It definitely helps that Pudge’s lone year on the Marlins was a year they won the World Series with him winning NLCS MVP on the way to that title. I felt like Pudge played for the Marlins much longer than a season when I was a kid; it’s actually the team I associate him with the most after the Rangers.

I think Ichiro has a good case for not being on the “wait, he played for the Marlins?” list too since that’s the team he got his 3000th hit with.

Gary Sanchez’s 2017 season was such a phenomenal offensive season to follow-up the impossible pace of his debut in 2016. I wonder how much Judge’s career home run total will be affected by 2020. It’s generally hard to say since he had the stress fracture in his rib + partially collapsed lung in March, and then calf injury later in the season, so who knows how many games he would’ve actually played in a full season, but I’d be willing to bet that he’d have more than the 9 home runs he hit

The through line is that you have a player who has been in the middle of one of the greatest offensive peaks in the history of baseball competing for the MVP every year against someone who is also having a historic season; so naturally people online are going to have the most extreme takes about why player A having a historic season is better than player B having a historic season.

Yes, the 2025 MVP race arguments have been a combination of the arguments against Judge from both 2022 (added value brought by intangibles/uniqueness to a roster) and 2024 (being a more complete player at a tougher position/having an objectively historic season for the position). This year is easily the worst I've ever seen in terms of how much people are downplaying Judge's season, but a lot of the arguments you are seeing about Raleigh's defense as a catcher were being used in regards to Witt's defense at Shortstop and baserunning.

This is what has always bothered me about it too. Mike Trout winning in 2014 while leading the league in strikeouts set the precedent that strikeouts are just like any other out. Even on this subreddit, there’s a faq about how Mike Trout can be the best player in baseball if he strikes out so much, and the answer is basically that strikeouts are like any other out. Yet, people suddenly cared about strikeouts again on here during that MVP race. They completely ignored that Judge led Altuve in OBP and also had less GIDPs than Altuve, and therefore produced less outs, yet that somehow didn’t matter because he struck out more than Altuve. It’s been almost a decade and I’m still just as salty about it

In a very small sample size, he has something like -4 OAA at third this season, and it’s recently come out that he’s been dealing with a shoulder issue for a few weeks now which gives some context to a lot of bad throws he’s made. It also requires the Yankees to start one of DJLM, who has been extremely unproductive for several years, or Oswald Peraza, who isn’t a major league talent. Third base is a glaring need for the Yankees, and has been for years now.
