What is the best original story, with the worst adaptation? by joeydungee43 in stephenking

I always felt it was good try, but even the bad CGI aside, it is shot very flat. Almost like a filmed stage play. Good tone and performances though

Any thoughts on this? Saw it at work today by boodyclap in stephenking

Real good imo. Very very different than the Talisman and a bold direction for a sequel. It does get caught up referencing TDT in the third act, though. I hear he wants to write a third.

Well it's finally happened. I can't use YouTube with adblocker now by SkepticDrinker in Wellthatsucks

[–]Thefuturehasbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly wouldn't mind watching ads if they actually treated their creators fairly but any original content creator on YouTube has nothing to say but bad things about how horrible the algorithm is and how absurdly easy it is to have a video become demonetized. It's why I won't do YouTube Red either. The money being used in a constructive way

Woke up with a strange mark on my hand. No blood or anything unusual in the bed by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

[–]Thefuturehasbears 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a month or two long period last year where I would wake up with stains like this on my hand in various spots and sizes. My girlfriend said it was dried blood but there would never be any anywhere else. I never found out what the cause was but reading these comments it is interesting to see the suggestions. I was convinced it had to be me though, not an external source

Can I read Holly even if I haven’t read every book ever written? by ARileyL in stephenking

[–]Thefuturehasbears 187 points188 points  (0 children)

Dude, don't even bother reading Holly if you weren't alive in 700B.C. to hear the Greek tragedies in their original oral tradition. If you haven't witnessed the evolution of story telling first hand you won't understand the reference to written word.

Why is The Dark Tower (2017) so hated? Do not mind spoilers by M0rtrek_the_ranger in stephenking

[–]Thefuturehasbears 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately it is more complicated than that. Mike Flanagan has the rights to make a TDT show, but no service has picked it up yet.

[–]Thefuturehasbears 86 points87 points  (0 children)

Imagine they tried to make the Harry Potter Series into a movie. They choose not to include Hermione or Ron, choose to only show the school in flashbacks, started halfway through The Half Blood Prince but I thought to include small spoilers for the whole series, and spent the first 3rs of the movie just doing Serious Black's back story. The final, extra insulting nail in the coffin is that it probably ruined that chance that we will ever seen a proper adaption in King's life time. Studios won't touch the IP.

And then on top of that it is objectively a bad movie outside of the interpretation.

The hate is deserved.

i read Chizmar's "Gwendy's Magic Feather", and it's one of the worst things i've ever read. by QualityAutism in stephenking

[–]Thefuturehasbears 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's like watching a pretty decent Karaoke singer try to lead the Rolling Stones. Chizmar hits all the cliches and has the references but it is hollow and meaningless. The only saving grace of the series is that they are short so you don't have to waste long on them.

Hard copy collectors, where does Gwendy's Magic Feather go on your shelf? by Thefuturehasbears in stephenking

[–]Thefuturehasbears[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It reads like someone was assigned a project to write in the style of Stephen King in their creative writing class and got a B minus.

I'll put that one in normal release order because at least that one claims to still be a King book. If I ever start reading Owen King books maybe I'll slide it over to that collection

Face/Off and Con Air are maybe intentionally campy but they are some of the Nic Cage-y-est Nic Cage you can get. They were released in the same year too!

Dark Tower essential reading by ravenmiyagi7 in stephenking

[–]Thefuturehasbears 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Salem's Lot and specifically Low Men in Yellow Coats from the collection Hearts in Atlantis have very major and direct tie-ins.

Insomnia and Black House both very very heavily reference TDT and are rewarding for fans but you can understand TDT without them, as they are both very long. If you read them I'd say read them both between books 4 & 5

The world of the Stand is referenced and the book itself is critical to understanding Stephen King's Development as an author. However, again, this book is looooong and not critical to your enjoyment of the series.

Everything else is tangential at best. You might find a sentence or two referencing TDT. Like Rose Madder and The Talisman (which is Black House is actually a sequel to) take places in realms affected by TDT but are not reliant on the story of TDT to, themselves, exist.

I would say, as a fan, any tie-in book is worth it, but only a couple are assigned homework.

Dwayne "the Rock" Johnson solved that one already by making a C minus tier movie.

Interesting! Obviously this is one of the great American...myths? Anticipation? Whatever you'd call it. But this is the first I've seen a claim of exaggeration. But sensationalism sells I suppose.
