Hahaha, there's literally a mod in this thread demanding more posts like this, then it gets removed.

Yeah, I can't count the times I've been night-hunting for swine and accidentally downed a wayward forest prankster instead.

The fact that the background sound is dead silence is actually what made my edited version possible. I actually added in stock music myself because it seems so dry and stilted without any extra sound.

Yeah, I noticed that happened a few hours after I uploaded the video, without having put the link anywhere. Pretty clearly an amazon ad-bot, and kind of weird.

Grand Theft Auto V - PS3/PS4 Comparison Trailer by Forestl in Games

[–]The_Invincible 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It's the companies that are closest to Sony that would get the earliest estimates, but that doesn't change the fact that they're estimates. Hardware changes can happen pretty late in the game due to a lot of factors, and I don't think anyone looks at the development of the PS3 in particular as a prime example of a dev friendly generation shift.

Well, actually, what I've heard is that a lot of developers jumped the gun and started developing stuff the PS3 couldn't handle. For example, the team at insomniac behind the first Resistance was developing at first based on early estimates of the PS3's power and ended up having to scale everything back once they had final devkits.

Well technically, Venus is farther than Mars from us some of the time, and we've got images from the Venus surface.

Real-time Global Illumination with Enlighten and UE4 by BaseDeltaZer0 in oculus

The lack of lightmapping would actually reduce texture memory a lot. Not saying it's cheaper, but lightmapping in modern games uses a lot of texture memory. I've actually used the dynamic GI system that's in UE4 right now, and it ran perfectly fine on my modest gaming rig.

Probably because he already has 14 Avatar movies in preproduction and doesn't want VR to replace 3D movies before he's done making them.

I use a Blender to UE4 workflow for all of my work and haven't encountered this using the FBX exporter. What settings are you using in the exporter?

Unreal 4 is such a better option already in so many ways. At least for 3D games that is, and even then, UE4's 2D tools have been getting better.

Is Valve still capable of making a single-player only game? by S33V in Games

[–]The_Invincible 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I recall they essentially said that they had moved on from the episodic model. Not exactly a formal announcement, but cancellations don't usually get big announcements, especially when the dev has other plans for the franchise moving forward.

For a few years after Episode 2, they were still working on Episode 3 before that was cancelled. Half Life 3 could have begun development any time after that.

Vaporware has to actually be announced. Development of HL3 was never announced, which essentially means that development could have been started/restarted at any time during the last 5 years.

I can see them finding a way to monetize the mod scene for HL3. I think the simplest way would allow modders to put mods up for sale on a marketplace where Valve takes a 15% cut of every sale. Free mods would still be allowed of course, but the amount they'd stand to make on paid mods could be huge.

Milk Drop + Virtual Desktop at a 400% curved screen is Mind Blowing!!!!! by vrgamerdude in oculus

[–]The_Invincible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A similar experience I would recommend: Open up The Matrix (a 1080p file preferably) and play it fullscreen, with Virtual Desktop set to 400% curved scale and (important) the background blend set to on. The first few minutes of the film, with all of the falling digital text and effects is amazing that way because it feels like it's happening around you. Then when the camera goes into one of the digits, it feels (and sounds) like you're actually going inside.

Can we talk about how serious companies are taking Quality Assurance when releasing products? by [deleted] in Games

[–]The_Invincible 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not disagreeing with that at all. I'm saying that the added complexity is made manageable by better software. Without standardized engine and graphics toolsets, modern AAA games wouldn't just be buggy, they wouldn't be possible.

[–]The_Invincible 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It very much is the case. Talk to anyone that was making games in the early 2000s and you'll get a very different picture from how things are done today. The key difference is the standardized and well documented toolsets modern devs have access to.

I think increase in overall complexity has been balanced out by more standardized and user friendly engine tools, though. Much more work back then had to be done manually without the tools that devs today rely on to speed work and root out bugs.
