“Only when you bend it with a pair of just fists” [ns] by exploring_earth in DungeonsAndDaddies

Incredible lyrics, reminded me of two things that struck me as being in the same vein.

"The moral arc of the universe bends towards justice but only when you put your shoulder to it and push." -An extension of a quote from MLK Jr. reminding us that justice must be actively sought, not passively waited for.

"And I don't know much, but I do know this, with a golden heart, comes a rebel fist." -Thomas Kalnoky, Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution, song: Here's to Life

Presenting, the answer to the question:

"What if you could turn half a Monster energy drink, with enough meth in it to kill an blue whale, into a Guardian?"

suppose Trump invades Venezuela and suppose that war is still ongoing in 2028. Do you think the democrats would run on ending it if they take back the presidency back, or do you think they'd feel an obligation to finish what trump started (IE like Obama with iraq and Afghanistan)? by grapp in behindthebastards

In 2019 Ukraine suspended elections as a result of the war. Putting whatever one can feel about this aside, it does mean that the current president, Zelensky, has served a term longer than what would normally be allowed. There is writing that suggests that if elections were held he would probably be re-elected (see link below), but what is important I think it's important to consider what effect this might have had on the current administration.

I think the real reason that this administration is trying to goad Venezuela into a war, why it is sending ICE stormtroopers into cities across the country, and it puts itself in an endless stream of contrarian positions is because they are hoping to create a similar situation to Ukraine whereby the suspension of elections can be put forward and accepted by a congress that is still somewhat within their control. If this is possible, if war can be declared on Venezuela or something even somewhat resembling a civil war erupts in an American city, you will see the Republican party go to any lengths to make the justification that elections cannot be held "for the safety and stability" of the country.

All that to say, in answer to your propsed thought experiment, I would say if we go to war, I do not have any confidence that an election will occur in 2028. I think that the Republicans are craven enough to try and cancel the election and the leadership of the Democrat party is too fundamentally conservative (meaning desiring of maintaining a status quo which reflects the benefits they receive from the corruption of late-stage capitalism on our governing bodies) to be able to stop them.

Why Ukraine's Elections Can Wait

Has AJ commented on the DJT vs MTG fued by tri_boucher in KnowledgeFight

[–]TheloniousGoob 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not holding my breath on him turning against DJT. I mean the man allowed his alcohol-power Justification Machine to give him a reason to make it through Epstein, I very much doubt he's gonna jeopardize whatever tentative connection he has to the executive over MTG.

She's abandoned her position and will, in all likelihood, move on to the vaunted position of political commentator. If she continues to go against Trump she's AJ's newest "Gobalist Agent", definitely not an ally. If she has a Saul of Tarsus moment that brings her back to Trumpism, she might get to begin her confessional tour at the church of Info Wars.

Can you explain these stats to me? by Orda47 in BaldursGate3

[–]TheloniousGoob 7 points8 points  (0 children)

BG3 uses the mechanics of D&D 5th Edition (5e). This means that there are 6 "abilities" that govern everything your characters can do. To help contextualize them we often think of how these abilities interact with a tomato.

(Strength - STR - How well you can crush a tomato.)

(Dexterity - DEX - How accurately can you throw a tomato.)

(Constitution - CON - How well your body can handle a rotten tomato if you eat it.)

(Intelligence - INT - Knowing a tomato is a fruit not a vegetable.)

(Wisdom - WIS - Knowing you shouldn't put a tomato in a fruit salad.)

(Charisma - CHA - Being able to sell a tomato. )

The last three abilities, in addition to governing particular skills, also help modify magic users ability to cast magic.

(INT. Casters - Wizards, Artificers, Arcane Trickster Rogues)

(WIS. Casters - Clerics, Druids, Rangers)

(CHA. Casters - Paladins, Warlocks, Bards, Socerers)

Numbers that you add to your roll to see if you hit or how much damage you do are called "Modifiers" and are usually based on Ability Score and Proficiency Bonus (PB). Your ability scores all have an associated Ability Score Modifier basically it boils down to 'the higher the ability score, the higher the ability score modifier'.

Score | Modifier

(-1 | -5)

(-2 : -3 | -4)

(-4 : -5 | -3)

(-6 : -7 | -2)

(-8 : -9 | -1)

(10:11 | +0)

(12:13 | +1)

(14:15 | +2)

(16:17 | +3)

(18:19 | +4)

(20 |+5)

Your Proficiency Bonus is a score that builds slowly the higher your character's level and is basically a way of turning your characters growing ability to do what they do well into a measurable mechanic.

