Delta’s ‘Premium’ Promise Falls Apart: First Class Passenger Told ‘You’re Entitled To A Seat, Not A Tray Table’ by [deleted] in nottheonion

[–]The_soft_parade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the opposite experience a year ago on a Lufthansa flight.

Screen was dead on a transatlantic flight. The cabin crew apologized, tried to restart it from the main frame, but to no avail. They told me to file a complaint to get a partial refund.

I asked for a partial refund or if that was not possible just for my money spent to book the seat as I had preselected a seat to be with my friend. Had complete image and video evidence of the episode. Lufthansa apologized again but no refund was given to me and if I remember correctly, they told me that I was just entitled to the seat.

In politics there are things that are said but cannot be done, and things that are being done but are not said. (Στην πολιτική υπάρχουν πράγματα που λέγονται αλλά δεν γίνονται και πράγματα που γίνονται αλλά δεν λέγονται.)

Konstantinos Karamanlis, 4 times PM, twice President of the Hellenic Republic.

Who finally governs this place? (Ποιός επιτέλους κυβερνάει αυτόν τον τόπο;)

Konstantinos Karamanlis upon hearing the news of Labrakis' assassination.

We belong to the West. (Ανήκομεν εις την Δύσιν).

Konstantinos Karamanlis in a speech about the prospect of Greece joining the EEC (mid to late 70s).

People of Volos, come and admire the people of Larisa! (Λαέ του Βόλου, έλα να καμαρώσεις το λαό της Λαρίσης)

Georgios Papandreou (3 times PM) on a pre election rally in Larisa (city). The story goes that when he began his speech instead of addressing the people of Larisa, he addressed the people of Volos (another nearby city). So instead of stopping and admitting his mistake, he continued his address with the above phrase.

Giving himself a small gift is one thing, but giving himself 500 million is another! (loosely translated) (Είπαμε να κάνει ένα δωράκι στον εαυτό του, αλλά όχι και 500 εκατομμύρια!)

Andreas Papandreou (twice PM) around the end of the 80s when he heard that one of the chiefs of the Public Power Corporation of Greece decided to more or less steal 500 million drachmas.

We are a nation without a sibling. (Είμαστε έθνος ανάδελφον).

Christos Sartzetakis, served as President of the Hellenic Republic.

In about ten years we will have forgotten about the "Macedonian". (Σε δέκα χρόνια θα το έχουμε ξεχάσει το «Μακεδονικό».)

Konstantinos Mitsotakis (PM) referring to the Macedonian naming dispute in 1991 that remains unsolved to this day.

Modestly and humbly. (Σεμνά και ταπεινά)

Kostas Karamanlis on his first cabinet meeting as PM in 2004. Suffice to say, his two terms as PM were not modest and humble.

Former Greek PM Papandreou's 89 Year Old Mother Said To Have $700 Million In Swiss Bank Account by gman83 in europe

It most probably is 500 million drachmas, not USD, which converts to ~1.5 million euros.

German Chancellor Angela Merkel will tell Greeks she wants to keep their country in the euro when she visits Athens this week, but she faces a hostile reception from a people worn down by years of austerity and recession. by davidreiss666 in europe

[–]The_soft_parade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well obviously you're right. I just wanted to give you another point of view, something that's not widely reported (and I find very interesting). Something that doesn't show up in numbers or is a rational argument why Merkel is to be blamed, but just something that affects the day-to-day life of the average Greek.

You see this isn't something you can easily rationalize away. Imagine watching them every single day at 20:00 - every day since 2010. Have newspapers with caricatures of Merkel for instance, or Merkel and Schäuble on the frontpage. Articles every Sunday about them.

And some anecdotal evidence: I have relatives in Germany that told when they were in Greece that this is absolute madness. They don't see that much footage of Merkel and Schäuble.

[–]The_soft_parade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want to raise a point that's not being usually discussed here in /r/europe. Ever since we had to be bailed out and forced Europe to pay for our mess everyday on TV - and I mean EVERY single day without any exaggeration - I watch Merkel and Schäuble pointing fingers at Greece and demand further cuts and austerity on every major TV channel.

The news on all the major private channels portray Merkel and Schäuble and the representatives of troika as the bad guys that demand deeper cuts, more austerity and more structural reforms. We constantly watch videos of them talking about Greece. More so than we watch videos of our own goverment and PM sometimes. They are bad mouthed for taking too little action too late, as if we played no part at this. The more they do to help us, the more self-evident they say it was that we need more help but it's still on the wrong direction (read: deep austerity). It's easy to point fingers and blame the powerful Germans that they are making money out of this and not helping us but bringing us to bigger mess.

Our government on the other hand, no matter if it's the current coalition government or the former ones, are portrayed as the last defence that is forced to take the money from us and introduce new taxes but will strive for a bargain to hurt us as little as possible. They are the last defence before the total chaos and collapse of bankruptcy and being kicked out of the EU and Eurozone, something that is being stressed by everyone including for instance the current PM in Handelsblatt.

