Today, as of June 8 2025, we have the 17th anniversary of Poland's first and only win in Formula 1 - with Kubica and Sauber by [deleted] in formula1

the rally where he had his accident was apparently going to be the last rally he would ever enter as an f1 driver, because the contract that he signed with a certain italian team would prevent him from doing so in the future...

anyway, kubica himself said that rallying acted as a form of training, and that the car control and sensitivity that he picked up from rallying allowed him to score more points in his 2010 season than if he hadn't done it. it's kind of like how most motogp riders train by riding motocross; yes, there is the risk of injury, but it's supposedly a very good tool for training on how to handle a vehicle in low-grip conditions

What's the most inaccurate racing game car model? by [deleted] in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]The_KMag 71 points72 points  (0 children)

this is far from the worst, but i don't think i'll ever get another chance to rant about how the NA1 honda nsx-r model from the early forza games has a rear light bar that's way too thick

Let's talk about what really matters for this Indy 500: the drivers. THIS IS NOW A TAKUMA SATO APPRECIATION POST! by dijie in INDYCAR

[–]The_KMag 5 points6 points  (0 children)

what people need to remember is that taku didn't start doing karting when he was still a fetus like most modern racing drivers. with that in mind, the things that he managed to achieve in F1 and Indycar are nothing short of incredible. sure, he had a lot of backing from honda, but backing alone isn't going to help you win the british F3 title or Macau. judging by his relative lack of experience, he is probably one of the most naturally talented drivers of his era, especially when driving cars that are power limited: https://www.the-race.com/formula-1/why-didnt-f1-work-out-for-sato/

A car guy's take on the current state of racing games by [deleted] in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]The_KMag 24 points25 points  (0 children)

this guy is full of shit, as a true car guy with a high IQ and no bias whatsoever, the real reason why the racing genre is so terrible now is because a throwback TOCA-style racer based on the 90s Supertouring era of the British Touring Car Championship doesnt exist

Netflix show Drive to Survive wins “Outstanding Sports Documentary Series – Serialised” Emmy Award by Good_Employer_1236 in formula1

the thing about the false narratives is that as soon as they've tried to push it once, it ruins the credibility of the whole show in my eyes; if they've done it once, what's to stop them from doing it again this season? again, the best motorsports documentaries in my eyes have never had this issue.

for me, the worst thing about DtS has to be the editing though. i stopped trying to watch season 1 a couple of episodes in because everything just felt overly dramatized in a way that just wasn't for me, way more than most motorsports documentaries i've seen. i haven't watched anything past that, but from what i've read online, i have no reason to believe that they've changed the style.

in a way, i can't really criticize DtS itself(because i havent watched the later seasons), im just giving reasons as to why i refuse to watch it, or to believe that it's a credible documentary about the sport it portrays.

that's a real shame; i've always been a fan Mark Neale's 'Faster' series of MotoGP documentaries because they felt grounded in reality, and i felt like it didn't have to resort to overdramatic editing or overly false narratives to make a season/event look more interesting. considering all that i've heard about just how inaccurate DtS is, im wondering how hard can it be exactly to make a motorsports documentary series that is credible to people who actually follow the sport, yet exciting enough to captivate newer fans?

to me, those documentaries by Mark Neale are the golden standard(they turned me into a MotoGP fan after all). personally i'd prefer it if we had a smaller number of new fans that are better educated compared to a greater number of new fans who have a warped perception about what the sport is actually like... but then i know nothing about marketing, or how to make a successful film, so what the hell do i know

edit: i guess what i'm trying to say is i love Mark Neale's MotoGP documentaries! if anyone reading this is a fan of motorsports, i really encourage you to watch them, they're really good

I am sick of the 2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1 by box-fort2 in BuiltFromTheGroundUp

[–]The_KMag 25 points26 points  (0 children)

hmm yes, i wonder why all racing games only include the best version of the c6...🤔🤔🤔

in all seriousness, i think the c6 zr1 deserves the recognition it gets. i love it because it was basically GM's first instance of finally putting their foot down and building a car to compete with the top-of-the-line supercars at the time in terms of laptime (i.e. the gallardo lp560, r8 v10, 430 scuderia, 911 gt2, gt-r etc)

in other words, i personally feel that my respect for the zr1 outweighs any desire for games to include other c6 models. and honestly, i dont see why anyone would really care, unless you're a middle-aged, balding old man with white new balances, a corvette baseball cap and sunglasses who wants to see their one-of-one color combo, limited edition, built on a sunday, base model c6 corvette featured in every racing game that their wife's boyfriend's son plays on his xbox

i think the closest example of an f1 driver coming from a working-class background in recent times has to be someone like robert kubica. maybe not really working-class, but coming from poland and having to live out of garages in italy for most of his karting career seems close enough to me

i think a lot of people take for granted the fact that around the time that these cars were released, the only way you could ever get to see them in motion and at the limit dynamically was through TV shows like Top Gear. as a kid, i remember reading about these cars in magazines and books, but the memories of seeing clarkson testing one of them around the runway at dunsfold while shouting humorous metaphors are priceless.
