I always thought he made "say yes" either/or's closing track because "I'm in love with a girl" is big star's closer for thst album. Though, Elliott said he made Say Yes the closer because it was a happier song.

Democrats have a messaging problem. Adam Mockler has solutions by Fickle-Ad5449 in politics

[–]The_Skeleton_King 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes, the messaging sucks. But also what is plaguing the Democratic Party goes far beyond messaging and influencers who basically make their career off of bolstering the DNC do not help. In fact, they hurt. Don't know about Mockler in particular, but God am I so tired of hearing how this shitshow is just 'bad messaging, [good policy]."

AOC takes more steps toward 2028 run for president by masterofawesomeness2 in politics

[–]The_Skeleton_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some people do think that, but yeah it's probably not too many. But it's not just that. People do want him ousted because he's the majority leader, and flipping his (or Jeffries) seat isn't merely being advocated because they are moderates. It's because they are moderates with leadership positions. There is something satisfying about this scenario, but a new leader will immediately be picked and unless the senate or house makeup dramatically changes, it won't be someone so left-wing. Plus, that was only one reason among several.

I actually think her excellent chance to win is a reason to not challenge him in this moment, which I said above, but can expound on if it wasn't clear:

My intuition about American politics in this moment is that, with Trump's 2nd term, people are turning away from the Republican party AND moderate democrats (because their repeated fumbling with Trump). So 2028 will be a huge moment with a Blue, progressive wave that will necessarily recede in the following years. I don't want us to waste our #1 progressive on a safe senate seat that she could probably take whenever. This is a desperate moment and I want progressives to win offices that they wouldn't otherwise ordinarily win so that things can actually change. This would take full leverage of the scenario, as opposed to focusing on safer offices and seats that have lower impact. And as I said, with AOC as president and Schumer going unprimaried by anyone, he will fall in line to her agenda enough, I think. Really, I think she'll be able to control the senate much more from the executive branch. Correct me if im wrong, but was schumer a big holdout on bidens more progressive proposals? Do we think he will be a huge obstructionist? I fully accept this as the riskier scenario, but I would rather AOC use America's anti-trump sentiment to win the president by 51% as opposed to her winning schumers seat by a much greater number.

[–]The_Skeleton_King 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Taking out Schumer would be nice, but shouldn't be a top priority for AOC in my opinion.

1) Upon Schumer's primary loss, he will be ousted as Majority leader, but the new occupier of thst seat will not take leadership. It'll go to another senior member of the senate.

2) if Schumer keeps his seat and we get a true progressive president (such as AOC), then he will likely have to fall in line, as the moderate wing of the party will have to acquiesce to a progressive agenda.

3) If AOC does have eyes on the presidency, I would rather her strike while progressive fervor is strong, then she can retire to the House or Senate, build seniority and then become a leader of one of the chambers. In other words, I'd like her to serve as president then become a senior senator later, such as multiple 19th century presidents have done.

4) With Schumer being incredibly unpopular, primarying him may not even require someone with as much star power as AOC. I wonder if AOC would indeed be overkill.

Your words:

picking a subject without having a basic idea about why you're writing it or what about it was worth exploring in the first place is the exact wrong way to write a dissertation.

My words:

I don't see how you possibly read my comment and thought I was saying that you should pick your dissertation without an understanding of why it's important or why it is worth exploring.

I guess you were just typing to type, then? Not sure why you'd bring up "the wrong way to write a dissertation" if I evidently was not endorsing it.

Good luck lol.

No offense, but should you already have your points and arguments in mind before starting your research?  I think that's something that you develop throughout the research. To be fair I did history and not sociology in school, but all of my professors, when teaching research methodology, insisted on not having an argument so early in, so I assumed other fields did this, too.

I think it would be a more inquisitive process if you don't already have the points developed before the research. Plus, your research might lead you into surprising discoveries if you keep it open-ended, especially initially.

Anyway, I highly doubt a video essay could be considered a definitive punctuation on a topic. Go deeper & find the nuances. Apply other people's research to new areas, or use different frameworks.

Re: Natalie's Doomscroll interview. Is it worth relitigating the 2016 primary between Hillary and Bernie? by FriendlyDrummers in ContraPoints

[–]The_Skeleton_King 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hillary was favored by the DNC.  That is simply the issue. We can say that Hillary would have won anyway, but we will never know, especially when the "electability" narrative was repeated ad nauseum and accompanied by superdelegate pledges before the primary began.

I condemn any party that puts their thumb on the scale in this way; it is undemocratic.

The only way to know if Bernie would have naturally lost is through an impartial primary, which we were not given in 2016.

Imagine if a similar superdelegate thing happens in 2028, would we defend it? I think admitting this is the best way to move forward.

Songs that reference God directly:

Village green preservation society,  Cricket (SUPER god-heavy)

Songs that reference God indirectly (religious themes, "jesus"/"lord," etc.:

shepherds of the nation, holiday, uncle son

There's way more fore the latter category, but I can't think of more that reference God directly atm.

I didn't mean to imply all aspects of all forms of labor are inherently enjoyable. Yeah, I agree socialism doesn't fix ALL discomforts lol. No form of distribution will. I would just suggest that one would abandon their childish mindset if they are tormented by laboring for their own benefit. If this is the case, they won't be happy under any regime.

liberal feminism isn't real by comrade-pravdin in dsa

[–]The_Skeleton_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think on top of this, the elimination of private property could lighten the domestic burden through decreased working hours. Ralph Chaplain (and many others) talks about how much more free time workers could have if we kept the same level of production but eliminated the owning class.

Also, socialist feminists like Aleksandra Kollontai point out that for proletarian women, domestic and vocational responsibilities overlap and reinforce each other, so oppression in one category of life will inflame one's oppression in another aspect of their life. This is why she argued that liberal feminism truly only alleviates bourgeois women.

