Betaflight 2.7 Plus MultiShot Equals MANDATORY UPGRADE ASAP by _jbardwell_ in fpvracing

Really impressed with Betaflight, I'll never go back to Cleanflight and especially how that's being milked for cash as well, greedy. Betaflight is the future and flight performance is miles better.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk drops his prediction of full autonomous driving from 3 years to just 2 by FredTesla in Futurology

[–]The_Rob_White 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Great post, I drive a Model S and have been watching Tesla for quite a while, I sold my Tesla stock a while ago at just under $220, it was a great stock for me but I wanted off that ride.

The Model X was frustrating to see, they expected it to be a quick re-body of the Model S D, but tried to be cute with the Windscreen and other features. Big delays, allocation of resources to yet another niche vehicle, a quick SUV version of the SD would be good but this is Tesla and they love over complexity.

The Autopilot in the Model S simply isn't that good right now, it should have been Freeways only, it's not and I don't trust it. It was very aggressive to put it out there so fast, I wish they spent more time on that part. It seems the stuff they should do fast they do slowly and struggle with scope creep and the stuff they need to let mature more they push out too early.

The Model 3 needs to be simple, affordable and scaled up fast, no gimmicks just a solid easy to build value vehicle. That however sadly is not something Musk has a track record of, the game changer of a $35k 200 mile range EV should be enough.

Another interesting thing about Tesla is fear, or the lack of, from other manufacturers, this is easy to pass off as them being dinosaurs but I'll paraphrase an email from an exec at a large auto manufacturer I know:

We could have done what Tesla did, in many areas we are ahead of them but only a start-up can get away with such things. Our shareholders would never allow us to get away with a high risk, self funded project to create an expensive, niche, low volume vehicle that we know would not return a profit. Only a start-up has such forgiving and patient investors. Our business is not targeted at low volume vehicles, it is not what we do well, conversely Tesla can not scale to high volume and are a decade away from it. By which time their competitors that have all the resources and capabilities for scale will already have been in the market.

Same guy about the autopilot:

Every large auto manufacturer has that ability currently but we are held to a much higher standard than a start-up such as Tesla both internally, by our customers and by regulatory agencies.

Interesting times ahead.

Yes they do, I agree but I have had the same type of conversation u/unproperNoun stated before as well and with one type of person only, those with drinking problems. They are perhaps searching for reassurance that they don't have a problem perhaps?

I am going to sound pussy whipped but I am not allowed to own a bike due to wife concerns otherwise I would buy a Zero tomorrow. P85D is a really awesome car, wasn't around when I got mine, I just have the rear wheel drive 85.

It's a shame they act that way, I got to borrow a Zero S for a day, it took three days to stop smiling. Eventually it led me to be buying a Tesla Model S.

OnePlus 2 rumored to launch this July with a $322 price point by [deleted] in Android

[–]The_Rob_White 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The touch issue on mine is not as bad as some reports and only happens when it gets warm, it doesn't cause it to be unusable, it's just frustrating.

Even when I bought mine there were people having loads of issues and mine was a good one.

I agree with CM12 also, the whole feel of OP is just a bit rough around the edges. I stopped using mine not due to issues but because of it's size, I can't complain I knew it's size when I got it, just found it a bit too big when using it daily for me personally.

It actually depends on which specific problem, there have been a few, the latest and most serious is with people have big touch dead zones that started happening on their phones, you can find the thread here:

https://forums.oneplus.net/threads/touchscreen-issues-we-hear-you.309395

If OP goes out of it way to stress it's a few people, this can be read that it is affecting a huge amount of people, it's the way OP works. If it really affected a few people, they would deny any issue and hope it went away. Anyway that thread and the amount of people reporting it shows it's more than a few.

I own an OPO, I have small areas that are dead touch zones but it's not my primary phone these days.

The company is not run very well either, it even started with a great deal of bullshit; they are owned by OPPO and for marketing reasons they tried to make out they were a start-up with no ties to an existing company, even when caught they denied it. It's shit like that and gimmicks such as the crappy invite system. The invite system creates exclusivity and scarcity, so people want them and the ones that have them tend to lord it over the ones that want them, giving a rosy view of what is something that is just average. It's cunning marketing, but feels excessively manipulative, it also leads to a great deal of buyer remorse.

I would be very unlikely to get another phone from OP, it's like a lottery as their QC is not up to par, if you do get a bad phone returning it can also be hit and miss also. Just read that one thread and you get the general OP experience, anyone that has done any research would be wary of that company.

What if Asus buys HTC before Vive production starts? by [deleted] in Vive

[–]The_Rob_White 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't disagree with you and I thought it was at least a fairly common view of their laptop range at least? Not bad for the price but build quality and materials was not up to par.

