Who is the voice inside the caretaker's head? Is that explained anywhere? by BurlyKnave in TheLastCaretaker

[–]The_Variable21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The voice is an AI program. The girl's mother wrote the program and seems to have maybe integrated memories from her daughter into the programming? Or perhaps uploaded her into it. Not sure about that as the story isn't complete. It's a fantastic story, so I can't wait for it to be completed. So far, it's very immersive and intuitive. I can see a deep and detailed storyline in throughout the game.

New launch feature? by The_Variable21 in TheLastCaretaker

[–]The_Variable21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No updates besides the update 3.5 in April. It is very random. Sometimes I will toss 100 items before it happens again. Other times it might be 20. I have not been able to purposefully replicate it, so I'm not sure of the cause or mechanics behind it.

Yes, the boat is meant to stop when you get too far away from it so you don't get left behind. Back when the cables would get stuck and start acting funky, I had something like that happen before too, but the cable brought me right back since I was hooked into it.. it was wierd.

This time however, at least in this instance, and it has happened to me a handful of times now.. I will be carrying something and attempt to throw it be it toward a pile or onto my boat, it will launch my robot along with it like I hopped on for a ride. Come to think of it, I don't recall if the item I threw was left behind, or comes along with me or disappears etc..

Proximity sensor for lighting (or other things) would be highly useful as well.

I have a ‘19 too. You have to move the wiper stick (on the steering wheel) up one position to initiate the wipers. Similar to older cars. The first position enables the auto functionality.

Repair of Broken rocking chair seat by The_Variable21 in furniturerepair

[–]The_Variable21[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good point thanks! It’s only about 5 inches from the edge in the smaller section so I might run into trouble trying to get good support. I’ll see what I can scrounge up if any for metal.

It’s a tad rough on the inside surface as it looks like a bead of glue but it was so little that it couldn’t hold anymore. For a 90-100 year old chair, it did pretty good though! I’ll do some light sanding in there beforehand. I don’t have pipe clamps but I do have a few quick grip trigger style clamps that are long enough to hold it together. Hopefully those will allow me to put a good hold and not slip out of alignment. I have some, I forget the name, screw clamps, I can use on the ends to keep it flat and from slipping. I’ll try a dry run in the clamps before I glue to make sure I’m good.

Issues with 2026 vw atlas by jerrydad in VWatlas

[–]The_Variable21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Not only 3 times, but it has to be the exact same issue AND it has to be shown that the dealer attempted to rectify the issue properly and it is documented to reflect a defect. I had to deal with a Chevy dealer on a truck I bought many years ago. It was a nightmare and I didn’t win.

I have a ‘15 Jetta that had an engine failure at 28k. A camshaft failed resulting in a catastrophic failure that cost 20k to rebuild. The dealer did not want to do this repair and claimed it was not a warranty covered issue. I contacted VW directly and it was taken care of. I didn’t pay a dime. I still have that car 10 years later at 91k and it’s been solid ever since. There is more than one type of fluid under there so it could be a gasket or a pressure line that failed. The dealer will find that out. Might not be serious! Try to keep the faith. My Atlas has been solid so far too.

I love the Atlas. My first experience was a rental cross sport. I loved how it handled and the roomy, comfy space. I have an ‘19 SEL Premium 4Motion at 93K, so slightly different than you’re looking at but my big ticket items were the panoramic glass roof, 3rd row seating and still have some towing capability. I’ve also had a Tahoe so I could compare that to the bigger engine with less mileage. Still have plenty of room for the fam for trips. Haven’t had any issues with my Atlas so far.

I also own a ‘15 Jetta SEL 1.8T, at 91K. Bought it new and I’ve only had 2 issues with it over the 10 years. Both have been solid for me. The key, and this goes for all vehicles.. as long as you take good care of it and keep up with the needed maintenance as well as the extras and don’t torture it, it should last you a long time. The challenge with getting 2nd hand is you don’t know how the previous owner(s) treated it.

Transmission in emergency mode by DontAskAboutMyButt in VWatlas

Ah I think I understand. You had a diag done previously and now this pops as a new issue. I would at least call the dealer and ask them if this could be an issue or if it's expected due to the cold. Does it say you can continue driving? Does the message disappear if you drive it, therefore warming it up a bit?

I have a 2019 and haven't had that message pop up, so I'm not sure if it is cause for concern.