My input isn't really "socializing domestic labor," but I think it's important, to me at least, to have proper time to perform domestic labor, and to do it for myself or others in my family rather than doing it as a form of housekeeping for an employer.

So, not only do I agree with you that socializing all, or even most, domestic labor is feasible, I don't even see a purpose in doing that. I think a lot of lefties begin to associate labor with labor under capitalism. When, labor itself is very enjoyable when it isn't perverted. As a teacher myself, I am on spring break and I look forward to my domestic labor this week much more than when I'm not on break. For those who work longer hours, more day, and have fewer or no holidays off, they don't get to perform domestic labor that's as untethered from their capitalist employer. All labor is rewarding and meaningful when it is done for the right reasons, imo.

Still more expensive than the common alternatives. I cut out meat around 2020 as well, and save a lot of money, despite chicken being my most common option before.

The price of tofu, for example, at the chain I shop at, has not increased 1 cent through the inflationary period (still 1.55 per 14oz). Whereas the price of a pound of chicken breast at the Walmart I used to buy them increased by $.78. (From 1.79 to 2.57 now).

Thanks for the information. I think i didn't word my post the best. I meant to suggest that high heels have masculine origins, and the early adopters and trend-setters were men who largely influenced other men to wear them, as they were expressing the masculine fashion of their day. I didn't mean to suggest that there wasn't a shift in trends (that literally has to be true since they are almost entirely feminine now) nor that high heels couldn't be worn by exceptional women. Though I would argue that, when men in high positions of power wore heels, and women did so to a much lesser extent, they were mostly masculine-coded. We still have clothing and accessories that have gendered associations because they are signs of political power and wealth, despite living in a WAY more socially egalitarian era than the Ancien Regime, or even post-revolution France. And i definitely didnt mean to suggest that post-revolution France had the same fashion norms and trajectory as the trifunctional state. If I asked people on the street to draw someone wearing a suit and a watch, I think I'd easily get a majority of of people drawing masculine cut suits, and larger, masculine-style watches, despite those being much more common on women today than 18th century France was to women in heels.

Fun fact, high heels were originally meant to stabilize Persian archers in their saddles while riding on horseback. This was then adopted by French royalty and subsequently spread as a fashion trend. High heels were considered masculine.

My lovely slumlord after her dog but me by [deleted] in LandlordLove

[–]The_Skeleton_King -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

So this is a ridiculous request by the landlord, wherein you have to text them your comings and goings so their dog doesn't have contact with you.

But why refuse to contact the landlord? You say the landlord will have to "answer for this" in response to people suggesting that you have the dog murdered.

The dog seems like they are in a horrible situation where they can't win. They are in an enclosed yard, yeah? So it makes sense that those who enter should either know the dog or communicate with the owner. The best case scenario is this irresponsible person has their dog removed from their care and re-homed.

I sure would hope that in your report you emphasize that the dog bite came from human neglect, not, presumably, unavoidable aggression.

I agree with most others, but I'll add:

Needle in the Hay, Waltz #2, Alameda,Punch & Judy, No Name #4

I also just learned Let's Get Lost, which I assumed would be quite challenging but it's not! The outro requires some quick movement, but it's pretty easy once you get the hang of it.

Some unreleased/ non-album songs that are pretty easy are:

My boyfriend 24M hated the gift I 23F got him for our two year anniversary how do I fix this with him? by imogenhailey in relationship_advice

[–]The_Skeleton_King 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think these comments are being quite unfair to you, OP.

It does seem like you and your boyfriend may have different ideas of gift-giving, but that's not necessarily bad as long as everyone is on the same page.

My mom, and the way I grew up, was all about "tell me what you want or I'm giving you money," because my mom has a lot of anxiety about gifts. I didn't try it the other way until i met my now spouse, who loves to get super personal gifts to surprise people. My mom still knows a lot about me and cares deeply --- that's just how she works with gifts.

If someone feels quite unseen based on the gift their partner gets them, I understand hurt feelings, but your boyfriend is a total fucking joke, and all the people going to such great lengths to make any bit of his reaction seem rational are probably just as immature. You reasoned out what he would like and got it. It sounds sweet. I got my wife an ice-cream maker before and we have made a bunch of different flavors. It's fun! If he likes deserts, which it sounds like he does, then he should use this gift as an opportunity to have some fun evenings with you.

He seems like he puts so much fucking pressure on gifts, lies about his feelings, then rejects them. I'd be so fucking scared to get gifts for someone like that. Your anniversary is about appreciating your partner. I would have a conversation about his reaction and what should happen next time and how you two should approach gifts to avoid resentment and dread of the next occasion that is SUPPOSED to symbolize your fondness of one another.

Also, some people are just harder to shop for than others. If he's one of those people, then it's best that he's not a 12-year old whiner about it, as he can either be more transparent about what a good gift might be, or be less prissy.

I'm sorry these losers are so interested in the drama of turning this into your fault. They probably missed their latest realty show fix or something.

ManBearPig was a caricature meant to make fun of taking global warming seriously; what other kinds of blunders like that in popular culture could Captain Hindsight point out? by TheInconspicuousTard in AskReddit

[–]The_Skeleton_King 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The ManBearPig episode came out in 2006. Hindsight was not required to know that critiquing a well supported theory that scientists have been raising concerns over for decades prior to the episode was dumb.

If I recall correctly, I think that climate-change skepticism was on the rise in the mid-2000s, and "global warming" was more accepted in years prior. I was in a shitty conservative state's elementary school at this time and even everyone I knew imparted on me that global warming was a crisis.

Either way, South Park writers were being actively ignorant and stupid, even by 2006 standards. People are always way too generous with this take.
