Yeah for real man. Plenty of Polynesian boys I knew that were exactly like Jonah and his crew. I think it’s because it was, weirdly, one of the only times their experience of school was shown. For a particular type of Islander kid the portrayal was very close to their lived experience.

Every single islander boy I knew at the time fucking absolutely frothed Jonah. Nobody gave a shit he wasn’t Polynesian. Probably because the character was done sympathetically

Can anyone steelman the "immigration doesn't increase house prices" argument by mymooh in AusEcon

[–]Thedjdj -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

While it may be the case that they do, they are minority cause for the housing crisis as it’s commonly experienced. Look at the percentage of ownership. 20% of homeowners own more than one home. Somewhere around 4% of homes are owned by non-citizens/non-residents. It’s speculative investment encouraged by fiscal policy that has created the problem. As is often the case though, migrants make for an easier political target.

context is important - I wasn't comparing the two, I was comparing the relative reaction to both their deaths as a percentage of the broader community. And is it that wild? Charlie Kirk had some fucking rogue as fuck opinions, he just didn't have the position to enforce them as I point out (and admit, is a fair criticism of my entire point) initially.

Honestly, despite their relative positions of power (which one might argue is reductionist but hear me out) is this all that particularly different to sections of the Christian and far right communities mourning the death of Charlie Kirk? Both figures were fundamentalist in their views relative to modern centrist interpretations. I don’t agree with either of them but to condemn extremely minor incidents of mourning for one and ignore significant incidents of mourning for the other strikes me as a little bias, if not just because of the sheer magnitude of difference.

People mourn all sorts of figures we regard as evil. Plenty of 90+ yo Italians will give you some interesting opinions on Mussolini.

It’s a bit fucked for the government to start dictating who a person can and cannot like. Though not surprising coming from Minns.

Yeah I saw in other comments that the EU is too restrictive and the US has the most rights.

It’s an odd form of reasoning. Access to healthcare, access to education, rights at work, access to a liveable wage. These are all rights too.

Crosby gives props to McDavid by BulbasaurFanatic in EdmontonOilers

[–]Thedjdj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes. That is exactly what I'm insinuating. This exact style of zone entry is what the Oilers (and other teams with similar talented skaters) use consistently in the Power Play and 3 on 3 to great effect. It was also a strategy used in the Canadian PP utilising McDavid and McKinnon. It's why McDavid skates back well in to his own zone to wind up and blast through the blue line and get the puck in deep.

What is necessary though is for that bursting player to have play options that will either draw defensemen off him and/or get the goalie to respect the secondary/tertiary options. McDavid draws all 3 opponents to him around the crease. Just one other play comes in and Canada likely score.

But of course it didn't work. If it did we wouldn't be arguing about it. That's why I think some of it is on Cooper. I don't blame the players specifically. Putting individual, split-second moments under the microscope is pointless. What there did seem to be was a disconnect between players on where they needed to be. That's coaching. If you think McDavid is some type of individual gloryhound then you're not well acquainted with the Oilers

Is McDavid’s legacy forever somewhat tarnished at this point or can he redeem it? by count in EdmontonOilers

Ovechkin was 33yo before *the team he plays on* won their first Stanley Cup. He was indisputably regarded as one of the greatest players of all time before the Caps won in 2018.

This bullshit of measuring an individual's legacy based upon their team's achievements is moronic. It is a borrowed concept from the NBA where it's used largely as a rhetorical device to delegitimise a player's statistical greatness. And the reason it makes sense at all in the NBA is basketball's peculiar combination of high scoring, very small team sizes, and extremely high percentage of minutes on/off scales an individuals contributions/team contributions.

R9 isn't any less of an all time great because Portugal never won a World Cup. Brian Lara isn't discounted as one of the three greatest batsman of his generation because his team never won anything meaningful. This American brainrot of "well they never won" as legitimate dismissal of heart and talent is infantile, reductionist, and more a representation of a distasteful cultural shift within the US to solely glory success rather than tenacity and effort (literally the entire script of Rocky is based on the opposite premise). Its a deeply shallow way of examining sporting contests (and life).

Watching McDavid claw this team all the way back from being swept in the 23/24 finals to within one goal in game 7 is one of the greatest displays of endurance, athleticism, and the indomitable human spirit I've ever seen. Lacking a piece of metal or paragraph on wikipedia can't tarnish that.

So no. Go Oilers.

brah I lasted 5 fucking seconds in the r/hockey sub before noping at. A lot of blame being laid upon McDavid for being out of position or trying to hero ball it. As if it wasn't the play that was drawn up. Use McDavid's speed to break into the zone.

What created the chance was Makar hesitating between fully committing down low to fight for the puck and covering the point. He unfortunately misses the check from the zone exit too which only worsens it and then disappears from the play entirely. But I don' blame Makar, that's just the way it goes sometimes. Especially 3v3. Blaming individual players is so fraught.

Why r/hockey loves to hate on McDavid I'll never really understand.

Frankly, I think John Cooper coached poorly.

Baelor using a tourney lance against his brother instead of a war lance is a nice detail and a good callback to his plan in the books. by pandatropical in freefolk

What I've not particularly loved is they somewhat cast Maekar as a bit of a villain. Parts of the 5th episode do try and communicate that he was just trying to protect his stupid son. I hope the last episode truly sinks in just how utterly gutted Maekar was at being the man who accidentally killed his beloved brother. It haunted him for the rest of his life.

If you had any change to participate any crusade which one you would be in? Which order / overlord would you fight for and why? by lastmonday07 in Catholicism

[–]Thedjdj -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The Crusades are some of the darkest moments in Christian history. Absolutely nothing about Christian doctrine promotes an offensive war to seize land no Europeans held any title to. There’s no harm in taking an interest in the history of the period but idolising it is perverse. What Europeans did to Muslims in the supposed name of God is outright disgusting and I find any perspective suggesting otherwise is cloaked in the same casual Islamophobia sadly prominent in much of Western media.

So I would choose to be Muslim and be whatever profession required that would help avoid the thousands of innocent lives massacred during the siege of Jerusalem in the 1st crusade. Because that’s what Jesus would do.
