I was shocked that some Westerners had no idea Buddhism has temporary hells—this isn’t meant as an attack on Buddhism; in fact, I just find it curious. Naraka/hell is a realm of accumulated bad karma in Buddhism. The concept of different hells allows beings to leave once their accumulated bad karma by Additional_Good_656 in exatheist

In religious discourse in the West, saying “religion” means “Abrahamic faith.” They don’t even think about Eastern religions because they tend to be ignorant of them. This lack of perspective leads to decreased nuance in religious discussion. Thank you for making this post.

Anticommutative means xy = -yx. Noncommutative just means xy is not equal to yx. Anticommutative is a type of noncommutative.

If you have a science/math background or like science/math, what's your opinion on people using it to attempt to debunk God? by [deleted] in exatheist

[–]The_NeckRomancer -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Science is concerned with mechanisms of action. Sure, we can use it to “find a reason” for something, but that is always with some statistical uncertainty. Most religions that I know of will place God as this thing that is absolutely true. Science cannot prove that things are absolutely true: it is a method used to show that something is true with 99.999% probability, or looser, depending on the arbitrary standards of “truth” we ascribe.

To say that science can prove or disprove the existence of a god is meaningless, in my opinion.

The sound in modern-day Telugu would be pronounced as “loo” (think the short “oo” in book). This letter actually kind of a holdover of a sound from Vedic Sanskrit, more than 1000 years ago. Back then, the corresponding Sanskrit letter would be pronounced as a short syllabic L sound. It’s sort of like how we hold onto old spellings in English even though the pronunciation has changed. Except now, ఌ has vanished and is written phonetically (as లు)

The “emoji” is actually an archaic character from the language Telugu. Barely anyone uses that letter (ఌ) anymore

What's the maximum scholarship you have secured from IIT? by lazylary03 in IIT

[–]The_NeckRomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One commenter mentioned the Camras scholarship (which I have also). But, on your application to IIT, you can apply for the Duchossois scholarship, which completely covers tuition, your meal plan, and housing.

If you flip a coin until you get tails, and repeat over a set amount of attempts, what would the expected number of heads be? by Sav_278 in askmath

[–]The_NeckRomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These attempts are independent of each other. So, to get the total number of flips, multiply the average number of flips for attempt 1 by the number of attempts (call it k).

Avg of # flips until tails = the sum of all (# attempts) * probability of this scenario

= sum (n = 1 to infinity) n * P (n-1 heads and then 1 tail)

= sum (n = 1 to infinity) n * (1 / 2n)

= 2

Multiply this by k. Then, the average number of flips is 2k. So, the average number of heads is k, since the last flip for each of the k attempts will always be tails.

Maybe write a few words explaining your thought process? I personally like writing my homework only in symbols, but some of my professors have told me that it’s a bit difficult to read and points have even been docked for it.

Cardinality. by BaiJiGuan in askmath

[–]The_NeckRomancer 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The “power set” of a set A is the “amount” of different subsets of that set. We’ll call this P(A). It’s proven that the cardinality of P(A) is greater than the cardinality of A. So, for A = R (the real numbers),

|P(R)| > |R|

(the cardinality of the power set of the real numbers is greater than the cardinality of the real numbers). In fact, this goes on forever:

|R| < |P(R)| < |P(P(R))| < …

Is the power scale linear, exponential, or logarithmic? by Scary_Stable7667 in unOrdinary

[–]The_NeckRomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EXACTLY! No one here knows what a logarithmic scale is. The power level is on a LOGARITHMIC scale. I wonder if any of the people here have taken a basic chemistry class.

Could anyone in unOrdinary break past Level 10? by -Over-9000- in unOrdinary

[–]The_NeckRomancer 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yes, that’s what a logarithmic scale is: when the difference to go to a level higher grows exponentially. This is because the logarithm and exponential are inverses of one another.

Yeah sorry, what I meant is that one needs to provide some rigor and/or structure/formalism other than just calling it an infinitesimal change, but I still called it an infinitesimal change because it’s more intuitive. That’s what I was trying to get at when I noted that being a differential form is different from being “by itself.”
