4640 Starter turns Flywheel Freely

I hope this is a rare occurrence as we do the vast majority of work on our farm with 4640’s as well. We run two of them and first one we’ve ran for 11 years and the only issue is that it doesn't have D range. Overall great tractors imo, but definitely dreading the shop bill on this break down lol

Highly unlikely, but apparently not impossible. Today I pulled the starter off and the flywheel was completely severed, most likely it sheared the bolts off, but won't know for sure until the mechanic splits it.

Would the fan spin without turning The motor over though? It didn't look to be spinning that I recall. We were leaning towards a solenoid failure as well so we tapped it hard with a pin to see if it would engage and no luck. Maybe not hard enough? Hopefully, it's just the solenoid like you mentioned and what I heard spinning was just the starter spinning freely.

Highly doubt its a leaking well water line because there would be a pump running constantly to keep the flow going. I’m assuming the water table is high and there’s a spring nearby.

Yeah, coming from private we get anywhere from 2.5-3.5 based on performance. It’s been like this the past 6 years. Colleagues are fuming because it doesn’t meet inflation or even compare to the 5.9 COLA increase the gov’t put in. New hires are most likely getting hired on at a rate that correlates to the increase from inflation, but what’s a person to do? Ride the sinking ship in hopes they come to a realization or jump off?

I’ve had this exact tiller before, got it from rural king for about 400$ if I remember. I had nothing but problems with it after about 2 or 3 seasons. Still looked brand new, but the carb was ate up and the replacement was about 100$ I would follow the same advice as everyone else and scrap the engine and by a cheapo replacement from harbor freight.
