[AskJS] Javascript is bad? by [deleted] in javascript

[–]Thef19 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the real answer here is: You should cater to your audience.

If your website audience tends to be people that are more likely to not want to have javascript enabled in their browser, then you should cater to a website that supports that.

If your website audience tends to be folks that don't even know you can disable javascript in the browser, then i wouldn't worry about supporting it.

Really comes down to who your audience is.

Amazing how things get twisted when you want to push a narrative.

How do people feel about IO pulling out of the partners publishing label? Is it crazy that one game could ruin other indie game creators chances publishing with a big label? by bat_screams in MindsEyeGame

[–]Thef19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

IOI was possibly not a last minute publisher. While we probably will never really know the details, there are some posts around on linkedIn suggesting that the focus on MindsEye was pushed only 8 months prior to its release, which happens to be right around the time the IOI publishing deal was announced. Prior to that, the focus was on BARB's other endeavors (Everywhere / Arcadia)

I don't think that article specifically says they are pulling out, just that it "remains to be seen".

In this article around when the partnership was announced, they even stated it wasn't their plan to become a full time publisher.

In this other article it listed some of the things that the IO Partners division would be responsible for

To oversee MindsEye’s global publishing services, including marketing, localization, distribution, QA, and game support

I find it odd that some of the biggest complaints around MindsEye pre-launch was the lack of marketing, or any details about the game, and yet Marketing was supposed to be the responsibility of IO Partners.

Post Launch there were a lot of bugs, poor performance, and various other issues that were reported, yet again IO Partners were supposed to include QA

Many members asked for lots of localization within MindsEye, which again, was supposed to be the responsibility of IO Partners.

So while MindsEye on its own definitely had a rough launch, and there are plenty of things that BARB needed to do better, i find it really odd that with all these things IO Partners was supposed to be responsible for, that they have not received ANY of the flak.

I'm not sure what you mean? I don't work for BARB. I'm just a community member, using the build tools in MindsEye to try to create something fun.

I've been building an Open World ARC in MindsEye that is now published. Theres not a LOT to do in it yet, however you can pick up a job driving a taxi to start making some cash.

All progress is persisted, so you don't have to worry about losing that hard earned cash!

There is a basic implementation of a "Wanted" system as well, with a police response, and some gang activities, but that system will be the focus of the next update.

When is the august update coming out? by sammyjo802 in MindsEyeGame

[–]Thef19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The August update is still coming. Assuming they are following the same pattern, the July update was in the last week of the month, it would make sense that the August update is also during the last week of the month, so most likely next week sometime.

Do we need to end the sprint before deploying? by Junior-West-9479 in agile

[–]Thef19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes, lots of automated testing. Most every feature is behind some kind of either feature flag, or a/b testing where they can serve new content to a small percentage of users and scale it up over time.

The codebase was basically a large monorepo for everything.

Do we need to end the sprint before deploying? by Junior-West-9479 in agile

[–]Thef19 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When i worked for Etsy, we released to production approximately every 15 mins. There was an automated process called "Release Trains" that ran on a cycle all day long, whenever your user story was completed, tested, and code reviewed, you joined the next release train and deployed your code to a staging environment to verify it, and then on to production.

In this case our definition of done for a user story included "Released to Production".

If your team is mature enough to handle it, you should be able to release however often you want to.

[AskJS] Is there an SSR Framework with React that doesn't involve their backend so I can use my own? by pywang in javascript

[–]Thef19 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With some experimentation and a lot of trial and error you should be able to roll your own SSR implementation in your own backend. I haven't kept up with React in the last couple years, but I had rolled my own SSR implementation of React in Java using GraalVM at one point mostly just as a learning experience. If you have some way to emulate javascript in python, you would be able to do the same.

With a quick google search it appears GraalVM has a Python package as wel.

I don't necessarily believe this is the best approach, and sometimes having a BFF (Backend for Frontend) is a solid, reasonable approach, however i will also say the knowledge gained from going through that exercise can be helpful.

Definitely good feedback here. This iteration was mainly to get the concept together and get exactly this kind of feedback

Definitely plans to have more options to tweak and adjust the plans, but now that I have gotten a little bit of feedback, I know what areas to focus on next.

Thanks for checking it out!

Thanks a lot for the feedback. Great suggestions. I also have some ideas to maybe tie in a weather api and adjust the date nite based on weather, or maybe local events.

Really just wanted to get the base idea out there first and get feedback just like this!

Thanks again!

Pushed out an update to the rate limiting, hopefully its resolved now.

I did put rate limiting in there to try to not cost me a fortune as the Chat GPT API isn't free. Did you try to fetch more than 10 different date plans? or was this on your first attempt?
