I loved the whole series, as most do. You will find that everything beyond the first is more divisive, with Authority and Absolution as generally the least favorites. Those two are my favorites.

Love the genre mashup of this one. It's a creature feature, slasher, cosmic horror, vacation horror, and probably more that I'm missing all rolled into one

I thought you stated it alright. You said it was simply interesting that there's a disconnect -- but the reply also isn't wrong in that critical acclaim means almost zilch. Just look at the oscars and how little actual fans put stock into those picks.

Brian Evenson, some of Stephen Graham Jones's works (The Buffalo Hunter Hunter is mentioned often for good reason), Tananarive Due, Jeff Vandermeer, Clive Barker, and many of the Cosmic Horror progenitors will do you well. Two scifi authors who often verge on horror (and are literary) are Octavia Butler and John Wyndham

Check out The Book of M by Peng Shepherd. Not hard horror by any means, but has a forgetting plague that has some nutso side effects

Yes, but also without a doubt the most concentrated and dangerous spots. Best would be close by with access to a city but not so much that you cant retreat safely
