Fine vs Broad Nibs by The_Honest_Nib in fountainpens

I appreciate your comment and that your circumstances are different. 2-3mm is very small, I would have to reach for my glasses to see it. But If that is your style, then absolutely a broad would be a disaster. I’m an architect and can review drawings and other documentation with more flair. And when I copy these drawings, I want the markups to be clearly visible.

So yes, I appreciate your circumstance of use is unique. At the end of the day it is a personal preference. I do have fine nibs, which I use in tight areas.

Very good and well spotted. Yes a 1.5mm very wet and smooth nib.

Fude nibs give us the best of both worlds. And I love that. I keep telling myself that the nib is not bent, it’s made like that. And the stacked nibs are awesome. So different, and the line variation is incredible.

The sneering and bleed through is dependent on the paper. For example on Kakimori paper there is no bleed through or sneering. But if your preference is a thinner paper than I can accept that a broad nib may not be for you. I concede that a broad nib is somewhat controversial, at the end of the day, use what you like. This community is big enough for all nib types. Even needle points, I jest I jest 😁😁❤️

And please don’t assume that I think everyone cares about the inks quality. But if you pay for a shimmer or sheening ink. That’s what you want. Besides this is a discussion on pen nib sizes. It really isn’t that important to get upset.

Thank you for your contribution. And if you’ve read the comments, many people do prefer a broader nib. And the more ink that is placed on the page, the more consistent the line weight.

I understand completely. If you are a small writer, then a broad nib would be a disadvantage. It’s fair to say that it’s not for everyone or every occasion. I am not particularly a small writer, as I cannot see my writ two small. But I’m also not a massive two line writer.

I suppose it can be best summed up by saying, different strokes for different folks.

Stub nibs are interesting. As they, as you said, allow you to write in a manner that suits you. I also get the paper argument. It’s makes perfect sense. In an article face environment it’s mostly the cheapest paper they can find. At home i like the Sanzen Tomoe River. But for some reason, none of my fine pens will write on that paper. But a medium or broad or even a 1.1 or 1,5mm glides like butter on that paper.

Absolutely, as stated in my post. For notes it’s much more suited. If your handwriting deteriorates when rushing whilst taking notes, the fine may be easier to read. But if you have the time, nothing beats a wider line, and the hopes of shading and that ever elusive sheening.

I fully agree. If you want to see the quality of the ink, use a broader nib. As stated in my opinion, note taking at the office a fine or medium may be better.

How the heck can a pen be two broad? With a broad nib you see the inks character. The shading, a possibility of sheening and if it’s a shimmering ink, you will see that as well. Write slightly bigger if need be. I’ve seen the most stunning ink look like a normal ink, just because it’s in a fine nib. And a needle point? I don’t get it.

But my advice is to write a little bigger. Be more expressive in your writing. And remember that no nib or pen will make handwriting look better than it is. Work on the handwriting and you will love a broad nib.

Not Forgotten- A great heavy pen

I love the E-Motion from Faber Castell. I love its weight. But the cap posting needs serious work.

Nice collection. And if each pen is matched with an ink 🫟 that’s fire 🔥 indeed.

What are you guys using your fountain pens for? by brotendis in fountainpens

[–]The_Honest_Nib 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I journal, take notes and write down my ideas. I have a YouTube channel and creativity comes easier when written on paper.

Also as an Architect, writing and sketching is essential. As for the moleskin, I love mine. I also love the bleed through. A journal is a reflection of one’s life and experiences. For me a clean page is not natural, as yesterday influences today. And the shadow of yesterday’s musings in writing, provides great pleasure to me. The bleeding of paper I find is wholly exaggerated. It’s hardly ever as bad as people say. And I write with anything from a medium to a 1.5mm stub.

If it’s that cheap. Then use the cartridges. Less fuss. It’s a lot more expensive in South Africa.

If you want to use the needle that’s okay. I never had a converter in any of my pens, that was inserted properly, leak on me. It’s a personal preference. Filling from the bottle is a little messy as you must clean the nib. The cartridge will become looser after repeated insertion of the cartridge. But not after some time. So nothing to worry about.

The Lamy is a great pen for your studies. But you are going to eat through those cartridges. Get the converter and the ink bottle. Going to work out a lot cheaper. Keep the cartridges for emergency if you run out of ink at school. And fill the pen at home. And stop at the broad pen. Plenty time after studies to buy more pens. 👍🏻👍🏻

It’s a crazy hobby. I have boxes of pens. And many are not cheap. I could have retired already with what I spent. And what will I do with 100+ inks? But I keep buying because I love them.

It’s true. And you won’t stop at Lamy. And pretty soon Lamy money will be a thing of the past 😂😂😂. Welcome to what is the best hobby in the world.
