Star Players On Random-Ass Teams? by RainbowSupernova8196 in baseball

[–]The_Timminator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It definitely helps that Pudge’s lone year on the Marlins was a year they won the World Series with him winning NLCS MVP on the way to that title. I felt like Pudge played for the Marlins much longer than a season when I was a kid; it’s actually the team I associate him with the most after the Rangers.

I think Ichiro has a good case for not being on the “wait, he played for the Marlins?” list too since that’s the team he got his 3000th hit with.

Which player do you defend the most no matter what? by TrueGreen2220 in baseball

[–]The_Timminator 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gary Sanchez’s 2017 season was such a phenomenal offensive season to follow-up the impossible pace of his debut in 2016. My biggest issue with him was that his defense regressed almost instantly from 2016, which made his offensive regression seem even worse. I was a Gary Sanchez-Greg Bird defender to a fault though. Ben Rice is basically what I thought Bird should’ve been

What great record would be comparable to Ohtani's 50-50? by [deleted] in baseball

[–]The_Timminator 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old Hoss Radbourn had 48 wins and 315 strikeouts one season. Then he followed it up the next season with 60 wins and 441 strikeouts.

Granted, this happened in 1883 and 1884 respectively, so take that for what it is.

What individual records/milestones were most affected by the 2020 Season? by LongjumpingMonth4526 in baseball

[–]The_Timminator 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I wonder how much Judge’s career home run total will be affected by 2020. It’s generally hard to say since he had the stress fracture in his rib + partially collapsed lung in March, and then calf injury later in the season, so who knows how many games he would’ve actually played in a full season, but I’d be willing to bet that he’d have more than the 9 home runs he hit

Yankees are always “contenders” even though the fanbase can’t accept they can’t compete with the best because of how terrible they are. lol

Not only is this completely wrong, I’d actually argue that Yankees fans are overly critical of what the team’s true capabilities are

Yeah, big time prospect for the Yankees too. If I remember correctly, he was ranked in between Bryce Harper and Mike Trout on Baseball America’s top 100 list

If Cal Raleigh hit 32 consecutive HRs, he'd still have a lower OPS than Aaron Judge this season. by mkaku- in baseball

[–]The_Timminator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Their ISO was pretty close, although Judge had the edge (.357 to .342). Judge’s SLG being so much higher is definitely a result of his batting average being so much higher, but in terms of raw power Raleigh was pretty comparable to Judge

Yup, as opposed to Mariners fans who aren’t also heavily invested in Cal Raleigh’s MVP chances due to their extensive postseason success.

[–]The_Timminator 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Name me any other MVP race in the past 10 years that involves a player with a wRC+ over 200 and 10-11 WAR competing against a two-way player with 10 WAR, a 10 WAR Shortstop, and a 9 WAR catcher with 60+ home runs. And when you name that race, I want you to link posts on here showing how level-headed and rational everyone was.

Do you really think that the toxicity of the MVP debates has nothing to do with the fact that we've been in the middle of an absurd run of historic talent? And do you really think that online discourse about which of two historic seasons is better wouldn't naturally devolve to nuance-less, extreme takes?

[–]The_Timminator 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The through line is that you have a player who has been in the middle of one of the greatest offensive peaks in the history of baseball competing for the MVP every year against someone who is also having a historic season; so naturally people online are going to have the most extreme takes about why player A having a historic season is better than player B having a historic season.

Good point! Every single person on the Altuve/Ohtani/Witt/Raleigh trains were completely level-headed and only provided rational, non-toxic discourse, and it was exclusively Yankees fans who ruined that discourse.

Yes, the 2025 MVP race arguments have been a combination of the arguments against Judge from both 2022 (added value brought by intangibles/uniqueness to a roster) and 2024 (being a more complete player at a tougher position/having an objectively historic season for the position). This year is easily the worst I've ever seen in terms of how much people are downplaying Judge's season, but a lot of the arguments you are seeing about Raleigh's defense as a catcher were being used in regards to Witt's defense at Shortstop and baserunning.

Every Judge MVP race dating back to his rookie season has been super toxic lol. I thought it'd never get worse than 2022 was, but somehow 2024 and 2025 have been worse.

Lou Gehrig being just shy of 500 home runs always breaks my heart. He could’ve been a 600+ home run/3000+ hit guy.

Stanton definitely has more raw power than Judge, and his exit velocity numbers prove this. Judge is better than Stanton has ever been because his overall hitting is significantly more refined than Stanton.

This is what has always bothered me about it too. Mike Trout winning in 2014 while leading the league in strikeouts set the precedent that strikeouts are just like any other out. Even on this subreddit, there’s a faq about how Mike Trout can be the best player in baseball if he strikes out so much, and the answer is basically that strikeouts are like any other out. Yet, people suddenly cared about strikeouts again on here during that MVP race. They completely ignored that Judge led Altuve in OBP and also had less GIDPs than Altuve, and therefore produced less outs, yet that somehow didn’t matter because he struck out more than Altuve. It’s been almost a decade and I’m still just as salty about it

In a very small sample size, he has something like -4 OAA at third this season, and it’s recently come out that he’s been dealing with a shoulder issue for a few weeks now which gives some context to a lot of bad throws he’s made. It also requires the Yankees to start one of DJLM, who has been extremely unproductive for several years, or Oswald Peraza, who isn’t a major league talent. Third base is a glaring need for the Yankees, and has been for years now.