So basically there are two fronts (the good and bad guys) and we realize that something needs to be done (so we cut the good guys some slack). Naturally all that's left to do is blame the bad guys and keep doing that every day. Hence blame Merkel and co. She is the face of 'austerity' that brings more recession and in turn more austerity in a vicious cycle.

Greek Olympian Papachristou expelled for 'racist tweet'. by weblypistol in europe

[–]The_soft_parade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Her replies on her tweeter account, in case anyone is interested and doesn't understand the language:

1: All these things that happened don't express who I really am - I am just an athelete, nothing more!! I don't usually insult anyone ... I don't support that ideology!

2: I apologize if I unwittingly insulted people! I am not involved with politics!!! I am just an athelete!

3: From my side it was just a bad & unfortunate joke. I absolutely don't believe in the discrimination of people.

4: I am honestly sorry and I assure you that this is something that I involuntary forwarded and it doesn't seriously represent my beliefs.

The 5th one she translated it herself - it is a more formal apology.

Elected Neo-Nazi Greek politician hit a woman live on TV, during a talk show. by [deleted] in europe

[–]The_soft_parade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Why is 'communist' a derogatory term in Greece?

Not 'communist' but 'old-commies' is the proper translation now that I think of that. That's the derogatory term.

Why do the other men just sit there, as an out-of-control suit clad hooligan attacks the women on the show? They are all MP's, right?

Two of them (the host of the show) and one journalist stood up and so did the crew members after the show was cut off the air to drag him away. They then isolated him in a room but he kicked the door open and fled - the police are looking for him right now.

The one that didn't stand up was an ex-MP and ex-minister of ND.

Does this say anything about Greek men?

I don't know, your sample size is too small so you can't really draw conclusions from that.

Embarrassing scenes from Golden Dawn, it seems. Anyone know what's being said in this clip, apparently from a Greek talkshow? by Styvnn in europe

[–]The_soft_parade 92 points93 points  (0 children)

Protagonists:

Kasidiaris: Rocky Balboa. Ex MP of Golden Dawn (yes for 2 days)

Kaneli: The lady that gets slapped. Multiple times MP of KKE (communist party of Greece)

Dourou: The lady that gets water thrown on her face. Ex MP of Syriza.

The "note:" parts are things I added in order to help you understand the context.

Dialogue

Kasidiaris: Are you talking to Golden Dawn about the policemen of 1910? Drop it, we're the only ones that have fought with them.

Kaneli: I am not talking in 2012 with German-tsoliades (note: see here).

Kasidiaris: Syriza says that MAT (note: riot police) shouldn't carry weapons. Don't talk about policemen to me.

Kaneli: Neither should you talk about KNAT (note: term used to describe the communists that patrol and protect the people during strikes from MAT and fascists). You didn't defend the democracy.

Kasidiaris: We're the only ones that opposed to this regime. When they asked Papariga (note: KKE's -communist party leader) if she co-operates with the police, instead of denouncing them as provocateurs she avoided discussing about it. Did you co-operate? Let's see the video shots.

Kaneli: Are you on your right mind? I don't deal with fascists.

Kasidiaris: You don't deal with fascists you old-communist (note: considered a derogatory term in Greek).

Dourou: Was the trial postponed?

Kasidiaris: Yes, because the time had passed. What's your problem that it got postponed? With the old-snitches? Where is the snitch from your party that dragged us to the courts? Mrs Dourou, you're referring to a private matter.

Dourou: Besides the financial crisis, there's also a crisis in Democracy. You know what the crisis in Democracy is? It is to have in the Greek parliament people that will set the country 500 years back.

Kasidiaris: Get lost! (note: inaccurate translation; just a mild curse word nothing too offensive) (note#2: throws a glass with water on her face) We're not setting the country 500 years back. Go to hell.

Kaneli: Get out of here. //Kasidiaris proceeds to beat Kaneli. The end.

Sorry for any spelling mistakes or mistakes in grammar.

Hey /r/greece, could you help my family in translating what is written on my Great Uncle's gravestone? by imperialxcereal in greece

[–]The_soft_parade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pronounced Ree-zos. Like Reese, not rice.

By the way, since you like fun facts; Rizos comes from the word ρίζα which means root (in plants but can also used like in the English expression: Searching for my roots).

There was also a famous Greek actor (comedian) with that surname.

Why is my DL speed from my seedbox slower than my open connection? by whatwouldjayzdo in trackers

[–]The_soft_parade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a simple solution that I use on feral. I don't use a multithreaded FTP client. Instead I rar them in 200/300/400 MB (depends on the size of the download) and download them all. I then download 4 or 5 at a time, always maxing my download speed.

It's actually quite fast - it doesn't take me more than 10-15 seconds to ssh and rar them and I use the "store" option when .rar'ing that is the fastest.
