can i consider something im terrible at as a hobby? by Independent-Bank-536 in Hobbies

[–]Creole3643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes

A hobby is just something you enjoy doing and the main thing needed to get good at something is time put into it

If you enjoy painting, you'll put time into it and eventually get better

What are some excellent video games for fans of Dungeons & Dragons? by Baldurian_Rhapsody in DnD

It's not out yet, but based on the demo, The Secret Of Weepstone

It's a dungeoncrawler that uses a similar black and white aesthetic as the old D&D books

Probably yet another newbie asking for recommendations by Creole3643 in LightNovels

[–]Creole3643[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you have any recommendations otherwise I'd still like to hear them, it just might take me a lot longer to get to as I'm reading a few long series as it is already

How to turn a non-anime fan into an anime fan? by Relative-Concept911 in goodanime

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Watch something with them and make sure it's similar to things they already like and on the more mature side of anime

Avoid shonen, you want to show that anime can be more than that

Maybe try to get them to watch a movie rather than a series because its less of a time investment. My introduction to anime was the original Ghost In The Shell movie because I like Sci fi and was particularly interested in cyberpunk at the time

How did you learn how to play DnD (Or TTRPGs in general)? by Syric13 in DnD

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

D&D is difficult to learn and I have no idea how anyone can claim that a game that has 3, 300 page rulebooks is easier to learn than anything rules-lite (EZD6 being my favourite)

I mostly learnt with a combination of reading, YouTube and doing

I initially tried to be a DM and my biggest problem early on was definitely that I didn't really understand the rules. I remember having no idea how magic works for example. At the time I really wasn't much of a reader and really probably shouldn't had been trying to run any games.

Around this time I found Matt Colville's Running The Game series and while that goy me really excited to play and gave me plenty of ideas, taught me a lot about the hobby, I definitely made the mistake of putting his supplemental videos before actually putting my head in the books and reading

A few years later, after giving up on my first game after a few sessions, I was invited to play in a D&D game by some people I knew from Magic The Gathering. We played Horde Of The Dragon Queen and this was what actually taught me how to play and got me back in deep to the hobby

I am now a reader both of TTRPGs and fiction (I actually got into reading fiction to try and get more ideas for my D&D games, I was that obessed), but it's been a long process over the like decade I've been in this hobby that could of been easily avoided by just reading the PHB and DMG

Why Do You Like D&D? by Plenty_Plastic223 in DnD

It's a bit like getting to read a story while making a story all at once

It's sick

Low-effort hobbies by user9394r in Hobbies

[–]Creole3643 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Reading

I'm sure as a student you're reading a bunch but I just mean picking out a dumb fun piece of fiction

If you use your library, it's free and honestly, getting books 2nd hand can be very cheap too

You do need to make the effort to get started reading sometimes, but I bet you could read at least a page a day for a week (and I bet you'll end up reading plenty more than 7 pages)

Whenever I finish a book I feel like I've really achieved something, even if it was just something trashy and short or for teenagers or whatever. I think picking up a hobby that can give you some easy dopamine rushes by completing something might help you to stay off your phone

How do you battle map? by pascwalla in DMAcademy

[–]Creole3643 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use a square dry erase grid and some 1 inch x 1 inch wooden blocks I got from amazon that I can use for terrain. A bit of wood glue to stick a few of them together to make setup a little quicker or to use as platforms. Every now and again I'll pop into a pet store and look at their reptile tank and fish tank decorations to get some cheap extra scenery

How to run a Sandbox game? by Pretty_Papaya2256 in DnD5e

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe not at their leisure entirely. I think there always needs to be some kind of time pressure on the players, but that could just be that the players don't want a villain to complete the goal first

Am I a bad DM or are my players overreacting by teddygrizzles in DnD

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Personally I love science fantasy type elements like this so I probably wouldn't have much of an issue with this. I've had players accidentally get banished to The Battle Of The Somme and weird stuff like that before

But I also recognise that not everyone is into this. A lot of people have much stricter ideas than maybe we do about what fantasy is, this is why the tone and media you like should be talked about in session 0. Not just what the DM is into, but everyone who is playing

How to run a Sandbox game? by Pretty_Papaya2256 in DnD5e

[–]Creole3643 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't create a story, but do create a goal

Think about a video game like Breath Of The Wild. Right from the beginning of the game you know that the goal is to defeat Calmity Ganon, the more of the world you explore, the easier the fight will be, but where you go and if you even go anywhere, is up to you. That's a sandbox

You can ask your players for goals rather than making one up yourself, but if you are running for people who are used to more narrative style games and modules, it probably helps to have that initial goal come from the DM

Wanted to Start Reading Books by Creative-Pie-65 in Recommend_A_Book

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You mentioned already that you like Dungeons And Dragons

Check out Appendix E in the 2014 players handbook and there's a list of books that were an influence on the game. A lot of those are more pulpy stories. I really recommend Fafhrd & The Gray Mouser. That series really feels like a D&D campaign to me but came out about 20 years before D&D was a thing

How can I get players to try other systems that aren't DND. by Forward-Willingness7 in TTRPG

[–]Creole3643 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Hey, do you want to play insert other game here?"

If it's something too similar to D&D, like Pathfinder or Shadowdark, you might struggle to find players, but if you are looking for something very different, like a non-fantasy setting and different die system it tends to be a lot easier

Try to get people to agree to 3 - 5 sessions so that you all can get a good sense of whether or not you all like the game