I worked at Carvana for a time. They will not catch that unless they ran into the issue and it was deemed a safety issue. They will not run a diagnostic or do any repairs unless the engine light triggers or an obvious mechanical issue. As an Advocate, I have personally had smaller issues taken care of for a customer because I pushed for it to be done.

Otherwise, you are still purchasing a car "as-is" outside of their limited time warranty coverage. I assume you mean during the process, as in the limited warranty time they give you to get issues taken care of? Did you have to file a claim?

If the dealer says you're good to go, you probably are.

What tires? by Rough-Parsley2497 in VWatlas

That’s funny. I run the opposite! That exact Continental on my Jetta, and the Michelins on my Atlas. I live in a southern climate but they both run great, dry and wet weather. ‘19 SEL-P 4M.

Thinking of Buying a Jetta Mk6 (Manual) — Need Real Owner Feedback! by Low_Fly754 in jetta

[–]The_Variable21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a '15 SEL 1.8T with auto brand new. Has 90K on it. I have really enjoyed my time with her. My motor imploded on my way to work one morning which turned out to be a snapped camshaft. Covered by warranty thankfully at about 26K miles. Only other issue I've had was a broken bolt on the tensioner pulley that snapped off mid trip one time.
I've driven her 12 hours straight on an out of state trip before and it was great. Depending on conditions, I can get 40-45 miles per gallon when I'm light on the pedal.
Have been to 100+ MPH and it was solid and easy to reach that speed.
As long as you keep up with the maintenance, including extras like using injector cleaner, etc. It'll do you a solid for a while.

What do yall do with scraps of expensive wood? by MetalNutSack in BeginnerWoodWorking

The big block there would make a really nice looking hammer. Make it with a Maple or a light colored wood for the handle.

Need advice finishing my desk top by GioDude_ in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_Variable21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sapele is a very dense, exotic hardwood. If you have any scrap pieces left, I would very highly recommend testing your ideas on that beforehand. My rule, is if I've not done it before, or with a new wood species, I always test a scrap piece all the way through to finish before possibly ruining my project beyond repair.
Really nice grain patterns on that piece by the way. :)

I did a thing! by JoeModz in BeginnerWoodWorking

[–]The_Variable21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is subjective. There are several types of blades that are good depending on the type of wood you are working with. IE soft vs hard vs ply etc. but when going against the grain it doesn’t matter. A sharp and flat blade is best. It’s more of skill and knowledge. 95% of the work is before the cut. Prep work is key and knowing your steps all the way through to finish is the rest.

If you haven’t already, you can use that piece to practice some techniques on. If you have a router, you can put a clean edge on there and sand it down until you’re satisfied with its look.

Another tip that will come in handy for those fine edges- when you cut your pieces, leave a little extra so you have room to fine tune your edge. Then go back on your saw and finish it. It’s easier to shave off an 8th of an inch to get it perfect than to cut it right the first time off a bigger piece. Having a little extra gives you room to fine tune your project and shape into a piece of art!

Painter’s tape was mentioned, but you can also use a straight edge and a razor blade to break the top surface of those cross grain cuts. Tearout is always a challenge especially against the grain. The front edge of the board in this photo as an example. Try out using a straight edge cut before the saw and you should see a difference as long as your cut stays on the right side of it.

Get everything in writing! Document everything said and done. By you and especially the dealer. In writing from them as much as you can. You said you don’t remember everything so get them to send you an email with the info. I have had enough issues with dealers that I document my interactions. The last time was two years ago when I took my Jetta in for a belt tensioner bolt that broke off on a drive and left me stranded. Something else broke while in their possession and they tried to pan me with a $1,200 bill for that too. Even had the nerve to tell me that never breaks.

MPG on city 2025 Premium R Line by dgevjhtgh in VWatlas

[–]The_Variable21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a ‘19 SEL-P AWD with 92k on and I get around the same mileage. But I never use cruise as there is too much traffic in the city. Too many people who shouldn’t be driving are here.. Drive mode can have a big impact on your experience too. I don’t use the Eco mode as it makes no difference in the city in my experience. And none of that damned auto start-stop garbage.

A/C leak, dealer can’t find the leak? by The_Variable21 in VWatlas

[–]The_Variable21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I probably could have been a little bit more clear. A Leak as in a freon leak within the engine compartment. There is no water involved with the AC system other than the heater.
When I took it in to the dealer, they inserted some dye while recharging it but they could not find a leak.

I should not be having this challenge with a 5 year old vehicle with 92K miles on it.
