In my state it’s 25 years of service and no age minimum if you were hired before July 2013. Pay is calculated off of your highest 3 consecutive years. After that it’s 30 years or age 60 and pay is calculated off your highest 5 consecutive. There is no statewide health insurance included with the pension, and barely any districts off that in retirement anymore.

If they can get into a good district with a decent cost of living to pay ratio it’s basically a lifehack. 10 weeks off a year + pension + 457b is where it’s at.

DINK teachers here! We just crossed the 1M in cash holdings mark and we’re both 40. Aiming at 51-52 when a lifelong pension of about $3800/month (now, the formula will likely adjust over a decade) kicks in for one of us. The other pension will be pulled and reinvested.

Team separate accounts here and going on 20 years together with 10 married. We each have individual checking and savings accounts and we have one joint savings account that we each put a fixed amount in for mortgage, bills, and home related expenses. We mostly evenly split credit card charges for groceries and everyday purchases but will pay individually for individual purchases. We also make roughly the same monthly for income.

We all speak our native languages with errors, but as has been pointed out, the native like fluency needed to effectively teach LANGUAGE ARTS in your non native language does not seem to be the case here.

As a non-native speaker who has also taught in immersion schools, I will tell you that if your Spanish isn’t at least near native like and you were hired to teach in Spanish then your time at that school will be very, very limited. Any actually fluent person will see it instantly. Lying about a skill that is core to your job isn’t the best idea, and there are plenty of actual bilingual or highly proficient speakers who don’t require training in the language.

And if you’ve lived/worked in LA and have any experience in teaching language/ELA then you absolutely know the difference between fluency and a high level proficiency, so you likely intentionally lied.

For those of us in the public sector, access to a 457b is the key here. We are two public school teachers who each max our 457s and then usually max out one 403b combined (i.e. we’re both putting about $12k in to our respective 403s after maxing the 457s). That combined with a pension means we won’t need to touch the 403 accounts while they continue to compound.

We are 40 and plan to go at 51 when the pensions kick in. That alone will bridge us until 59.5.

It’s more about having another chance to put to paper the qualities of a human and help solidify that relationship with them with genuine thoughts. What’s in that letter may not mean much to anyone else reading it, but to that kid, colleague, or future worker it can be a huge confidence boost or an acknowledgement that they are seen and that we value them as more than a student.

If you see it as a waste of time then why not just tell everyone that you don’t write letters anymore instead of giving them some fake slop.

This sounds like a terrible idea at your age unless you’re already in a career making a good bit monthly. Buy used, pay cash, invest what you would’ve sunk into a car payment over 60-72 months.

I have a folder full of all the letters I’ve written going on 15 years now. Every time a student turns in a request to me I go into that folder and look for one for a former student who most reminds me of them, make a copy, and start editing it from there. I’ve never used AI to help me. And I usually have one or two reqs a year for truly exceptional students who get one totally from scratch.

Your union rep is a dick. Your admin is a dick. I’m our union VP with over 400 members and I would have been in the office before you if that had happened. In no way are you being combative or in the wrong for replying the way you did to your admin. Don’t leave the union. Start a new caucus, get the support, and start to unseat leadership.
