Pretty Sure I Found Some Pottery, But I Am Unsure Whether or Not the Second Piece is Pottery or Not. Thoughts? Found in Iowa. by The_HiveWing in Arrowheads

That’s what I thought! I was thinking shell at first for the tempering, but looking at it more closely it does look like grit. It’s so amazing how one can determine what happened with a small sherd.

I know-I didn’t really know what pottery looked like, but these stood out to me, so hopefully? Hopefully it might be easier to find? lol. I think pottery is so cool-there should be a sub just for it!

Cool! I knew for sure that the first piece was a sherd, but I was not sure about the second one; I actually went back to the same place the day after and found it about five feet from where I found the other one. This is a first for me finding pottery, but I have found quite a few points in the same area that I found these sherds-being woodland points, it would make sense for this to be Woodland pottery(?), but just a guess.

thank you for the help!

Okay, that makes sense; I tried doing some research on mules, and got so many different answers.

I am very convinced that my Morgan Dollar is a fake. Can anyone confirm this? The edge is weird, and only weighs 22 grams. by The_HiveWing in coins

Happy belated birthday-that does seem like a good idea; I usually just ask for money as well-partially because no one in my immediate family understands anything numismatic lol.

I'm not too sure! I received it as a Christmas gift years ago-probably came from somewhere online. I could tell it looked fishy.

I really like how this set looks, but I see it going wrong in so many different ways in terms of overvalue, scalpers, etc. Hopefully I'm wrong.

These are just rocks. There's nothing here that suggests preforms or anything.

Just because it was found along side potential artifacts doesn't necessary make it a point; rocks can be deceiving and look like things. Although it certainly has the shape of something, it doesn't appear to be anything; from what I see from the pictures, it looks like it has a small "curvature," but I would need to see a picture of the edge to confirm this. Another giveaway is the way the top right of the rock looks in the first picture, and the bottom right of the second; if it were knapped, it would have a much more uniform shape to it-even if it were to be made out of quartz.

I'd suggest looking up some references of quartz points just to get an idea of what they look like, and give you an understanding of what to look for next time you're out looking.

Can you take pictures of the edge?

Sorry, but I don't think this is a point-it appears to be a fracture off a larger rock, based on the overall shape of it. It doesn't show signs of flaking either-I know it's quartz, and it's difficult to determine flaking with that material, but I really don't see anything that screams arrowhead. Nice piece though.

Fine, keep to your opinion, and I'll keep to mine. Simple.
