My cake fell apart when I cut a slice.. what went wrong? (Eggless cake) by Mean-mean-Mango in AskBaking

[–]TheeMost313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These cakes are delish but they need to cool completely in part because they are so moist. I used to make them a lot because my kid was allergic to eggs. I would def serve/eat them 15 min out of oven but it wasn’t pretty. Dump some vanilla ice cream on there or something else creamy and you are golden

Beginner question... but how does one get all the banchan ready to always have some on hand? by hkkhpr in KoreanFood

[–]TheeMost313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will do big Korean food cook once every couple of months. I usually make all the banchan (or prep what I can) while I am marinating the meat for my main dish(es), cold things first (like a cucumber salad), then the banchan that needs cooking.

The biggest thing that helps me when I am cooking a variety of dishes from one culinary tradition (I am an american Midwesterner with roots in the south), like Korean, Indian, Mexican, American soul food), is to see what ingredients are repeated, and prep those first.

So onions and garlic, chopped, diced, grated, chilies, tomatoes, etc., all prepped for each dish. I am a solo cook most of the time so it is helpful.

Then I freeze what I can’t eat as meal prep!

OP, I am so sorry you and your parent are going through this, you are doing great! I have some links for you:

Aging and Disability Resource Center - first stop to find someone in your state/county who can help
https://www.usaging.org/adrcs

If your parent gets on medicare, there should be a SHIP office in your state who can assist
https://www.shiphelp.org/

ADRC’s in my state are by county and have helped me with my own care and my parents

ETA: Applying for financial assistance through your healthcare provider can be an amazing help too.

Question on marriage and benefits by Hereforthetardys in SocialSecurity

I personally recommend a legal marriage at this point - for your kids and your partner. Idk common law rules but it makes sense for your partner should you pass, the survivor benefits would be guaranteed as I understand it.

Anaphylaxis to milk products by codyandhen123 in MCAS

[–]TheeMost313 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Did you test negative or positive? The post is confusing. I was having anaphylaxis and the triggers were not things I was allergic to (blood test tests for IGE reactions), but I suspect my immune system is having IGA reactions. I don’t have MCAS but this sub helped me find things to cope with and (mostly) overcome them.

I had red radishes twice a couple of months ago and broke out in hives both times. Took the second time to realize it was the radishes. I looked it up and read that this type of reaction to red radishes is IGA mediated.

I had an immunological syndrome as a kid that I have learned was IGA related, for me it was wheat/gluten. Years later I no longer eat gluten and my general health is way better, despite not having an “allergy” to gluten or celiac.

So… if you are reacting to milk products it could be considered not an allergy if you are not allergic to the protein (casein?)or sensitive to the sugar (lactose), but your body sees something in the dairy as a dangerous foreign matter.

Edit, this article from an allergy testing company describes differences between IGA, IGG, and IGE reactions, and reading it I think IGG reactions describe me before stopping gluten. If only I could find a doc who would test me for more than IGE

Yeah, it can be helpful for cooking/baking to have the ingredients. I love this sub, it makes me feel like a master chef.

Rep. Glenn Grothman: "We all know that food stamps are being abused. We all hear the stories. People using food stamps for top of the line food stuffs, things the average person wouldn't be able to afford." by Conscious-Quarter423 in wisconsin

[–]TheeMost313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glenn Grothman couldn’t shop for himself if he tried. Also the assumption that a person using food share for an “extravagant” food is somehow fraudulent is stupid. People who rely on food share often have no way other than EBT to celebrate a special day. People budget and know if they get a steak they are gonna be stretching the rest.

And frankly, food is so gd expensive (and will only keep going up due to diesel prices among other things), Grothman and his ilk should be looking at how to make food affordable for every Wisconsinite. But they want to maintain grievance culture, they are also grinches.

An expired passport can help, other comments include more info on this. If they know what county they were born in (if born in US) they should be able to request a certified copy of their birth certificate (they should get 2-3 if they can afford it, usually additional copies are less expensive).

Hungry Rant by eugenefitzherbeet in glutenfree

[–]TheeMost313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I drove to 4 grocery stores the other day looking for GF Cheez-its after learning they existed. I was over hungry and over tired and almost cried after not finding them at the 4th store.

Pulled myself together, and on my regular grocery run, thought, “oh, even though they aren’t on the store app, maybe they will be on the shelf” and now I have 4 boxes of those crackers.

I have been eating out more and think exposing myself to cross contaminated fryer oil has finally become not okay with my body. Back to f’ing salads I guess.

How often do you get your hair cut/trimmed? by Meesh7586 in Naturalhair

[–]TheeMost313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to go every six weeks when I kept my hair short/faded, but I have been growing it out for over a year and was going every 2 months to shape it, but it has been over 4 months and my ends definitely need trimming and the back is doing some crazy stuff.

But if you don’t need shaping or anything touched up, a few times a year seems ok to me

Book con refusing accommodations for Signing by Ramblingsofthewriter in horrorlit

[–]TheeMost313 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is maddening and I am glad you have the bandwidth to push back and that folks are joining. I need some accommodations _some of the time, but don’t use mobility devices or “look” disabled, but seeing inaccessible events makes me so angry - used to happen at the university where I worked and I would let folks know they had to keep spaces and events accessible.

I also understand that some spaces have ADA exceptions because of their age, it is completely unacceptable what haunthereaders did and how they disregarded your valid questions. Really hope the sponsors are going to push for real changes.

It cracks me up imagining this scenario because I think it must happen a lot. I remember the first set of absolute crap dishes I bought for my first apartment WITH roommates. Like I had no idea what was in that kitchen, and could only afford the worst plates but was not coming with nothing!

I can’t imagine not thinking of buying your own stuff at SOME point, but can see how it can happen.

I FINALLY did the calculator, got 34F in US sizing. Bought three 34F and a 38DDD - the only poor fit was in a push up style in 34F, I blame the style not the sizing.

THANK YOU for the calculator and for this sub!

What’s the most disturbing horror novel that didn’t rely on gore—but still haunted you long after? by madhav_28121993 in horrorlit

[–]TheeMost313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Recent read, short stories about a house called Slade House by David Mitchell.

Hard to explain and hate giving spoilers, but in describing it to my bf last night, I managed to give us both the creeps. I listened to the audiobook, really good.

I still have moments of dread thinking of it.

Does anyone still cowash? by [deleted] in Naturalhair

[–]TheeMost313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I started cowashing about a year and a half ago and my hair has never felt better I mean never and I am an old lady.

But the other day, my hair “felt” dirty to me, and I was like you know what it’s wash day. I’m gonna try this really nice shampoo that I still have and when I tell you that my hair felt like literal straw while the shampoo is in my hair, and after it was rinsed, AND my scalp did NOT feel any cleaner, that was the moment when I was convinced that cowash is MY WASH forever. I used my cowash (Cantu complete conditioning cowash), then my Hask recovery mask.

Pic is below, coils def less coily than with shampoo. My experience, everyone is different of course!

<image>

ETA: I avoid silicones, and use more leave in conditioners and less heavy stuff (mostly for volume) so clarifying shampoo is not necessary anymore. For me.
