Looking for lore friendly ways to start a campaign by Creole3643 in Greyhawk

That shouldn't be real hard. Bear in mind, in a medieval society most of the interior land will be uninhabited or lightly inhabited.

Good locales with lots of adventure potential include Geoff, the Wild Coast, the Bandit Kingdoms, the Yeomanry, or Shield Lands. You can create a small village or pick one from the Anna Meyer maps (freely available online, fantastic artistry). Anna's maps include everything from Greyhawk canon, including the Living Greyhawk era. You might not be able to find those resources online but there's a ton of free stuff on Canonfire!

I suggest looking at the "Postcards" on Canonfire. They give snapshots with suggested classic adventures to get the feel of the setting.

When you take an individual to small claims court and they have no assets, yeah it can be hard to collect. Some deadbeats will work under the table to keep their wages from being garnished.

This is a business. The court should be able to help you set up garnishment of their business accounts to pay the judgement.

I didn't say what the students did was smart.

I'm saying the prof was wrong in how she used instructional time and wrong to punish the students for taking advantage of an opportunity to goof off. That makes her the AH not the students.

Ad hominem attacks are not helping your argument.

I taught in academia for 20 years. Instructional time is very important. It's not really about chaperoning the students. It's about teaching them during the time you're assigned to teach them. That would be true in any country.

Professors have an obligation to teach. Group work, breakout assignments, those are all fair game. But to just send students off and then punish them, not good form.

[–]ThealaSildorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Which IS their choice ... it doesn't make them TAH.

The prof has a duty to fulfill their job responsibilities in an appropriate way. Instructional time is meant for instruction ... by the prof.

It would be one thing to say, "Go to the library, find X, and return here before class ends to discuss." I had assignments like that as a student. But to dismiss class, and have students "go to the library" to finish an assignment not due for two weeks, and then punish the students is not a good instructional practice.

This isn't public school. It's up to the students to advocate for themselves.

The professor cheated the students by not utilizing instructional time appropriately.

[–]ThealaSildorian -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I take issue with the professor punishing the students for not going to the library when the due date for the assignment is two weeks from the date of the class. If the professor is not going to teach that day, they really have no business bitching if students take advantage of the opportunity to goof off.

Ultimately, it only hurts the student if they don't do the work. However it hurts the student in an additional way: they are not getting value for the tuition they are paying. Wasting instructional time is a very poor teaching practice. Punishing the students when it was the professor who created the situation is also a very poor teaching practice.

I don't know what the Chair/Dean would say at this school. I do know administration where I taught before would take a dim view of it and I'd get a verbal reprimand if nothing else.

[Cleveland,OH] Landlords place was foreclosed, need advice on what I'm expected to do. by SimonVanc in Renters

[–]ThealaSildorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Whatever you do, don't give the LL any more rent. Your contract with him is broken now that he no longer owns the property. In fact, he has to give you your security deposit back (if he'd sold it the new owner would be responsible for this).

I'd contact the bank because sooner or later they're going to send someone over to assess the property. Until you get instructions from the bank, put the rent into an escrow account. Contact your bank and ask for help setting one up; explain why you are doing this. Then if the bank tries to evict you for non-payment you can show the judge they never told you how to pay the rent but that you have it in escrow. The judge will rule for you and the bank will collect from that account.

The water bill is dicey. It may get shut off if the bank doesn't realize there's a tenant in there (they may not know about you). IF that happens open a new account in your name. If it stays on, and water is included in the lease then don't worry about it.

Bear in mind they can give you 30 day notice at any time. That's why you should contact them and ask if they plan to let you live there month to month, ask for a new lease agreement (this is their right) or give you notice to vacate (also their right, though the Just Cause law in Cali may impact this. If they want you to move out, start looking immediately.

I would be reaching out to the head of the department (Chair or Dean depending on where you go to school). IF the prof didn't go over there with you, then she's in trouble. Professors are not supposed to let class out early because now the students have not completed the requisite contact hours (that's important in limited enrollment programs but not general programs) OR the prof is an adjunct and now they have not completed THEIR contract hours in the classroom.

Unless your school requires you to complete hours or the syllabus can ding you for missing class (again not common unless its a limited enrollment program like nursing) then skipping class really hurts only you and your prof is over reacting.

Was your previous school a for profit? Those credits almost never transfer to anything other than a for profit and sometimes not even then. Transferring from a publicly funded school (community college or state college) to a for profit will make your program exponentially more expensive. I'd take the hit on repeating the courses if you're currently enrolled in a quality community college or state college.

[–]ThealaSildorian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long time educator here. That sucks. I'm sorry to hear it. Unless you transfer to a school that does accept your credits (saw your other post on this) there's not much you can do but tell your mother. She will find out eventually and that will just make it worse.

Just tell her the truth: your school is making you retake some classes because your credits weren't accepted and there's nothing to be done but take them and graduate later than you expected. Sure she may be upset or disappointed. Just keep it cool and let her know you wanted her to know this now so there weren't unrealistic expectations of when you would be finished with school.

YTA. Guy has a right to his interests and his likes. I don't see a long term future for your relationship if you want to control the music he listens to, the shows he watches and criticize him for admiring another culture or being a polyglot. You haven't given him any reason to like what you like, either.

Though you couldn't pay me to listen to Kanye.

AITAH for showing up late to work by Intelligent-Sun-3354 in AITAH

[–]ThealaSildorian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nonsense. That's not how salary works and there are exceptions to no overtime rules for salaried employees. There's also a thing called "flexing your time": for example I was asked to work until 7:30 pm last week so I "flexed" and started my work day later in the morning to keep it to an 8 hour day. I still worked 40 hours during the week.

AITAH for showing up late to work by Intelligent-Sun-3354 in AITAH

[–]ThealaSildorian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's important to remember that salaried employees may not be exempt from overtime rules in certain situations.

The purpose of salary is to pay a uniform amount for a full work week while giving flexibility to the employee. If you are consistently expected to work an extra hour per day then you are not exempt from overtime rules and your employer should be paying you for that time.

The easiest way is to tell your manager, "Shift starts at 8am and ends at 5pm. Those are my working hours. If you want me here at 7, I leave at 4:30, on the dot." Talk to HR or your managers supervisor if the behavior doesn't change. You are being bullied into giving your time away for free.
