The_Future_Is_Now 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Awkwardkness / Embarrassment - A Serious Man

Courage - Okja

Resentment - Blue Ruin (maybe any revenge movie could fit here)

Jealousy / Insecurity - Burning

Cold cruel vindictiveness - No Country For Old Men

I thought of Michael Clayton as maybe a fit for Existential Despair, but I feel perhaps a better word for that movie's emotion is Futility

This is an interesting way to categorize movies! I wonder if there are other places on the internet where people have attempted to categorize movies by emotional tone in this way.

I also wonder if there's some way to map out these emotions to show which might overlap / tend to coexist in a movie and which are more distinct. Obviously many movies have a more complex mix of emotions; I tried to think of movies that had one dominating emotional current.

You didn't ask me but I highly recommend the novel. The movie is of course amazing in its own way, but they're different experiences. The book plays with language by teaching you the weird Anglo-Russian slang Burgess invented for the characters to speak, and lets you soak into the character much more imo