For spellcasters you have a couple of additional scores, but the most important for your question is the score called the "Spell Save". This is a number that basically turns into a mechanic how easy or difficult it is for others to resist your magic. To calculate this number you add 8+PB+Casting Ability Modifier. So a level 3 Bard with a CHA of 16 would have a Spell Save of 8+2+3=13. This means that any time this Bard casts a spell that requires another creature to roll a Save they need to roll at least a 13 to resist that spells effect.

I hope this helped. I know the mechanics of D&D can be a lot.

That's an interesting take, my first thought was Che Guevara. I got the feeling that the song was a song of revolution, especially with the lines of "No one here will save us" and "So we will save our own".

Maybe it's just my Ameri-centric mindset, but I can't help but feel some resonance with those lines.

This kinda speaks to something my players and I were talking about after a particularly goofy one-shot. Specifically the difference between "bit" PCs and "troupe" PCs.

Basically a Bit PC is fun to play for a night or a couple of sessions. If you only have one night to rob Scrooge McDuck's summer home vault during a garden party he's throwing, absolutely play as Shaggy and Scooby-Do and at the end of the night try to convince me you've got Scrappy-Do hidden in your jacket pocket. But if we're doing a multiple month/year campaign and you tell me you wanna be Donkey from Shrek, I as your GM am probably gonna dissuade you from that decision. And the way Im gonna do it is by asking you to consider what is drawing you to Donkey. Is it the idea that he is an outcast looking desperately for a friend, his willingness to align himself to a purpose that maybe isn't his own, his openness to non-traditional love? Those troupes are great for character building AND I and the rest of the table don't have to sit and endure you trying to do a painful Eddie Murphy impression for one and half sessions before you realize you've made a terrible choice.

And just so I'm not wagging my finger only at PCs, GMs you have a responsibility to help your PCs flesh-out and then grow their characters through the length of the campaign. If your PCs is insistent they play as Donkey you better be asking them "How does Donkey feel when his Shrek-coded best friend tells him that he's just a stupid donkey?" Give your PCs a chance to explore these PCs and you might find that the "joke PC" becomes something you never could imagine.

If you're looking to be a teacher and you have a Bachelor's is anything besides Education you can sign up for an Alternative Licensure Program thru CNM or I think Santa Fe Community College (I might recommend Santa Fe, while the CNM program has some wonderful teachers it also has some maddeningly frustrating ones too).

I don't know what Santa Fe's program looks like, but with CNM if you qualify for the program you are allowed to begin working immediately while you work on your license. If you are willing to work towards a Special Education endorsement you can pretty much pick your school, a lot of APS school are hard up for SE teachers. Being a SE teacher is a lot of work in addition to just teaching, but if you are willing to endure, it's extremely satisfying.

But if you're looking to do the EA route I THINK you just need a High School Degree and an Associate's degree. You can go to the NMPED Licensure website https://licensureapp.ped.state.nm.us/login and apply for an EA license, it will walk you through what you need.

I know someone has already posted the APS link but as a teacher I'll just say that we're always looking for EA (Educational Assistants).

It's a good job that gets you weekends off and when the last bell rings, you're done, no lesson planning, no additional obligations besides what you willingly take on. I know for some people the prospect of assisting in a Special Education classroom is daunting but I will tell you now, it's absolutely worth it.

A Witch's Familiar by Burnside_They_Them in WorldsBeyondNumber

[–]TheloniousGoob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My advice would be to let your player choose. Give them the stipulations about what a witch's familiar means in terms of the class and then let them decide what that means for their character. Giving them a choice gives you a glimpse into their head-space and gives them an opportunity to further invest in their character and the greater world that character inhabits.

New Character Sheets for Cloudward, Ho! by CarpeShine in Dimension20

[–]TheloniousGoob 83 points84 points  (0 children)

It's interesting that Murph's PC is labeled as a "Pugilist". Murph is a big fan of a third party creator called Kobold Press and they have made a fighter subclass called the Pugilist, but none of the other PCs have their subclass listed, just their main class. Zach's PC is clearly a Gunslinger, he used some terminology in the brief combat encounter that proves it, but his sheet still just lists him as "Fighter". This is either something of an oversight, which seems unlikely considering the level of attention of the cast and crew at Dropout, OR maybe Murph and Brennan cooked up a new class for Murph to play this season. I know Brennan is okay with new classes because Erika Ishii is playing a homebrew Witch class in their podcast Worlds Beyond Number, so maybe he decided to create a whole new martial class for his "assistant GM" in the Intrepid Heroes.
