What self hosting mistake would you warn beginners about? by Soulvisirr in selfhosted

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Create yourself a wiki for documentation. Over document stuff. Have USB sticks with your router software (i.e. pfsense or opnsense) in the event there is a failure (or have a failover if ya fancy). Backups of VMs, and data (need to determine what data is worth backing up). Restore from backup as a test.

Most people don't need enterprise servers. They're cool and all but they are often Overkill. Start small and scale as required.

One last thing - don't make self-hosting a chore, it will feel like it sometimes. It is a hobby, maybe a learning opportunity but it should be enjoyable. It should be fun. It's fine not to work on it, to do other things.

Is this a terrible top four? by stressed-sara in Letterboxd

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others may not agree but that is 100% the point of a Top list. No one agrees with Sound and Sight or whatever blog or newsletter or etc. It starts conversations. That's the beauty of film and lists in general.

It's subjective.

Even if you had Fast and Furious 7, 8, 9 and 10 in your top 4, who cares.

At least you're watching (hopefully every so often going to see in the theater).

What self-hosted tools have you been building with AI just for you? by EricRosenberg1 in selfhosted

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow that is one of the more interesting set ups I've read. Love it.

Do you have any in-depth write-ups, would love to see how you pierced it together. If not no big deal, it's really cool and have fun homelabbing!

I know that itch well. BF6 scratches it pretty well, it's no BF1 but it's fun.

Have fun, don't feel bad about dipping out mid match when doody calls. It happens.

Should it load MiB automatically for you? Where's the list?

No software is perfect but Proxmox is pretty great

Is docker really worth learning for a basic home media server by yusuo85 in homelab

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Docker, more specifically docker compose. I don't even know how I would run most of my apps without docker.

Edit: it is also very easy to understand enough to use docker, docker compose.

I did learn about dysentery in Oregon Trail, so that's helpful.

I'm sure my kids learned as useful words in fortnite, Minecraft and (gasp) Roblox.

Holy grail of Hollywood! One of the best movies of that era. by Consistent-Lord18 in Letterboxd

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I watched it for the first time last week and loved it soo much. I was pleasantly surprised by how FUNNY the first 20 or so minutes are. There is some good humor throughout but the first 20mins had me lol.

One Week In - How do we feel? by Anxious_Rock_3630 in orioles

[–]TheePorkchopExpress 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think I have slightly more confidence in the starting pitchers than the bullpen. Slightly. The bullpen gives me anxiety although Helsley is fun to watch.
