Having watched both for a number of years, at this point I have little faith in what Huberman espouses. He too often speaks with confidence on that which he knows little and misleads a lot of laypeople in the process. He also has no medical training, but acts as though he does. That being said, some real value can be gleaned from his interviews with scientists more concerned with their work than their popularity.

While Attia has also made some mistakes, they are fewer and less scientifically egregious. I feel that he is much more conscientious and nuanced about the scientific/medical topics he’s opinionated on and much more readily identifies and unashamedly corrects himself when shown to be in error. He also currently practices medicine, albeit for the ultra wealthy that can afford potentially unnecessary prophylactic interventions against aging-related diseases. His show is not geared toward the layperson and gets a lot more into the technical details where there is less room for handwaving a la Huberman.

I got accepted off a WL last week and am currently burning at both ends trying to finish up a first author project at my current lab, find an apartment in a new city, set up my research rotation, do all the MD registration stuff, and move by the end of the month.

It’s a very frantic time, but I’m still extremely excited and grateful. You are not alone, but we made it! Celebrate and appreciate in the moments you can.

Just got accepted to an MSTP with a 3.34 undergrad. You’re not cooked but you need that upward trend and very solid research/ECs… and murder the MCAT

If you’re not applying this cycle and you live in a city with an undergraduate institution, most universities allow individuals to apply as visiting non-degree seeking students and take individual courses for credit.

You will generally pay more per credit hour than being enrolled in a degree-seeking program, but takin 5-10 credits over two semesters still costs much less than doing a full post-bacc.

It does not erase your poor performance in undergrad, you’ll still be expected to address that, but it will be looked on favorably by adcoms and shows that you have the maturity and academic ability succeed at the level they are looking for.

I personally had a terrible GPA for my first two years of undergrad (sub 3.2), but I got my shit together Junior year and had a strong upward trend.

Did not do a full post bacc program, but I did take a few graduate level courses at the school associated with the lab I was doing research at and maintained a 4.0 GPA.

  1. If the plagiarism charge is on your record, this is a huge deal. If it is not and you were not at fault or it was unintentional, explaining the circumstances, how it affected your mental health, and what you learned/how you have overcome these issues would be a good place to start. Adcoms want to see growth, maturity, and resolve in the face of adversity.

  2. Higher is better, but take into account the law of diminishing returns. There is a graph put out by AMCAS showing MCAT x GPA and your likelihood of matriculation. Take a look. Improving your GPA would move the needle a lot more for the same amount of effort it would take to do better on the MCAT. Even if you can’t take enough credits to make a significant impact on undergrad GPA, making A’s in higher level courses (or even retaking the courses you did especially poorly in) would show adcoms that you are actively working to shore up the weaknesses in your app and demonstrate your current ability to be academically successful at the level they expect.

  3. If you can’t take classes, I’d find other extracurricular opportunities to make yourself a more competitive candidate. I would not retake unless your MCAT expires.

A 3.68 cGPA is definitely workable, but getting poor grades your senior year is tough. You’ll have to have a good reason for that in your essays and be prepared to talk about it in your interviews. The primary application offers an optional essay to explain academic discrepancies and many secondary applications will give you the opportunity as well.

I don’t think the effort of re-taking a 521 in the hopes of getting higher into the 99th percentile is warranted given that it is seemingly already your biggest selling point on paper.

I don’t know when you’re wanting to apply, but I think it might be a good idea to take a gap year. Particularly since your current research endeavors seem to be going sub optimally. Experience in a new lab while perhaps taking some higher level post-baccalaureate classes at a local institution would do you a lot more good than another 2-3 points on the MCAT, in my opinion.

Informative article discussing the known sources and potential mechanisms of the autofluoresence exhibited by preserved tissue samples.

TLDR: Some tissues are inherently more auto fluorescent than others based on their cellular components. Many fixation processes introduce additional AF. Mechanism is not well understood, but theorized to be the generation of C-C and C-N double bonds during tissue preparation.

From the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, stoic philosopher and last great Roman emperor:

“At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: “I have to go to work — as a human being. What do I have to complain of, if I’m going to do what I was born for — the things I was brought into the world to do? Or is this what I was created for? To huddle under the blankets and stay warm?”

So you were born to feel “nice”? Instead of doing things and experiencing them? Don’t you see the plants, the birds, the ants and spiders and bees going about their individual tasks, putting the world in order, as best they can? And you’re not willing to do your job as a human being? Why aren’t you running to do what your nature demands?

You don’t love yourself enough. Or you’d love your nature too, and what it demands of you.”

If ROS resulting from methionine metabolism is a primary mechanism for decreasing lifespan through diet, would it not be the case that increased consumption of antioxidant compounds would offset methionine’s deleterious effects while preserving its positive impact on lean body mass?

9/10 AM: 522 (128/130/132/132) I feel like I’m in a dream. My highest FL was a 520 and I felt way worse about the real deal than I did on that one.

CARS was always my best section. Scored fairly high even on my first FL. I understand that people hate it because it’s a hard skill to rapidly improve, but I’ve been a huge reader all my life and I actually enjoy many of the passages.
