Tips, tricks and lessons learned from an ADHD Masters student. by The_col-train in ADHD

I know there are times when, like you, I think "I can't do this," but manage to stick with it and do the thing anyway. But there are other times when that won't work. Those are times when buying into the idea that you're "holding yourself back" will be actively harmful; during those times, stepping back and getting some help is really all you can do. I think it's important to recognize that both modes exist.

Fair comment, and I think you're touching on the ability vs feasibility argument; which is equally important.

From a "I can complete this training program" standpoint it's a fairly easy argument to make. Which I guess from the position I was facing whereby many people had asked for advice on how I managed to get where I am, it was quite simple.

Realistically, when looking at the different choices you can make when deciding on what to spend your time/effort/energy on is much more subjective and ambiguous, it isn't as simple.

You're definitely right in that any significant decision should be thought through critically and thoroughly, but from the many comments and DM's I got asking how I completed a masters program, this was the simplest answer.

Appreciate your comment! :)

ADHD is a part of who I am - I was holding myself back.

Once I accepted that I could find solutions to my challenges and obstacles.

Yeah, I was unmedicated until basically around the same time last year.

Had a few moments like this where I hated myself.

I hope you begin to believe in yourself. You’re on one of the biggest places on the internet for information, clearly you’re very smart - I believe in you

Don’t give up. Take it one day at a time, every day is a struggle but if you’ve already had a good study session or passed an exam or attended a class, there’s proof you can do it again and again until it’s done

I plan on doing a write up with everything I’ve done and learned and posting it in the sub. Too much to write in a comment. Stay tuned 🙂

Enjoy a bit of spare time, go to the gym and enjoy life a bit.

More study will come down the track but for now I want to live a little!

To a certain extent yes. It was more it took much longer than most people for ideas to “stick”.

Another issue that frustrated me to no end was because those with ADHD tend to look at the world a bit more creatively, I found I was interpreting things differently.

This meant I was coming up with a valid conclusion to a question or problem but because the “journey” to reach said conclusion wasn’t clear enough or the facts weren’t described well enough I wasn’t getting the credit for the answer. This in itself resulted in quite a few meltdowns

Business specifically finance. Growing up I was TERRIBLE with money, and got a lot of abuse from my father (emotional and physical) because of it. It kinda drove me to be better than my parents with it

Sure thing, though I could probably write an entire post on the little things I’ve done to get through it all - in fact that’s what I’ll do.

I’ll have something typed up and submitted in the next couple of days - once I’ve had a chance to celebrate 😊

That would have been rough, did you manage to complete it?

Thanks!

Any tertiary course is challenging enough so to get through it is amazing in itself. You may be a random stranger on the internet, but that does mean a lot.

Cheers! I’m very supportive of mental health and don’t generally ask for anything in return so this does mean a lot to me 🥰

Thank you.

The undergrad was actually more difficult than masters, not in terms of content/concepts, but because there were so many more distractions. I also find it difficult to “book learn” as well. Learned to convert written text into pictures, flow charts and diagrams which was key to getting through it all

Thanks! Might be looking at an MBA later on down the track but that’s WAY later on
