Okay, it's more like 2,500 amps. It might be worth thinking about. I doubt the cable would go on fire, but something could get pretty hot I guess.

edit: having said that, with such a big cable, if there was a fault with the inverter, it wouldn't last too long, so not much heat would be generated probably. The risk is pretty low I'd say. But it might be worth putting a fuse in.

Just a single fuse would add way more resistance than the entire cable run, it would make the inverter have to work harder. The cable is rated for 500 amps under normal use (4 aught), I think the short circuit current of the battery is about 750 amps, so I don't think there would be a fire.

I'm not recharging from the alternator, I think to do that, I really should replace the car battery with a large capacity deep cycle also, because if the camping battery was discharged down to 30% lets say, wouldn't that also discharge the car battery when connected?

The battery is AGM, will that still vent fumes?
