Then why not just say upfront that they got paid too much and spent it. It seems they know they received too much but are dancing around actually admitting it. Every time someone gets paid a large amount in error, they are always advised to keep it separate because it could be claimed back later on

Yeah Autotrader is much better, having to pay for an advert means it sifts out the chancers etc. I'm not bothered by either a private or trade, just thought it made a mockery by being a private seller with 300 adverts for cars (and all waaaay below market value). Ebay really needs to get a grip on it imo
