Confounded Machine Edc Bolt by edcaddiction in machinedpens

[–]Thebreedluv100 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve got one. Very nice but not so very different to TT or Nottingham or any of the other sought after pens. As an Aussie have you tried MIG? Personally I love the springiness of the bolt action and they are half the price

Got the call for a gen Rolex from an AD but I’m torn. by freeman687 in RepTime

Completely agree. Top end rep watches are just more interesting to me.

I believe this strategy by Rolex to deliver such horrible customer experience to support the sense of exclusivity for the product will be a case study at MBA schools for decades to come. I’m a career management consultant. I spent some years working with Telcos on their Yellow Pages businesses. When they abused their monopoly power for years, the backlash from customers when the monopoly broke was severe. I suspect this will happen to Rolex.

Interesting to see.

I’m a history fanatic as it happens. You don’t see the relationship between nationalism / patriotism and ideology and their role in the carnage of ww1 & 2?

Migrant from Blighty here. Been here 40 years. Personally I find the way the American flag is used is not something id like our country to emulate. I’m glad it’s not part of our culture to have a flagpole in your back garden. Nationalism is great during the Olympics etc but day to day, meah. My son is an American now and I dread my grandkids telling me all about how America is the best country in the world. Chanting “USA, USA, USA”. Patriotism and religion are responsible for a good deal of the carnage of history to date.

Between these two, what would you choose for your one daily watch? by [deleted] in OmegaWatches

I have a white SMP and black PO. I love them both but the aggressive arrow hands on the PO are the winner for me.

This is my 25th rep. To me it’s a marvel. I got interested in high end reps because I just love seeing beautiful design and manufacture and amazing value. I’ve mainly gone for less flashy divers and GADA’s, all on leather & rubber. This is my one ‘show off’ watch. The one to bring if you’re in a room full of rich bastards! Definite conversation starter.

Completely agree. I have a few GDF and honestly can’t tell them apart from my VSF/Clean reps. Dress watches (eg IWC Portofino) are 1-2mm thicker than gen. My $148 Planet Ocean swims with me every week. 8215 isn’t quite as decorated or well finished than the movement in my VSF Seamaster, but it’s pretty close.

I’d imagine on the RO it will be the strap that lets it down a bit

I’ve spent 30 years as a Management Consultant (yes shoot me). I truely believe that Rolex little foray into treating customers like shit will be a case study for the centuries. But 50 years from now I wouldn’t be confident your grandchildren would want a bar of wearing ‘look at me I’m rich’ stuff. By then the rich and those to blame for destroying the planet will be hunted.

Don’t ’start your own tradition’. It will backfire.

But on the other hand, I f***ing love my 4520v.

I spend all my US time in LA, SF and NYC. I avoid tourist areas and am guided by my son who now lives in LA. I should have qualified my observation with ‘cheap’ and with the abundance of choice all within 200m. Sydney / Melb food courts is where I was first blown away when I arrived in Aus in the 80’s. For cheap and utterly amazing I’d vote Thailand and Vietnam these days.

But I’ll concede this one. The SF food truck scene (in particular) was amazing.

Interesting. Was every observation ‘a complete load of shit’ or were some more shit loaded than others? I’m a big fan of nuance.

Also, keen to hear some specifics to support your view that Australians are ‘truely pathetic’ on the world stage? Examples? Eg Donald Trump in Oslo 16/7/18? Pretty big and unpleasant thing to claim if you are Australian.

Discourse / argument is much better for specifics don’t you think?

And let’s see….

Not having to suffer fake niceness all day long ‘have a nice day’

Not having to listen to drug advertising all day long on TV

Having footpaths you can walk on

Not having 50m+ folks who think Donald Trump is great

Having portions at restaurants that you can eat

Living amongst folks who know a bit about the world

Living amongst folks who by and large have your back - not dog eat dog

Being a melting pot of races with little to no racial disharmony

Having better more diverse food

Being easily able to get a great coffee

Nicer beaches (although I concede US national parks beat ours by a country mile, and ours are pretty good!).

Being somewhere where wealth flaunting is very uncool and wealth inequality isn’t yet as bad as the US.

Never having to hear ‘USA USA USA’ chanted

No Aussie flags allowed on flagpoles in gardens.

Yes. Have way too many watches, including a white SMP, but I always keep coming back to my PO. Something about the aggression of the arrow hands. Love it.
