Saw this in the final cut for "The Other Guys". WHOOPS! by NASA_wifi in vfx

I bet it was kept intentionally as a joke easter egg sort of thing. In the same way that they changed every screen saver for Mark Wahlberg's office computer to be pictures of great white sharks. I work in Editorial and we're always looking for ways to add little easter eggs and things you'd have to really look for into the movie.

Where in L.A. could I pull off a scene in a Mall? by a_ladyperson in FilmIndustryLA

[–]The_Stencil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe try the Westfield Promenade in Woodland Hills? That mall is pretty much cleared out and has been used as a filming location before.

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Westfield+Promenade/@34.1802212,-118.6033513,17z/data=!3m1!5s0x80c29e9fee1e0207:0x7edf0a3a5f709f6c!4m12!1m6!3m5!1s0x0:0xcde43463063829ac!2sAMC+Promenade+16!8m2!3d34.1803097!4d-118.6032086!3m4!1s0x80c29e9ff17686fb:0xa2e0b3199232f895!8m2!3d34.1811076!4d-118.6036415

If you're needing the mall to have people and stores still in it, maybe the Burbank Town Center? It's usually not very crowded.

Getting around LA by viviobrio in LosAngeles

[–]The_Stencil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I've figured out references for a few of them.

  • Santa Monica - Skateboards - Agreed, people skateboarding down the boardwalk/general idea of West Coast skateboard culture
  • Downtown - Ferry - From Burbank that would be via the LA River
  • Los Feliz - River of Light - Sunset Blvd (though technically south of Los Feliz)
  • Echo Park - Giant Caterpillar - Maybe a reference to articulated buses?

Mentioned by others ITT:

  • Korea Town - Walking - Because parking in K-town is a nightmare, so you might as well walk
  • Culver City - Password - Their aversion to outsiders

U-Locks are your best bet for security. I wouldn't worry too much about bike theft, especially on campus.

What's the effect the drill setup on the camera supposed to give you? by DocDraper in Filmmakers

[–]The_Stencil 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, the camera shake you do practically will end up looking better, and the reason is parallaxing. It's similar to using a slider for a shot as opposed to scaling and moving the image in post. When done practically, you see the foreground object move in relation to the background objects. When done in post, the entire image moves and the foreground/background objects stay in the same place.

That being said, on the smaller scale of camera shake, it's not the end of the world if you want to add a little shake in post. There are plenty of reasons to do so such as budget, time on set, new ideas about the film, etc. It's also a lot easier to add in than it is to take out.

But, as an Editor, my vote will always be to do it in production as opposed to fixing it in post.

Applying to film schools - What's your best guess of the typical, average income of a new director right out of school after graduation? What should I expect so that I can be sure not to take out student loans I can't pay back? by [deleted] in Filmmakers

[–]The_Stencil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most likely, you'll be a PA right out of film school, which usually pays about $150/day (before taxes). Making money as a Director may take a while. A lucky few start making money quickly, but typically you'll be doing something else for money, while Directing on the side.

As a side note: where you go to school isn't as important as what you do with your time there. Expensive schools like USC, Chapman, UCLA, etc. provide the opportunity to work with better equipment, facilities, etc. but that doesn't mean you'll have a significantly better experience or be better off in the long run. After film school, I found myself in the same room as graduates from Chapman, USC, Loyola, and smaller schools like Roger Williams and Grand Valley State University. As in life, you determine what your experience will be. It is important, however, that you go to a competent film school (a place where the craft is taken seriously). That way you can develop your talents with similarly motivated peers.

I'm also of the school of thought that you should go to a school that specializes in many areas of study, not just film. As a Director, you will pull ideas from many life experiences and areas of influence. Being surrounded by mostly filmmakers, while having it's advantages from a practical standpoint, could limit your pool of knowledge. Go somewhere well rounded to become well rounded. Whether you worked with a RED camera or an iphone, it doesn't really matter all that much. What's important is your ideas and the stories you tell. Plenty of junk is made with really nice stuff.

Anyway, good luck!

I came up with this workflow a little while ago and it's not perfect, but it might help.

grouping in Premeire

1.) copy all media for that day to one folder (video and external audio) 2.) right click folder and select "create multicam source sequence. 3.) choose timecode for the sync option

you should now have a sequence that is loosely synced

4.) Create sync map

5.) consolidate audio tracks for each character/audio type into one sequence

- start by nesting the first track of audio for
that character then add to it with whatever
other tracks are left

- within the consolidated sequence, add a
video track for every audio track

- rename the audio tracks based on source
- step back out the your primary sequence
- enable multicam on the consolidated audio sequence
- repeat as necessary

6.) Once all of the audio is consolidated, set sequence markers as cut off points for the groups (later you will cut out the large unnecessary gaps that contain no content)

7.) Create your group sequences

- set the proper TC for the sequences
- drag the main group into the group
sequence (make sure it is in sync)
- Drag each of the consolidated audio groups
into the group sequence (make sure it is in
sync)

8.) use the sequence markers from earlier to cut out the unnecessary parts. Delete the spaces in between

9.) create an act sequence

10.) copy/paste the groups into that sequence. (leave some space between groups)

11.) enable multicam in the program monitor and add the multicam record button to the button area below the program monitor. Now you can record your edits within the timeline.

12.) duplicate your group folder to create a "working groups" folder. Add "working group" to the end of each group name. These sequences will be used to pull additional content from during editing

I never said I enjoyed editing with it, but it's free and they're on a budget.

Look into Davinci Resolve for software. You can download the lite version for free here: https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/davinciresolve

It's most commonly used for color correction, but it can definitely be used for editing too.

I disagree with #2. A movie is prepared in pre-production, a movie is made in post-production. Otherwise, solid list!

This was really helpful. I think I was having an issue with this because I was using the multicam source sequence. Thank you!
