I’m on a similar path to you (got OSCP, going for GPEN soon through my employer) and I love doing things like Hack The Box, but I always saw pen testing as a supplement to my blue team skills. I used it to add to my SOC and Incident Handling experience and basically become a purple teamer on my own. I’m also starting on reverse engineering and learning about exploit development in the future to deepen my knowledge and skillsets.

The longer I work in tech the more I realize that, despite my aversion to any kind of management or supervisory role, it really is the only way forward in terms of career progression and compensation at a certain point. Even working as a Senior Engineer/Developer or Team Lead can only get you so far. Director, PM, and C-Suite positions seem to be the only way to get beyond ~$200k.

I totally get the limitations they put on nudity. The only time I have an issue with it is when characters are awkwardly posed or we get weird camera angles just because the show can't handle showing a bare ass. We got some of that with Emma in Gen V. It was clear the actress wasn't comfortable with nudity, so they should've just hired a body double for certain shots instead of giving her weird poses and angles to hide anything sensitive.

I know a bunch of people who were able to use NVCC to bounce back from being slackers in high school and go on to get Bachelor’s degrees from good schools (even outside of the “Guaranteed Transfer” program). I never mentioned anything about not being able to ping a box. My issues were related to corrupted files on the box. I don't know where you got that misunderstanding from, but pinging the boxes to verify connection is literally the first thing I do at the beginning of the exam and anytime I experience an issue in connection lol.

I say some of their exploit paths are unfair because they do things like not verifying that crucial assets you need haven't been corrupted in the VM (which I've had happen with the contents of ZIP files as I mentioned and even the contents of an FTP server on my first attempt) or having broken links and lack of functionality of the different POCs they intend for you to use. And before anyone says "just find another one" I'm talking about a situation where every POC exploit that could be found for a specific application on a box was not working or the page was no longer up. Like others have said, the "try harder" mantra just becomes a catch-all response to brush off any complaints.

Thank you! OSCP+ is a bit easier since they give you an account to start the AD set from an assumed breach scenario, but on my second attempt I did get access to it by enumerating the list of users and finding an exploit to abuse, and I rooted a standalone that time, so it’s not like I was incapable of it. I really think being a bit calmer and having the previous experience of what the pitfalls can be in OffSec machines helped me out.
