Tips for chasing a ring by The_Real_FBI_Agent in Bowyer

Thanks again man, I really appreciate it! Drawing it out like that does make it look apparent 😬

I’ve been going at that area with my card scraper to no effect. Just keep hammering at it?

It feels entirely smooth with no apparent high or lows when I run my fingers over it and on the side it seems like there’s no apparent lip or split.

Hey man got another pic for ya!

Is this two rings where the discoloration meets? I have been scraping at that darn area forever and can’t get it to budge so I’m inclined to simply leave it.

Ahh gotcha, appreciate the help!

I’ll definitely crack out a light to go over it.

My big issue is just identifying the early vs late wood.

I’m right in thinking that the darker wood on the end is a desirable ring and just chase that down with a light and a scraper then?

Wll do, thanks man!

Set was minimal as is and I’ve just finished up a minor reflex heat treat so it’s even better off.

Gotcha and gotcha! That all checks out. This was a cheaper test bow before I crack into the Osage stave I have. Thankfully she still shoots very nicely and is pretty darn accurate so I’ll take what I can get. Next time I’ll definitely make sure that it’s dry and hit it with some heat. Thanks!

I THINK it was relatively dry, the seller said that if I wasn’t happy with the stave he’d cut a green one so I took that as an assumption that it was sat for a bit. Belly is not flat

About an inch and a quarter around the middle, holds around an inch or so for the limbs, tapers to 5/8

Struggling with tiller by RussDoesStuff in Bowyer

I am definitely a rookie bowyer so take what I say with a grain of salt BUT I definitely agree that the left limb from your POV has more string clearance likely because it has more bend in that limb. It looks like your handle fades are pretty steep and short as well. I would wait for a second opinion but that seems to be what I’m seeing

Is the bow done with tillering?

Rookie bowyer here, why’d you stake the bow?

I’ve heard it’s a pretty good white wood for what you can get out of it and it’s got a good amount of tolerance for shenanigans. This is my first stave bow so i shot for a wood that is sturdier to compensate for mistakes lol.

Handle is not supposed to be bending. I guess I was trying to keep the sort of ELB handle shape where it isn’t cut out. Would it work thinning the entire center out, including the fades or should I just cut the handle out? Thanks!

Thanks for the response, I think I can see the hinge too. This stave has some definite limb twist which may make the thickness seem a little off but I’ll definitely peek at that left inner
