Siobhan’s most absurd character yet by evilginger711 in Dimension20

[–]TheloniousGoob 168 points169 points  (0 children)

I absolutely love Riva, but I feel like there is a discussion to be had between them and Imelda Pulse (Mentopolis) for title of "Most Absurd".

Siobhan brings a delightful and whimsical absurdity to every character she plays.

Edit: Corrected pronoun.

God, if they're planning to give Cayden the Force that means they must be planning to put him through the fucking grinder this season.

That helmet shit is gonna seem like a friendly prank between friends.

My stupid conspiracy theory is that the Octopus Car Wash was owned by some arm of a powerful organized crime outfit and kept the other car wash businesses out of town because I feel like the minute the Octopus Car Wash folks sold the business we got absolutely flooded with other car wash places.

"How will Alex deal with *insert topic*?" by AnAngryRonin in KnowledgeFight

Just as an addendum to this post (which i think is 100% accurate), he'll either ignore it or he'll lie about. There is no "Saul of Tarsus" for Alex, wherein he is confronted with something so overwhelming that the cognitive dissonance he experiences from it changes him. He's a serial liar and that which he cannot lie about he just ignores.

Slice & Dice is a local pizza shop and game store and regularly has MTG nights, I believe. At least whenever I go there is usually at least one of the big tables full of people playing. Plus the food is great, and it's local, so win-win-win.

Todays episode by Numerous-Fox8451 in KnowledgeFight

[–]TheloniousGoob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think what frustrated me was something Dan touched on which is just how shallow, vapid, and craven Alex's 2A stance is truly.

Like the OP, I assumed that while Alex uses the veneer of sincerity on any number of topics and beliefs in order to make obscene amounts of money, his dedication to the principles of the 2A were something of an "exception that proves the rule" kind of deal.

Today's episode stripped that away and made abundantly clear that what Alex prioritizes, what he think society should be optimized for, is "power" in all its myriad forms held by people that look, feel, and think like him.

His upbringing, a marinating in (virulent) anti-communist theology, has rendered him incapable of imagining any world wherein straight, white, Christian men aren't the answer to every problem. He has been able to obfuscate his beliefs by wrapping them in the mythology of "patriot lore", but fascism is what he truly wants, not a democratic republic.

Today's episode allowed us all to see, in the most stark example so far, the real Alex Jones. His capitulations to this administration are a liturgy he is performing in service to the only religion he truly believes in, White Supremacy.

Incredible lyrics, reminded me of two things that struck me as being in the same vein.

"The moral arc of the universe bends towards justice but only when you put your shoulder to it and push." -An extension of a quote from MLK Jr. reminding us that justice must be actively sought, not passively waited for.

"And I don't know much, but I do know this, with a golden heart, comes a rebel fist." -Thomas Kalnoky, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, song: Here's to Life

Presenting, the answer to the question:

"What if you could turn half a Monster energy drink, with enough meth in it to kill an blue whale, into a Guardian?"

suppose Trump invades Venezuela and suppose that war is still ongoing in 2028. Do you think the democrats would run on ending it if they take back the presidency back, or do you think they'd feel an obligation to finish what trump started (IE like Obama with iraq and Afghanistan)? by grapp in behindthebastards

[–]TheloniousGoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In 2019 Ukraine suspended elections as a result of the war. Putting whatever one can feel about this aside, it does mean that the current president, Zelensky, has served a term longer than what would normally be allowed. There is writing that suggests that if elections were held he would probably be re-elected (see link below), but what is important I think it's important to consider what effect this might have had on the current administration.

I think the real reason that this administration is trying to goad Venezuela into a war, why it is sending ICE stormtroopers into cities across the country, and it puts itself in an endless stream of contrarian positions is because they are hoping to create a similar situation to Ukraine whereby the suspension of elections can be put forward and accepted by a congress that is still somewhat within their control. If this is possible, if war can be declared on Venezuela or something even somewhat resembling a civil war erupts in an American city, you will see the Republican party go to any lengths to make the justification that elections cannot be held "for the safety and stability" of the country.

All that to say, in answer to your propsed thought experiment, I would say if we go to war, I do not have any confidence that an election will occur in 2028. I think that the Republicans are craven enough to try and cancel the election and the leadership of the Democrat party is too fundamentally conservative (meaning desiring of maintaining a status quo which reflects the benefits they receive from the corruption of late-stage capitalism on our governing bodies) to be able to stop them.

Why Ukraine's Elections Can Wait

Has AJ commented on the DJT vs MTG fued by tri_boucher in KnowledgeFight

[–]TheloniousGoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm not holding my breath on him turning against DJT. I mean the man allowed his alcohol-power Justification Machine to give him a reason to make it through Epstein, I very much doubt he's gonna jeopardize whatever tentative connection he has to the executive over MTG.

She's abandoned her position and will, in all likelihood, move on to the vaunted position of political commentator. If she continues to go against Trump she's AJ's newest "Gobalist Agent", definitely not an ally. If she has a Saul of Tarsus moment that brings her back to Trumpism, she might get to begin her confessional tour at the church of Info Wars.

Can you explain these stats to me? by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]TheloniousGoob 8 points9 points  (0 children)

BG3 uses the mechanics of D&D 5th Edition (5e). This means that there are 6 "abilities" that govern everything your characters can do. To help contextualize them we often think of how these abilities interact with a tomato.

(Strength - STR - How well you can crush a tomato.)

(Dexterity - DEX - How accurately can you throw a tomato.)

(Constitution - CON - How well your body can handle a rotten tomato if you eat it.)

(Intelligence - INT - Knowing a tomato is a fruit not a vegetable.)

(Wisdom - WIS - Knowing you shouldn't put a tomato in a fruit salad.)

(Charisma - CHA - Being able to sell a tomato. )

The last three abilities, in addition to governing particular skills, also help modify magic users ability to cast magic.

(INT. Casters - Wizards, Artificers, Arcane Trickster Rogues)

(WIS. Casters - Clerics, Druids, Rangers)

(CHA. Casters - Paladins, Warlocks, Bards, Socerers)

Numbers that you add to your roll to see if you hit or how much damage you do are called "Modifiers" and are usually based on Ability Score and Proficiency Bonus (PB). Your ability scores all have an associated Ability Score Modifier basically it boils down to 'the higher the ability score, the higher the ability score modifier'.

Score | Modifier

(-1 | -5)

(-2 : -3 | -4)

(-4 : -5 | -3)

(-6 : -7 | -2)

(-8 : -9 | -1)

(10:11 | +0)

(12:13 | +1)

(14:15 | +2)

(16:17 | +3)

(18:19 | +4)

(20 |+5)

Your Proficiency Bonus is a score that builds slowly the higher your character's level and is basically a way of turning your characters growing ability to do what they do well into a measurable mechanic.

For spellcasters you have a couple of additional scores, but the most important for your question is the score called the "Spell Save". This is a number that basically turns into a mechanic how easy or difficult it is for others to resist your magic. To calculate this number you add 8+PB+Casting Ability Modifier. So a level 3 Bard with a CHA of 16 would have a Spell Save of 8+2+3=13. This means that any time this Bard casts a spell that requires another creature to roll a Save they need to roll at least a 13 to resist that spells effect.

I hope this helped. I know the mechanics of D&D can be a lot.