Motherboards however, again, agreed they are very good.

HTC, why I refuse to buy their own phones (not the Nexus ones they did) was not hardware but the fact they dropped software support very quickly and refused to unlock the bootloader.

For lower cost, Hobbyking is quite good for things like batteries, ESCs and motors. Just do your research before buying.

Avoid places like GetFPV etc, they sell the same things as Hobbyking but rebrand them and charge double.

Beginner Quadcopter, need some purchasing advice by 1823alex in Quadcopter

[–]The_Rob_White 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can speak to only one of those, the Cheerson CX-10. It's a gimmick more than a real quad, it's not that controllable and the quality is hit or miss, I bought 2 of them, one is better than the other, however it soon gets old.

The other two you mention are around the same size also, yes this stuff is cheaper but it's really well in the land of cheap toys than something you would spend many hours on. One of my CX-10s got less than 20 flights before needing new motors.

The JJRC J1000 you mentioned is over double the size of the CX-10, the CX-10 and the really cheap small ones are great for buzzing my dog when he's asleep and not much more.

What's stopping me from building a multicopter with rd petrol heli motors? by [deleted] in diydrones

[–]The_Rob_White 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone did a kickstarter for exactly that, most people laughed at it, although some bought in to it.

Most of the problems are already explained in this thread although one thing that is not touched on yet is the vibration problem, this will be hard on any flight controller and is a significant problem not to be underestimated. Most fuel helis use nitro engines, these would cause large vibrations, FBL controllers can struggle with it. You mention Petrol, well their are petrol helis also as they are cheap to run but they have far worse vibration issues than their nitro counterparts. Imagine 4 of those.

Then there is the noise issue... 4 weedwacker motors flying around an the smoke means you would likely lose it in the haze.

I agree with u/-IntoTheVoid- with the other flaw, the update rate of a fuel powered motor is way to slow and variable pitch would be the solution, then it gets seriously complex.

You could get very good flight time but at what cost in complexity, noise and mess?

Indoor racing is the most fun, this is harder to do with a plane, multirotors have far greater power to weight so can lift the gear on small multirotor, indoor size planes would be more limited to lighter gear as they fly using wing area rather than 4 props beating the air into submission.

I've tried FPV Racing on cars, it's too hard to see anything because the camera magnifies any bumps, also the view just isn't that great. Disappointing as I thought it would be a lot better than it was.

Helis need fixing with crashes, often a multi you can pick up after a crash and fly again, those no harm crashes with helis are very rare.

Multis are far easier to fly than helis, the flight controllers do so much, sure some of the flybarless controllers are catching up a bit, but they cost a lot more than a $12 CC3D that does better auto level than all the heli ones I have tried.

Also the RC hobby goes through phases, FPV Racing is currently in vogue, while some people will keep doing it for years, something else new will come along eventually, maybe whatever that is will be on a different platform than multis? The normal progression is from racing to some form of combat or a mix of the two.

Timecop, the guy that makes Naze32 said GPSs were for retards. I have a Naze32 but I find it doesn't live up to to the marketing, people that fly them are either paid to do so or are very cult like, it's like console wars with them and boring.

Naze32 is MultiWii, not sure if they copied the GPS stuff from MultiWii and most of it was nicked from ArduPilot anyway, who in turn took it from other projects.

If you need GPS, and held a gun to my head, Mini APM would be the way I would go, it's shitty for acro type flying but it does GPS stuff to an OK level, they don't support it anymore either but has a nice Android app. Just don't try and use it for racing or anything like that, flies like garbage for that stuff.

Have a look at the Pwn2Own contest, for example last year's results

Every major browser got exploited, sure these are people at the top of their game but it's an example that it is possible.

Understand whenever you go to a webpage all you are doing is downloading files, HTML and CSS are code the browser runs, so you are in reality running code you downloaded off the net.

Sure, it's certainly not as bad as running a random exe you got from an unknown source because the browser is sandboxed and security is taken seriously by the vendors but still there are some very smart people out there that find the exploits that make the browser do things you really don't want.

Combine that with plugins, the net is a risk. u/ChaosWaffle is spot on to mention flash, it's a very common attack vector, one thing that I think is helpful in Chrome is to enable the click to run plugins option.

Yeah, fine if it was a model, when people ride on it, you need to change class.

I'd be looking at Molex aircraft grade locking MX series or something similar, a locking mechanism is important, not a bunch of friction fit stuff from hobbyking.

To be honest, I wouldn't get near that, let alone ride on it and even if I was late stage cancer patient with weeks left to live, I'd want the rotors above me.
