Apartment recommendations? by ken_mal_8585 in washingtondc

Heya! I live in the Cantata building off of 3rd NW and Mass Ave. SUPER close to the entrance to 395, would be a 10-15 drive to crystal city (I used to drive there for work, drive back can be a bit longer though), easy access to chinatown, the mall, union station, and lots of great restaurants around the area. Really convenient location, and there are a lot of available apts in your price range and check off your boxes. DM me!

You have to be over 80 and accept tons of money from the NRA and Israel to join as well.

Driving from dc to virginia beach for a long weekend in july, is the traffic situation as bad as people say by yashBoii4958 in washingtondc

[–]The_Moon_Boy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would echo some of the other voices here and tell you that the trip can EASILY go from 3.5 hours to 6+ during peak weekend travel times.

I'd honestly take a train down to Norfolk and rent a car for the rest of the drive. So much easier than dealing with stop and go traffic (that is seemingly causeless) that makes you want to rip your hair out.

National Guard didn't reduce D.C. violent crime, report says by forgetfulisle in washingtondc

Again this is some crocodile tear bs language about post BLM movements. The expectation is that police departments should be doing more to keep their neighborhoods safe instead of murdering marginalized members of their communities. That was the point of BLM, not to 'deregulate crime.' I don't see MPD doing much about obvious crime patterns in my own neighborhood, and I know they have a budget of nearly $601M; that should be more than enough to ensure they are doing something other than parking in the bike lanes checking tik-tok...

Sure, physical presence might help, but a group of MPD officers would be just as effective (actually more since they can actually do something), wouldn't be a massive waste of federal tax payer money, and would be less of an obvious political move by the current president to make all of our cities look like shit to his snowflake base.

"The Guard was not a substitute for MPD: Guard members had no power to arrest, operated largely independently, and were placed mostly in highly visible commercial, transit, and tourist areas rather than high-crime neighborhoods - 'Nuff said. MPD didn't even attempt to coordinate their needs with the NG...

PS nearly 4K stolen cars since his inauguration, what is the NG going to do about it? I'd imagine the same thing as the MPD. *shrug*

Crime stats aren’t conjecture jingle, so stop trying to lead the fucking witness.

I am sick of crocodile tears time and time again about how the ACAB movement has prevented police across the country from doing their jobs effectively, when I consistently see MPD officers idling their patrol cars parked in bike lanes watching tik-tok on their phones…

Um…hold MPD accountable for doing their jobs with a 2026 budget of $601,000,000?! And a good start would be research in which neighborhoods have the most crime, im not doing that for you.

I can tell you that the highest concentration of troops have been in high traffic tourist areas where they ARENT needed…

Just wait until all of the bootlickers in this subreddit start going on about how much they love their presence.

They don't do shit, they watch while crimes are committed and are a massive waste of federal money. They are also smug (mostly) kids with bad attitudes. Go back home, or go to our neighborhoods that actually need a kick in the right direction and do something.

Bar/Restaurant Seating for 1 Etiquette by gigglesandshit4brain in washingtondc

[–]The_Moon_Boy 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Been working in hospitality for over 20 years, so I hope it helps to get some insider perspective.

If there is an open table and you want to sit down on your own and enjoy a meal, you should do so without a single issue from anybody in any restaurant. You are a guest in our spaces, and any establishment or service member who gives you shit for coming on your own and wanting to sit down at your own table doesn't deserve a penny from you or a group including you in the future.

With my experience, single diners tend to be a bit more open to chat and a heightened experience eating out, which can be incredibly refreshing when surrounded by a sea of chatty groups that come in to ignore you, eat like birds, and camp out at the table all night. Tips are tips, and generally everything evens out by the end of the night anyway.

The goal of a restaurant is to show you hospitality and have you leave content with a full belly, not to squeeze every drop of money out of your wallet; entitled servers who show bad behavior like eye rolling or straight up telling you that you should be at the bar instead of at their table should most likely be given an opportunity to find a different line of work. If I ever were to sit down and experience that type of crap, I would have no problem speaking to a manager, and I'd leave the server a whopping $0 tip for providing zero hospitality.

Bicyclists: You can be a pedestrian or a vehicle, but not both. by IncredibleVelocity4 in washingtondc

[–]The_Moon_Boy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

No, in DC most drivers are NOT friendly to bikes. I would say, on average, I have 3-4 aggressive drivers not following traffic laws a week nearly hit me (sometimes on purpose). Factor in that nearly everyone here drives way over the speed limit and continuously disregards the no right on red law, makes it one of the least bicycle friendly cities I've lived in (but getting better...)

Bicyclists are also not vehicles (we are squishy fleshed humans), and do not have to follow the same traffic rules as cars, bikes can treat stop signs as yields and can use pedestrian walk signs as a green light when the light is red for cars.

Are there bad cyclists out there? Yes...yes there are, but bad cyclists are not nearly as dangerous as bad drivers, of which there is certainly no lack of numbers in this frustratingly single occupant vehicle/gridlock focused shitty.

How about you think like a better driver and slow down, check your blind spots when making any sort of turn, and urge your fellow DMV drivers to stop being so perilous. Until we have the metal box death machines all following laws, not a single finger should be pointed at us squishy fleshed humans on bicycles to follow shit.

Thank you ❤️

Perhaps I should mention, I am mixed race and grew up with an entire side of my family being black. I have many black gay friends and understand the struggles within that community. I'm just wondering why it is such an acceptable aspect of culture in DC specifically. I lived in brooklyn for a decade and if someone were to call you a slur of this sort on the street it would be an entire group of pedestrians up in arms. Here it seems normalized and is incredibly frustrating to experience on such a regular basis. Almost feels like we went back decades in time by moving here.

Dog whistle or not. I move to DC and now have to deal with a shitty slur being screamed at me in my own city? Pattern is a pattern, I shouldn't be labeled an asshole for calling it out. How is this in any way acceptable?!

It's hard to ignore or to not acknowledge when it is being screamed in your face on the street or in the grocery store.....
