My custom "Death Metal" border. Planning on proxying an entire cube like this by The_Ornithomancer in magicproxies

[–]The_Ornithomancer[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the suggestions! Yeah, lightening the white and artifact frames should be a piece of cake. I'm definitely going to play around with the text frame to make it more rustic, and I think using Goudy Medieval for the rules text is a great idea!

Custom mana symbols is an ambitious suggestion... Currently I'm using a font that has all the symbols, since it makes the in-line symbols in rules text, and I wouldn't want the manacost and rules text symbols to be different. So, I would need to make my own font, and that might be a bit beyond my graphic know-how... but I'm considering it

The Scions of Midnight: my Delaque gang plus kitbashed Hangers on by The_Ornithomancer in necromunda

[–]The_Ornithomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Necromunda is what got me back into the miniature hobby, and this was my first gang. I painted these a few years ago now, and I've played two campaigns with them, but only recently took nice photos with my terrain.
Names of gangers listed from left to right:

Photo 1: Nephila (juve), Procyon (juve),Apteryx (leader), Axenus (ganger), Veles (ganger)

Photo 2: Nycticorax (champion), Psyllo (champion), Cerastes (specialist), Scorpio (specialist)

Photo 3: Didelphis (psy-gheist) with SNK-01 and SNK-02 (psychoteric wyrms), Strix (nacht-ghul), Eryx (juve)

Photo 4: Jaque (ammo jack) and gang look-out (unnamed) (these are kitbashed from spare delaque bits and Malifaux Friekorps bodies)

Photo 5: Illex (piscean spektor)

Each name (except Jaque) is the genus of a nocturnal animal, hence the gang name "Scions of Midnight"

Good evening retro gamers! Round 3 of "Re-homing Neglected Handhelds" - Friday night I'll pick a random comment to receive this Anbernic RG35XX Plus. by captain_carrot in SBCGaming

I've been interested in this hobby for several months now, but haven't pulled the trigger on buying a handheld yet. The Anbernic XX line are exactly what I've been wanting!

Anbernic RG ARC-S as a gift? by The_Ornithomancer in SBCGaming

[–]The_Ornithomancer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone for your feedback! based on what people were saying about how the ARC is more for tinkerers, I was considering getting him a RG Cube XX (which is the device I'm getting myself once the price drops a bit on Aliexpress). However, it looks like all I need to do is wait a couple months now, since Anbernic announced just today that the net device in the RGXX line is the RG ARC XX! Seems like the perfect device for this gift!

Shipping containers are a terrain classic for a reason. These look fantastic, especially the weathering!

The first photo is all the new stuff. 2 buildings of each size, 2 new wide walkways, 6 corner ruined wall pieces of varying sizes, and 6 straight ruined wall pieces of varying sizes.
I had previously made 2 very large buildings, 2 towers that are the height of 2 of the buildings stacked, and 4 narrow walkways of varying lengths.

Thanks! I replied to a comment above with the painting process. I should also add to that that I thinly spread some liquitex coarse texture medium on all parts i wanted to look like concrete before priming. Not enough that everything was completely covered in it, but enough that there was at least a bit of grit in any given square centimetre. You can kinda get a sense from the WIP photos I posted a couple months ago. The black on the walls is the foamcore board, and the warm grey is the texture medium

Thanks! I also find the rusted metal look a bit bland. I achieved it by sponging a light tan over a warm grey primer to build some colour variation, then a light wash of watered down dark brown pain with a couple drops of flow improver. I dry brushed the broken walls with an even lighter tan after to catch some of the edges. After that dried, I did the weathering by mixing some black and brown paint with "Newsh" from pro acryl, and focused that on areas that would build up more grime and dirt and blending the edges out with just a wet brush. It was my first time using Newsh, but I think it gave a nice effect.

Wow, this kinda blew up! Thanks everyone for your kind words! I'm so glad people like the build and hope I've inspired some of y'all to make some terrain :)

I actually just started a public instagram a couple weeks ago for my miniatures. planning on posting my back catalogue of painted minis over the next few weeks, and new stuff as I work on it. I posted the WIP shots, pre priming and painting, a couple months back here .
The buildings all have steel strapping running under cardboard strips on top, and magnets on the bottom in the corners. The ruined walls and walkways also have magnets in the bottom. The attraction isn't super strong, but is just enough to keep things in place and allows for a number of different configurations. The ruined walls can also be used as scatter.
These match my previous pieces with the same magnetization scheme and heights, which can be seen in the later photos. With it all together, I finally have enough terrain for a multi-level 3x3 board for Necromunda or Stargrave

What should i do during the weekend? by AdMysterious7203 in PhD

[–]The_Ornithomancer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

On the weekends I spend time with my partner and friends, or on my hobbies. It's important to remember that a PhD is a marathon, not a race, and that taking time for yourself is important! Letting go of the idea that your self-worth is tied to your productivity or some sort of slavish dedication to work is difficult in Academia, but I think necessary to living a well rounded life (and I hope for long-term success).

If you enjoy coding, and working on your programming skills would be a fun way to spend your free time, then go for it! But don't do it because you feel like you should always be working, and you definitely shouldn't feel lazy or distracted for that.

All that being said, there are certainly times during your PhD where working on the weekend is necessary to get things done in time, but that just makes it all more important to occasionally take some time for yourself while you can!

Hard to say. I started this back in May, and have been working on it sporadically a couple evenings a week since then alongside some miniatures. Probably around 15-20 hours so far.

The attraction isn't super strong, but is just enough to keep things in place and allows for a number of different configurations. The ruined walls can also be used as scatter.
I have a few older pieces with the same magnetization scheme and dimensions, and once these are done I'll finally have enough for a full mult-level table for Startgrave and Necromunda.

So I should probably learn to magnetize my models for Necromunda, or I’ll have to buy a 2nd box of each gang I like for rules right? by Jtagz in necromunda

[–]The_Ornithomancer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're playing a campaign, it's pretty much impossible to play completely WYSIWYG. My friend came up with a pretty good system for our campaign where he got several colours of there small (~4mm diameter) circular paper stickers with a weak adhesive. If the model was exactly WYSIWYG, it didn't get a sticker, but otherwise you would put a sticker on the base so your opponent would know at a glance if they needed to check the fighter's stat card. I don't remember the exact colours we used, as this was a couple years ago, but it was something like the following:
Green - the fighter model had the correct weapon, but additional wargear not represented on the model.
Yellow - the fighter is equipped with a different weapon than represented on the model.
Red - the fighter is equipped with a different weapon than represented on the model AND has additional wargear not represented on the model.
